I got a feeling I will never win this contest if @mediaslave and @Siggy are doing entries. Wow.

I tried to take a rip at it and put a little bit of a Different Twist on it but I just don't have the time. Busy trying to get a couple of websites out so I only had a 20-minute timer on this one. No contest either for me, it's still just for fun |

It's funny, because growing up in the 90s with that generation of comic artist (Lee, Liefeld, McFarlane, Larsen, etc.), I got really frustrated that my drawings always took on a more cartoonish aspect (although Larsen had a cartoony slant to his). It wasn't until I started seeing all different types of artists doing comics that I felt more comfortable with my skills. Hardest thing now is learning to use Procreate on the iPad. I need to grab one of the screen protectors that helps mimic real paper; my pencil is ice skating on the top at present. |

So, here is a 3 step process on how not to draw the Joker. BTW, drawing is hard. Sketch (I started inking it before deciding to make it a 3 step process and taking the picture.) Bad Inking Adding color I copied the inking and colored over it. I didn't want to mess up my bad Joker drawing coloring it in case I had to start over. To the three guys that can draw, I have to ask how many hours of practice that takes? What can I do to improve what I'm doing? General thoughts on the Joker drawing - I think I add too many lines at times to what I draw trying to add texture and shape. The lines on his forehead and side of his head are too much. Also, in adding the grey around Joker's eye it fubar'ed the finished product. |

Quite a bit recently I've been spending my breaks with a stack of paper and a hard lead pencil, and I just fill the pages with figures, over and over to the point where it actually seems to look worse. As with the guitar, my brain seems to keep working on the details when I'm not, and most often the next time I try (The next day or later), it's a little better. Line work is hard to control when using the same pen. Try a combination of fine and bold points. Use the fine point to start and the thicker pens to add to the "under" areas, like the jaw, chin, brow, and anywhere on the body at the opposite side of the "light source". If the light is from below, the heavier line weight would then shift. For the fine shading like his eyes, use scratch paper until you get the feel of it. And any pen that bleeds into the paper should be avoided. Color pencils is a great alternative, but IMO looks better with fine lines. Whether any of this works for anyone else, I don't know, but it works enough for me to have fun with it. |

Okay. Now with a little effort. I haven't picked up a pencil to draw in a while. |

Quote:Originally Posted by Towmater I've been drawing/doodling since I was a kid, and my mom always made sure I had really nice sketch pads and other supplies to use (even though I was content with a ream of copy paper). I still draw all over my notes in marketing meetings, so it's hard to say exactly HOW much time to put into it. One thing that I learned in college that's helped a lot is timed sketches. We had to do still life studies in 15sec intervals, which is extreme, but the lesson was there. Pick a subject, look at it for a couple of minutes, and then draw it in the same amount of time. It makes your brain focus on the important elements that make up the character, and not overthink it. As an example, here's a 1min sketch of Wolverine. The main parts are there; it's clear who it is, even though it's fairly rough and gestural. But you'll see with the finished pic below (I found a gnarly pen to use) that the inking reinforces what was already there. I could've gone more in depth with detail, but for me, if the extra detail doesn't add to the graphic in a positive way, I leave it out. |

I haven't used my Wacom tablet in many months, and while this morning it just wasn't feeling right, I picked it back up an hour or so later and it suddenly did. I'll continue later tonight (probably). I'll deal with those claws later too lol |

@seanw please don't sit out, have you not noticed my sketches....worst case scenario is your art goes downhill the more you practice . Also it's not a contest, even if you miss the week you can always go back and submit a sketch. We'll just keep track of who submits so we can start a random generator to see who picks the next weeks theme.

@Towmater looks like you're next to pick a theme or character. I suppose it can start today and you can create a new thread, but anyone can still submit wolverine sketches to this thread. I created a list based on those that either submitted or appeared interested in participating at some point. Let me know if I missed anyone: |
