DC hit by layoffs/departures following Warner’s restructuring12598

COLLECTOR dielinfinite private msg quote post Address this user
Looks like Warner’s Corporate restructuring has hit DC Comics and dC Universe leading to departures of Editor-in-Chief Bob Harras, Editors Brian Cunningham and Mark Doyle, among others

Honestly, I’d almost forgotten about DC Universe since DC seems to have been focusing its programming on HBO Max recently. Apparently they’re still planning to “grow the DC brand,” whatever that translates to, so we’ll have to see how this plays out.

I'm not much of a DC guy but I was planning on checking on their FanDome thing on the 22nd. Curious if they'll say anything about this. I saw a copy of the company memo making the announcement, and given how they buried the layoff news I would guess not.

DC streaming and movies etc have never really been my thing. Big fan of Doom Patrol and the short lived Swamp Thing....have caught some Stargirl (surprisingly good) but I can take a pass on Titans (hard for me to say since I have the whole TT run from BB54 through to the late 80's!!) and no interest in anything animated...don't even get me started on the movies!!!

Right now for DC comics the only thing I'm liking is the Hill House books and the Question

I've been watching "Stargirl" on the CW, and so far so good.
Big fan of "Harley Quinn" first two seasons ended on a great note! One of the best new shows, out right now.
I'm curious about "Doom Patrol" and "Swamp Thing" but have not seen them yet.
I wish WB would resolve the old Fox Batman TV deal, and give us a big budget HBO Max Batman TV show!
Also feel Spider-Man and X-Men would be best served as big budget TV shows, not a fan of hit & mess movies they keep making about them.

everything is going to be fine. If you look at comichron the sales numbers are good with Manga and crowdfunding being counted in and Demon Slayer sold 2 million copies in 3 days recently

so unless something horrible to effect sales happens like artist telling people if they don't like the books then don't buy then or artist outright insulting fans everything should be okay

Just look at the manga sales comics are selling

Actually, they have these two titles coming out in the Black Label line (which by all reports is doing very well) in October, I believe.

Here's more on Rorschach.

I will not touch the Rorshach book or any other title Tom King works on after he tried to ruin the career and life of Jae Lee

NO idea about any upcoming DC releases since they are not in the Diamond giant book, for that fact no idea what Marvel has on offer either...I don't flip through inserts or booklets...anywhere, ever (unless they are instructions).

What was the original beef all about? Did Tom King have a problem with someone not being white male? Or did he just have a problem with someone who happened to not be white male? I never heard the story.

Tom king got upset Jae Lee was doing a variant cover for his Rorshach book so he brought up the fact that Jae lee did the cover on some book called cyberfrog and how the Writer was a member of some kind of hate group. Through king logic that meant Jae was also a member of this hate group that target minorities and marginalized people. Jae Lee is Asian. So king went to DC comics and Twitter and tried to get Jae Lee cancelled. Then Tom king put out a lie stating that him and Jae spoke and everything was good which Jae disproved on his instagram

Aha, I was wondering how race came into it. So Tom King was, as Shakespeare would say, hoisted on his own petard.

Take a knee, confess your privilege, vow your eternal loyalty...and all your sins can be forgiven. It's been the same story in one form or another for a few thousand years.

It's about getting "Likes" and the instant gratification of being "woke" and calling out perceived evils and injustices. It's not about having constructive conversations with people. The cancel-culture crew and have-to-be-angry crowds don't care that their online bullying tactics have real-world consequences. People lose their jobs when they want to pretend they are white knighting.

As for DC, I've seen grumblings that this could be a move toward getting rid of physical monthly comics. I've been hearing that rumor since they broke from Diamond.

Yeaaaaa.... this is the part that REALLY concerns me. It is now starting with DC, and my worries is it eventually flows into Marvel with their Monthly comics too.
I.P. is far more lucrative/profitable than comics.
My worry is comics become primarily digital and I know that sounds huge and can never happen to some; but gosh ... it may be really be a possibility now that DC is taking that 1st step in the industry.

Great article. I love the phrase "The bully is the one punching down."

Although, I do take umbrage with this statement - "The fundamental problem is that many shamers, like Richards, don't fully grasp the power of the medium." I'm sure there are some people that are still naive as to the power of social media, but for many of us that is not the case.

That's very interesting, that has some very widespread consequences with it, if it does come to pass.

Totally agree with this. I don't know if Marvel has any digital-only releases. I know there were a few minis that started with physical monthy issues then went digital after the sales were lackluster. I would imagine that the trade paperback market would still exist. It seems most Marvel storyarcs now are written with a six issue mindset so that the TPB can be released. How often do we get a standalone issue like The Kid Who Collected Spider-Man? The indy publishers might not go digital-only but they do offer it. I can say that I will be done with new comics if it goes digital-only. Yeah, I'll save space but I also don't want to pay $4 for something I can't have a physical copy of.

The big companies would do well to heed what going fully digital did to the music industry, the musicians, and the memorabilia collectors. It's not great.

No kidding. Offhand, going digital would eliminate any/all variants, which would devastate the local LCS as collectors aren’t buying multiples, the cover artists that aren’t getting paid for the covers, so on and so forth.

That’s also not taking into account the amount of readers that simply will not transition from physical to digital, which translates into lost sales. You’ve seen that with printed books and local book stores; they seem to have fared slightly better.

Yeah, I was going to ask if King was one of them that got the boot. That wouldn't upset me at all.

As far as DC going full digital, I will never buy a digital copy so they will definitely lose me as a customer.

I do read digital, but it's sparse; usually when I'm traveling. I have a Comixology acct (owned by Amazon, which is another gripe entirely) that I'll purchase some TPBs through. But, I usually wait until they're running 75% off sales on them. I got the original Old Man Logan TPB through there for $5 a week ago (for example).
