FedEx Invoice: Brokerage Fee (Canadian Customs) and CBCS Label Creation12940

I received an invoice from FedEx that apparently I will have to pay. Its a Customs Clearance brokerage fee. There are two fees, an Advancement Fee (in my case $10) and also a Clearance Entry Fee ($25.50). These are fees related to the costs of clearing customs. Apparently there is an option when CBCS is preparing the labels to send back to Canada to have the package cleared through Customs by the customer (i.e. me). If CBCS does not indicate this then it defaults to FedEx as the broker and they collect, in my case, an additional $35.50. How would I go about advising CBCS that I would always want to clear my own package through Customs to avoid paying this crazy fee? |

Pretty sure you can get out of this charge - I have in the past! Ask them who asked for this do be done? Then follow up with - there should be no clearance fee since this package is a non-duty paid or duty/free package. Looking forward to having this battle with FedEx when my package arrives!!! A) We have our books - so it's not like they can hold them back B) It's $35 bucks....want to take me to court?? Gonna report me and mess up my credit?? (in my case - it would be impossible to mess up my credit so have at it!!) C) It's a fee for a service neither I nor the sender requested on a package that requires no customs clearance |

I've gotten out of paying this before as well. Today was the first time I got push back from FedEx. I had to send an email to Disputes in FedEx but was warned that the fees are legit. We'll see how it plays out but they're getting tough on this.

@Pvadacchino @KatKomics All very good questions...its either CBCS ships Express or if they ship Ground they need to indicate on the label that the recipient (that's us) will clear Customs ourselves (and not broker FedEx to do it for us). Not indicating on the label means FedEx is the default Customs broker which carries these hefty fees. |

Just received an email from CBCS that my Vintage book have moved to grading. Which means they will probably ship in 2-3 weeks Sent an e-Neil to cust. Service asking to either return my books Fed ex international express if not possible to clearly indicated on label that I would clear customs myself and not Fed ex Hopefully this works |

Is there a price difference between Fedex Ground with the fees and Fedex Express International w/o the fees? |

@DrWatson I've looked for specific rates but can't find them. It does state that Ground is cheaper than Express (which I'd expect). Its perfectly fine for CBCS to use Ground service when returning books but I'd like for them to indicate on the label that the recipient will clear Customs themselves (at least provide the customer the option).

I'm going to fight these charges (as I have all my past invoices from FedEx for my CBCS submissions) but I suspect this time I'll have to pay. This isn't Customs fees (which we should never pay as it's our property being returned), these are different fees. Not sure if this is relevant or not but I never even get an invoice from FedEx when my stuff comes back from CGC. |

I did a quick shipping estimate for you. A graded comic box weighing 17 pounds shipped from Tennessee, USA to Brampton, ON would cost $112 US and get there in 2 days by Fedex Ground. FedEx International Economy would be $488 US and International Priority would get there in one day, but it would be $584 US.

@DrWatson Huge difference in cost....while I'm not surprised there's a difference, I am surprised by how much. It simply isn't feasible for CBCS to ship Express so the only solution is for them to give the option to the Canadian clients to clear Customs themselves. Thanks for looking into that.

@KatKomics From my understanding the usa is trying to go for herd immunity (or herd mentality depending on who you are listening to) that being the case, the vaccine is the only solution. From my understanding, the vaccine will require 2 separate shots and the vaccine will most likely require a type of refrigerator that most places do not have. If all this is correct, we are not going to be welcome anywhere for awhile... Better learn how to make your own tacos..... sorry |
