WEEKLY DRAWING SUBMISSION #1 Wolverine!12518

I'd like to say I still turned out alright, but that would be a lie. flanders private msg quote post Address this user
I haven't drawn anything in years and I never had any artistic ability, but drawing has always been fun for me. I started drawing again tonight and I'm hoping to hone my skills for once. I think it would be fun to have a weekly drawing contest where anyone interested tries to recreate the same cover. The winner can select a new cover to recreate each week. Maybe some of us will even surprise ourselves at how far we've come looking back over the weeks. Here's my attempt at Wolverine #1 (just the head for now)

Update: Please submit your best drawing of Wolverine. It doesn't have to be based on original art and can be your own unique creation. Submissions start this Saturday and will run through Friday. We'll figure out the rules as we go, but since there seems to be a wide variation in artistic abilities we can select who picks the subsequent themes on a rotating basis so everyone who participates will eventually get a chance.

I love this idea. I used to draw, years ago, and am rusty as hell. But I used to be pretty good, and it would be a lot of fun, I think. Let's do it!

@flanders My only recommendation would be that instead of recreating covers you select a character or theme. That way people can practice their own style at their own pace and not trying to imitate pieces of varying styles and complexity

Pictures? We don't need no stinking pictures. brysb private msg quote post Address this user
I don't think you would have to imitate the art style of the cover artist...put your own spin/style on it.

I'll play along when I have the time, but does it need to be a contest?

I dont want to be in a contest, but ill post this Duck I drew during some training I had to sit through once. I'm no artist by any stretch, but when I get bored I doodle. I never know what I'll draw, everything starts off as a scribble then evolves from there
Be gentle, like I said I can't draw.

Great ideas everyone. Let's skip a contest and do a weekly submission of a specific theme or character. This week's character is Wolverine. I also like the idea of not trying to necessarily recreate a specific cover but if your art is inspired by a cover please post it along with it. Any other suggestions?

@flanders this was a GREAT idea!! I hope to contribute a drawing now and again. Maybe this will encourage me to draw more.

I'm fine with or without the contest aspect. When does it run from? Saturday to Friday? When is voting, etc.? I like the idea of dealer's choice - last week's winner decides: recreate a cover, or just do a theme, person, etc. Or, maybe it could be, do your own version of this cover, as if you were given the assignment?

Anyway, I'll see what I can do with ol' Wolfie...

@Tedsaid Saturday to Friday sounds good. We'll work out the kinks as we go along. I put an update to the original post, not the drawing unfortunately, that's the best I can do this week.

I still draw stick figures - I always believe in trying; but in this case ... well... y'know

@Joosh @monjoody that's some great art, thanks for participating. I'm working on drawing fruit right now, page 3 of how to draw. Hopefully in a few months I can draw a less drunk hobo looking Wolverine.

I doubt I'll be able to do much with this busy work week, but here's a quick faceless sketch I did on my last break. I know the costume is lacking, but I was afraid I'd make it more Ace Frehly than Wolverine.

Please don't laugh at the different angles I started with. I am not much of an artist. The Joe Mad comment was made as a joke. Some how I made Wolverine's mouth drop like he has bell's palsy. Also, the smaller ear is flatter than the other one.

@Towmater I do like the inadvertent Shadowhawk on the right side there.

Could probably use some ink, maybe some color, and definitely a different penciler.

One drawing per person each week?

Shadowhawk is one of my favorite characters. Thanks!

I started sketching some other characters. I've found out that unlike Liefeld I can draw feet in the comic book way. However, I cannot draw hands.

Maybe we can submit as many as we'd like but it should be kept to the same theme or character. There aren't official rules yet.

Looking at your drawing it looks like you draw a lot. All of Wolverine's anatomy is proportionate. I think if you had the time to ink that it would be more amazing than it is and that you'd win the 1st contest hands down.

I like to draw here and there. I don't do it nearly enough though, so I'm up for a fun little thing here and there.

This is one of the last sketch covers I did. Started out half-assed, went downhill from there.

I tried to take a rip at it and put a little bit of a Different Twist on it but I just don't have the time. Busy trying to get a couple of websites out so I only had a 20-minute timer on this one. No contest either for me, it's still just for fun

And @monjoody! That one's fantastic. I never had any talent for caricature, and so I always admire skill in that area. Like comedy, it is always harder than it appears.

Cool. I bring it up because this has actually got the creative juices flowing again (or at least dripping), and if it does the same for anyone else, there's a good chance I'll do another sketch I'm happier with.
