I'm interested to know if the addition of archival tape will hurt a comic's grade or result in a restored/conserved label from CBCS. @DarrylH ? I know that old tape does not count as restoration... but was not sure about recent taping. I hate the appearance of a badly split/frayed cover spine and would like to tape it from the inside. How do other collectors feel about that sort of modification? If it helps the appearance, does that hurt of aid the value for you? |

I believe tape and glue get a designation as “conserved” regardless of how old. Tape and glue are frowned upon. Someone correct me if I’m wrong. |

I'm not a fan of tape. Although I do have one book that has it. I hate the notation on the label, but I'm too poor to get another copy. Edit I got universal label but my tape is interior. ![]() |

https://www.cbcscomics.com/comics-grading-scale "once again, CBCS does not recommend placing tape on a comic" Personally, I don't like to see anything extra on my comics. |

Only archival tape gets conserved. Regular tape gets restored, I believe.

Tape (at least old tape) does not get a restored or conserved, but it is noted on the label. Here's the "best" copy I could afford of an X-Men #1 with several pieces of tape.![]() |

. I appreciate having the label describe the severity of tape, but “piece of” doesn’t really describe the amount. A “piece” could be 1 inch, 2 inches or it could be 10 inches of tape. |

I wouldn't do anything to it. No tape for my vote.

Generally speaking, adding tape makes a book less desirable. I have bought books with tape but that's because I got a good deal.![]() Ask yourself why are you adding the tape. Are you sealing tears? Attaching a cover? Are you planning on selling the book at some point? If yes, I'd say do not add tape. I wouldn't add tape to seal tears either. I'd only consider tape to attach a cover and even then I'm not 100% sure on that. |

Actually, it appears that CBCS does not count tape as restoration or conservation. According to the CBCS grading guidelines, a small amount of tape shows up in the Fine range and it continues to excessive amount in the lower grades. At least that is how I read the guidelines. It should be noted, that CBCS does NOT recommend the use of tape. |

Given the situation, i would have small amount of tape rather than a detached cover. I just need to crack my S’boy 10 and put the theory into practice.

I actually prefer restoration to tape which is odd because I’ve bought books with tape but never intentionally bought restored books and only recently started considering them.

If the book is already in terrible shape and a large piece has either fallen off or is very much about to fall off, tape is worth doing. By definition, it is very much conservation. You are not looking to improve the grade of the comic but making an attempt to keep the comic from degrading further. |

Tape should only be used on books that are literally falling apart, and you don't want to get graded (and are not expensive). I had some very old sci-fi books that were literally disintegrating and used tape for those reader copies. The only other place I use tape is to attach reproduction covers to books, and in those cases I will only use archival safe 'tape' (is closer to tear seal paper and not a plastic/glue based scotchtape). This will still be noted just as tape on the label though, but is 100% reversible and won't be discolouring the paper over time like regular tape (and once again, I use very little. Most covers I use two small pieces of tape cut into halves - which means it's labeled as 'four' pieces of tape even though very small. I wish they indicated how long each piece of tape is, as there is a clear difference between a 3 inch long piece of scotch tape inside a book and a small 1/4" piece of archival tape) |

The way I see it, for some books that I would like to own one day my affordable options would be Restoration, Tape, or Ugly. Since I'm never going to do anything other than look at the covers or display them somewhere, my preferences would go in that order...Restoration 1, Tape 2, Ugly 3, Don't own at all 4.
