Cautionary notice about CGC character labels.12481

Moderator Jesse_O private msg quote post Address this user
Edit: apparently these are mistakes. There is supposed to be info on the CGC boards. However, they do not know if there are more out there, so be sure to read the labels if it's a character label.

CGC response on their board.

Someone brought this to my attention and I wanted to make sure everybody here knows about it.

Apparently, comics with restoration can get BLUE character labels. And guess what, it doesn't say "restored" it tells what was done to it. Here are the two examples given to me. These may have been mistakes, but from the research I have done, the character labels are not available in purple. So be careful out there!!!

ASM 3 sold listing.

ASM 7 sold listing.

Wow! Now I don't even want to contribute to CGC by buying their slabs from third party sellers. I wonder what @mediaslave has to say about this.

Wow!! I don't like that!! Why would they not label the book Restored?

I'm going to take a wild guess and say Bleeding Cool never reported this.

Thanks for the heads up @Jesse_O!

Aside from the color, they say universal grade, not restored grade. 😮

It's one of my pet peeves so I'll note that the only difference between this and CBCS is that CBCS will have the word 'restored' on there. I wish they would have a restored color but apparently they're moving in the other direction.

@xkonk CBCS also lists restored in two places, above the grade & in the middle of the label stating "restoration includes: with a lengthy sentence with restoration details in bold". To state CBCS "only" notes restored as if the difference between the two is insignificant is not something I agree with.

FYI on the CGC boards they have confirmed this was a mistake and that they should not have been given blue labels, but there is also no way to know just how many slipped through.

That's a massive difference though don't you think? I get wanting a different label colour but completely omitting the word Restored on a restored book is inexcusable imo.

I hope CGC notifies the sellers and buyers of these and other slabs that were improperly labeled so that they can remedy the situation. Both comics above sold for non-restored prices.

I think a different color would be massive. The extra wordage is somewhat of a difference that can be easy to miss. I've had one CBCS restored book and when it's in the box or on a wall it looks just like all my other ones. For something as big a deal as restoration the label should be shouting at me.

I guess it's about how one feels about Restoration. I'm not really a fan of restoration on silverage or newer books but I don't mind it at all on goldenage books. So for me, I don't want the labels shouting at me but I do understand why some would want that.

Not officially, but this post mentions it:
https://www.cgccomics.com/boards/topic/472734-restored-cgc-books-in-new-character-blue-labels/?do=findComment&comment=11305668

The scumbag that sold the comics confirmed that CGC emailed him, but nothing beyond that as far as I know.

Edit - sorry, I meant that they haven't come out and officially said anything about this particular sale of the restored comics with blue labels. However they have come out and officially said that the character labels should not be given to books with restoration: https://www.cgccomics.com/boards/topic/454291-new-marvel-labels-no-purple-for-restored-books/?do=findComment&comment=10929389

This was an early thread when the problem was first discovered. The Dylan Universe thread began yesterday when another member spotted the recent eBay sales.

In my opinion. Time is irrelevant. If they knew and didnt disclose it just to earn a quick buck, they suck.

The original thread about it on CGC was started July 12 of 2019. Brittany from CGC acknowledges the error in November of 2019. As @DrWatson points out, the examples above are new errors, just recently graded. This problem still exists???

Also, the ASM 3 is registered with an APPARENT grade, but has a blue label. The ASM 7 has restoration with a Universal label. What % of this process did they get right, 0%? I wish I could do a bad job and get paid.

Yeah this isn't a one-time problem that CGC fixed, it seems to be an ongoing issue. This seller either didn't care or purposely obscured the fact that they were restored for his sales. He sucks, but the fact that CGC can't (or won't) address the problem that allows these labels to be printed in the first place is the bigger problem.

Chill out... they just gave you yellow.
IMHO I like CBCS restored labels; it clearly states Restored in bold right above the grade. With free graders notes I see no validity in reason for missing the resto.
