@MatterEaterLad I'm not disputing what you say, but why do you think it is that the worlds immigrants so often choose the US over Norway? If we're not missing something in the equation, it would seem that there is a huge mistake being made by the worlds most desperate people. Honestly though, I think we're missing something in the equation.

Good question. I'm guessing that most of our immigrants (and definitely most of our illegals) are coming via Mexico, so geography is probably part of it. On the other side of the coin, Norway is up there on the same parallel as Alaska, so geography and weather probably make some immigrants think twice.

Despite the long, dark winters, Norway does have a huge immigrant population. Something like 15%.

It isn't the geography and weather; people stay away from Alaska because of their socialism.

Sounds like comparing Norway to Alaska might be more accurate than comparing it to the entire US.

@EbaySeller I think it would be a poor comparison unless Alaska has a 49.5% income tax rate. One might wonder what the income tax rate would if they had states putting their fingers in that pie like we do. Would Americans live in a state that had a federal 49.5% tax rate and a state income tax on top of it?

My understanding of that is most European countries donā€™t have as ā€œcompleteā€ an immigration process as we do.

This is anecdotal, so take it for what itā€™s worth, but my friend who left here and went to Ireland 15 years ago, doesnā€™t have full citizenship.

Another friend went to Norway, bern married almost twenty years and has a kid born there doesnā€™t have full citizenship.

In the US, immigrants, provided they meet the requirements, are American citizens without any conditions or restrictions.

Now, this is just my opinion, but thatā€™s always been our greatest strength was having people want to be here and feel like they are part of the process.

Everyone knows about Rosie the riveter, but we could just as easily celebrate Jose the riveter.

Mexican immigrants chipped into help out with manufacturing during WW2, as well.

That not even counting all the innovations and traditions that have been thrown into the melting pot.

We do. They are teachers, firemen, law enforcement officers, jailers, guards, and social workers to name a few. We don't pay nor set aside enough in our budgets to train them. Instead our society likes to spend money elsewhere. (Note, I am not writing we are not collecting enough in taxes. I am writing that we underpay those people and we spend money where we shouldn't and it could be redirected).

Seattle Police and Fire make 100k per year after 30 months on the job.(City pay scale) Teachers start at about 60k, Seattle Public Schools.
Suppose everybody is going to move here now.
Of course that isnā€™t as much scratch as it used to be. But a lot of other folks are really badly underpaid that do not get ā€œheroā€ status. The guy who picks my celery, for instance.

According to salary.com the average police officer in Seattle makes 62,609.00 a year. According to the same website the average teacher there makes $64,615.00. Wanna know why the average salary is lower than teachers? The average career in law enforcement is a little over 3 years. Most people find out very quickly that it isn't what you thought it would be, the hours are endless at times, the paperwork and the amount of it is madding, and your days off generally aren't "your" days off. So, most people quit. Turnover in most agencies is horrendous. The past 6 months hasn't helped at all.

Also, I'm not understanding your post. Are you stating that the police in Seattle are paid too much? (They aren't). Are you saying that teachers should be paid more? (I agree). Are you saying something else?

Yes. Salary.com is not accurate. Look at city of Seattle police pay scale. They have fire too.

Nevermind, I found it.

31.24 an hour as a recruit

Yes, what?

That they are over paid? Underpaid?

I did see that according to Forbes the city pays tree trimmers over $150K per year. The Chief Librarian makes almost $200K there. A city electrician makes $271K a year.

$31.24, assuming they're 40 hours a week, is just about $65k a year. Not bad at all; when I was a 'recruit' scientist I spent 7 years making $25k a year. Entrance qualifications were a little tougher, too.

I won't speak ill of police in general, but in specific motorcycle officrs making $150K in overtime need to be taken out behind the woodshed. We had one of those in my hometown, his scheme was to write tickets for extremely marginal infractions and then show up in court to earn overtime when the citizens argued the tickets. Everyone knew his name, everyone had gotten tickets from him. He was like the 2nd or 3rd highest paid official in the city. My 50 year old neighbor got ticketed for making "too wide of a turn" (onto the street she lived on for 25 years). He was paid to be a protector, but he was a wolf mauling the sheep.

Another example of where I made poor life choices. Although I will say, any job that uses 'heavy machinery' (which includes landscaping) has a higher fatality rate than policing. I don't need that.

I looked it up for my area; average salary for police is around $80k. It might be higher; it was hard for me to tell because the table was poorly formatted. There were three levels, maybe chief, officer, and patrol, and the lowest one was $80k. And good on them, but like you said I wish the training and budget priorities were different.

@xkonk There are a bunch of reason why I wouldn't choose to live in that area of the country. I looked up the median cost of a home there and it is $750K+. The cost of living looks crazy compared to my area of the world.

If you want to see what the entire city makes there it can be found at OpentheBooks.com

City of Seattle Payroll

The Mayor there makes more than 48 of the 50 State governors according to the Forbes article I looked at.

If you look at the www.openthebooks.com website and look at maps it has all the human waste reports in San Francisco from 2011-2019. The map is eyeopening. There are over 75,000 reports.
