No kidding. Offhand, going digital would eliminate any/all variants, which would devastate the local LCS as collectors aren’t buying multiples, the cover artists that aren’t getting paid for the covers, so on and so forth.

That’s also not taking into account the amount of readers that simply will not transition from physical to digital, which translates into lost sales. You’ve seen that with printed books and local book stores; they seem to have fared slightly better.

Count 1 person here. I'll be pretty much done with anything new. And I do mean that.

Yeah, I was going to ask if King was one of them that got the boot. That wouldn't upset me at all.

As far as DC going full digital, I will never buy a digital copy so they will definitely lose me as a customer.

I do read digital, but it's sparse; usually when I'm traveling. I have a Comixology acct (owned by Amazon, which is another gripe entirely) that I'll purchase some TPBs through. But, I usually wait until they're running 75% off sales on them. I got the original Old Man Logan TPB through there for $5 a week ago (for example).

Marvel has had a few digital-first series but I only know of them because they were later printed.

As far as IP goes, it's more valuable than comics now but it only exists so far because of the comics. For relatively little money and risk they can have a lot of creative people throw stuff at the wall and see what works, then turn it into toys and movies and whatnot. If Marvel or DC puts a "first appearance" in a movie or TV show and that character goes supernova, that would be bad news for comics.

i read today in a bleeding cool article that DC is looking to move a little out of the direct market, this will hurt a lot of comic shops but AT&T is facing a huge debt.

Glad i follow Spawn and self publishers.

Even if image falls i still have other books to read

Maybe now DC will get a competent EIC.

They will go digital and trade in the next two years. Digital will give them some cash but trades is where they will get the bulk of the money. One can make way more money on trades than single issues. The other option that both Marvel and DC could take is licencing out for their comic issues. This way they still get the money but offset the cost to other publishers.

Personally, I would love to see the licencing out option instead of digital and trade only route. While I read via trade and digital only I still collect single issues as well for many titles.

I have no problems with going digital because I do not buy new comics anymore. As long as I can buy physical copies of collected editions in trade/hardcover I will be happy.

If it goes digital then I'm out! Only trades i buy are for older issues where i don't want to handle the copies i have or can't afford the original issues...i would also be out for new material in trade only....guess i should my collection now and call it a day

If we're comparing selling one TPB compared to the six issues of the same story arc, yeah. But that's not the only way that people enjoy/buy comics.

People will buy multiple copies of the same issue, or variant covers or different printings if it's a story arc or character they like (looking at current Venom and Thor). Or, purely out of the desire to find that key issue and flip it. Some collectors will also buy the TPB, to keep the issues pristine.

A good analogy is the music biz. A string company makes a LOT more by selling one set of bass strings vs one set of guitar strings. However, given that guitarists usually change their strings on a ratio of 6:1 over bassists, the real profit lies in guitar strings.

I hate reading digital copies. I gave it a fair chance; just don’t like it.
I prefer digital video games and movies to save on space. For games The “physical” copies are digital information etched in plastic and need to be installed anyway.

I can appreciate the Mona Lisa, but it is an entirely different experience as a digital image.

Why not just put out new graphic novel material or prestige format limited series and do away with the single issue continuity crud that seems to have to be cleaned up anyway every 5-10 years. I would rather buy quality new material by a good creative team that isn't rushed by a monthly deadline.

Glad to read that they still plan on putting out books.

I need help with the article though. In one part of it the author states that they fired the editors who were "the fiercest defenders of the traditional comics business within DC’s Burbank offices". In another area the author writes that they got rid of Mark Doyle who was over the Black Label imprint where controversial stories and big risk happened.

So, does that mean that DC comics will be on the original Image schedule, i.e., late and will DC be as boring as some of the stuff they put out before Miller, and Moore revitalized the industry? If so, that doesn't sound like it going to be very good.

Good analogy. It feels like digital is more for "consuming", not really for appreciating or enjoying. Like putting a nice steak in a blender and then chugging it.

These perennial hand-wringing posts about publishers going all-digital are not very realistic, IMO. It simply is not going to happen. Deals might be stuck on back issues and online / digital versions of catalogues - I believe Marvel already has a version of this - but publishers will never go all-digital.

What many people don't know is, ever since digital publishing in books has become a thing, physical books sales have actually gone up, not down. The industry sells more books now than ever before. Books are never going away.

Comic books are similar. It would be absurd and financially ruinous to get rid of the main product for the primary content distribution channel: the thousands of comic book stores around the world. I do agree that it is absolutely a concern that the superhero movies and TV shows are, in terms of revenue, the tail that wags the dog of comic book publishing. But they are never going to kill the dog for the sake of that big-ass tail.

On a side note, I was cajoled to finally try Comixology by a friend of mine. They have this thing called "guided view," which sounds goofy but is actually pretty damn slick. What it does is, it zooms in on a panel or part of a splash page, and then advances to the next area of the page every time you hit the right arrow on the keyboard. So you can read and advance the comic in a very smooth manner, kind of like watching a movie storyboard (which is basically what comics are anyway). I thought it would be awkward and annoying, but instead it was kind of awesome.

I've only bought the one comic, and I probably won't get a library on Comixology anytime soon, but it wasn't bad at all, format-wise. Quite enjoyable, actually.

Are there any digital libraries that allow you to download the content? If not, then you never actually own a digital comic. That is problematic IMO.

My internet went out for 5 days a couple years ago. CDs, DVDs, etc all kept things relatively normal. Hel, I just bought 300 and Watchmen (Director's Cut), because I don't subscribe to any services and don't know if they're readily stream-able anywhere.

I plan on buying a lot more Blu-rays, soon, too. Nolan stuff, Se7en, etc. Love physical copies.

By "digital libraries" I meant "digital goods/services that you pay for". If you buy a digital TPB, and you can't download it, then it can go away at any time and your resources were somewhat wasted.

I still buy CDs, DVDs, and books. Part of it stems from George Lucas' insanity with constantly making edits to Star Wars. I struggled to remember what wasn't bastardized in the original versions. With the recent PC push in society, I've seen more shows/films are being criticized or withheld from circulation due to "questionable content". See: The Office episode "Dwight Christmas", Gone With the Wind (since brought back), Boondocks episode "The Ballad of Jimmy Rebel". I will never go digital only.

Can't ever replicate that magic over digital
