Fear of sending my books to CBCS12485

Collector Qillabee private msg quote post Address this user
I want to send my books to CBCS to get signatures verified and slabbed using the 2-day. After researching and reading about CBCS, why am I afraid to submit my order? I'm afraid to pay $22 extra dollars per book just to get my books back a month later anyway. Someone help me here. Share some experiences with me.

Not really sure what to offer you on that, @Qillabee. All I can say is that, from what I've read, U.S. turnaround times seem to have improved lately, although I have not submitted books in a few months so I could be wrong.

Unless you need the books very quickly, I'd probably save the extra cost and submit without the 2-day option. I don't know what your needs are, so, obviously, your mileage may vary.

And welcome to the forum!

I haven't had any big issues with CBCS, and the small ones have been fixed quickly and professionally by customer service. If you read around the forum you'll see some people have worse experiences, but my advice is to be patient and polite and it gets you a long way. Most of the time everything works just like it's supposed to anyway and you get your nicely slabbed books just when you expect them.

In terms of the extra $22, that's because of the value of your books, I'm guessing? Look at it this way: your other option is to send it to CGC, who can't verify your signatures and also has price tiers anyway. You also won't have to worry about Newton rings or slab creep or whatever else CGC is doing to people's books today. And the 2-day is extremely quick, although your signature verification will add some time to it.

Right now, if you don't want pressing or vsp, regular tats are 6 weeks. The upper tiers are on time. Just know that 2 day grading does not include the day it is received or the day it is shipped. So, in reality, a two day submission would go like this - it is received on one day, the next two business days are when it will be graded and encapsulated, then they have another day to ship it. That is the MAX that it should be now. Anything quicker than that is a bonus. Hope that helps.

I know a couple forum members have used the 2 day recently. Hopefully they will see this thread and share their experiences.

The extra $22 is for 2-day modern. Regular =18, 2-day modern is 40.

Let me add, this isn't a slam another company post. This is only about CBCS and the time and money aspect of choosing a different way within CBCS. I've used both services and I'm a collector, so those things don't bother me the way they do some.

@Qillabee - Welcome to the forums! If your books qualify for the $18 level of grading, you could always use the fast pass service (an extra $9 or $10 per book), which would cut the TAT in half, so about 3 weeks (without signatures). Verified signatures may add 1 to 2 weeks to normal turn around times. Believe it or not, 8 weeks or less with signatures is not bad. Just keep away from pressing at the current time.

So...how does that apply to 2-day modern?

@Qillabee - The cost of grading a book depends on several things. First, what year was the comic published - Moderns are 1975 to present, while Expanded is pre-1975. Next is how much is the book worth when you send it in - basically what would it cost to replace it for insurance purposes? Moderns at $18 (non-members) are capped at $250 in value, so if you feel your book is worth let's say $400, you cannot use the Modern tier, you have to use the Consumer tier (any year up to $400 value). But let's say your book is worth $1,000, then you would use the 2-Day Modern tier (up to $2,000 value). These tiers are automatically selected when you fill in your on-line Invoice, but you are able to select a more expensive tier if you want to. Next, there is a Fast Pass option at $10 non-members, that will speed up your order and cut turn around times in half (not available on Quickstream, Rapid, or 1-Day tiers, and a waste of money on a 2-Day Modern). Any add-ons like signature verification or imaging will add some extra time to the process. Lastly, you get to choose a shipping method and price - you want it faster, you can pay more here too.
Hope that helps.

@Qillabee I guess I'm confused by your question then. Is your fear just about using modern vs 2-Day?

If that's right, then one thing to keep in mind is that if your book is worth over $200 then you don't have the option to use modern (with some leeway; if they're worth around $200 but you put down less for insurance CBCS might not upcharge you).

In terms of experience with 2-Day, I have used it before since it comes with the bronze membership. The books do turn around very quickly. If you weren't also getting signature verification I think you could expect them the next week even with shipping time. So if you're looking to flip something or just don't want your books out of hand it could be worth it.

On the other hand, as you say, TATs are low right now so you could save $22 per book and just wait an extra 5-6ish weeks. As @esaravo mentioned, you could pay for fast pass ($10) and get them in 3ish weeks instead. That would kind of split the difference with the 2-Day price. If you're feeling a little antsy but want to save some money maybe that would be a good option.

Going back to my experience, I'm a relatively patient guy. I don't use 2-Day unless I have a coupon or have to because of the value of the book. But I also am willing to wait through CBCS pressing times so maybe I'm a glutton for punishment.

@Qillabee Choose the least expensive option be patient and use the savings to buy more comics.

I would have given myself this advice when I sent in my first submission 2 years ago. I was eager to get my books back ASAP so I chose a combination of 2-Day Modern and Quickstream grading. My cost for 11 books was $584 - an average of $53 per book. After the excitement of getting them back quickly was gone I thought about the books I could have bought with the savings had I been patient and chosen the regular service.

To be honest I fear sending books out to any pressing or grading service. I still do it, and have books at CBCS, CGC, and CFP (pressing) right now. It’s the transit that concerns me primarily. If I ever get a high end book graded I’ll probably drive it to TX myself and get a hotel, lol.

This is my concern as well...the books in transit. This is why a wrap, box, wrap and box again. I'll pay the extra shipping charge and proper insurance purely for peace of mind....it'll never be 100% peace of mind until I've got my books back.

Packing and shipping for sure, but if you add in the anxiety of Signature Verification, an 8 week TAT doesn't even make the list of things that I fear in this process. There's enough things to pay for and worry about in the process, with Signature Verification my recommendation would be to not add the extra cost of 2-day unless you have a very compelling reason to do it...particularly if it gives you added anxiety.

Hey, a few questions I have for more experienced collectors.
I'm about to send a book out for one of CGC's In-House P. Signing's, but the question could also apply for CBCS.
This is the first time I've tried this, and I'm also fearful.
Have you guys had success sending in key high grade (9.6 or 9.8) books to get signed, without damage/lowering grades?
Also on the shipping/insurance value, should I add on the extra value the signature will add, just in case something goes wrong?

@Batworldfan

I submitted a 9.6 and requested a press with a todd mcfarlane signature. I received a 9.8.

The added insurance might not be a bad idea if something drastic happens. Added insurance would be minimal and it would cover full replacement costs...

I've always had my books come back as the same grade they were before - no damage/lowering grades.

Keep in mind though that grading is subjective and a few people will be handling your book once cracked - so a drop is always a possibility.

@Batworldfan Personally I wouldn’t submit unless you’ve made peace with the potential of a grade reduction. I’m sure everyone in the chain does their best and I’m not suggesting your book’s going to drop to an 8.0 or anything but there can still be serval people handling your books and spine ticks and fingerprints are easy to accumulate and it only takes a few to knock a book off of a 9.8 or 9.6.

Adding pressing can definitely mitigate some issues but that’s no guarantee.

All that said, some risks might be worth taking

@GAC lol, it’s the same book. I meant to use them to illustrate that sometimes it’s worth taking the risk of cracking a high-grade book for a signature (in this case Alex Ross). Granted, it is a square bound book so it’s a bit more resistant to damage than a lot of books but still

@GAC Thanks! It seems everyone has some mind-blowing books in their collections!

This isn’t Ross but it was my first sketch cover

I worked with the artist to further develop Harley Quinn’s flapper look from the Brave and the Bold cartoon into something a little more recognizable.

I had toyed with the idea of getting commissions of Harley Quinn redesigned for different decades. The comics already imagined a version for the 1966 TV show
