CBCS Signature VSP

Jack Kirby, VSP, and BAS - ADVICE WANTED12444

Collector eee91 private msg quote post Address this user
Here's my (admittedly somewhat whiney) situation-

I've previously sent Jack Kirby signed books into CBCS's VSP program back when it was through CSA and now through BAS. They were sigs of a similar style - Kirby's 80's long flowing signature - and they passed.

I recently sent in two more of my Kirby signed books. I'm not an expert, but I've seen plenty of Kirby signatures and know how they evolved over his life - and I can recognize Roz Kirby proxies. These looked good. I'm 90% sure one is an authentic late 70's-style sig - 100% sure on the other late 80's-style sig.

Beckett rejected both.

Maybe BAS saw something out-of-the-ordinary that I missed? But just because I'm certain they're wrong, I sent the sigs to professional authenticator, David Roman, who is an expert on Jack Kirby sigs.

They both passed.

I emailed BAS to ask for an explanation, but no answer. Frankly, I understand why they don't respond - they must get a constant flood of angry emails saying "but mah sig is REEEEEEEEAL".

SO YOU MAKE THE CALL. If you were me, what would you do? Would you-

A. Try again. Re-submit the books back for VSP and pay the $25/book to have BAS look again. Hope this time I get someone better at BAS looking at them. The risk: what if BAS doesn't have enough Kirby exemplars and are comparing my sigs to Kirby exemplars from the wrong era? Then I'm just wasting my money and time.

B. Keep the books raw. But I'm a big fan of CBCS' VSP program and I would love to have both books safely in slabs, so I'd rather not just throw these books in mylars and longboxes.

C. Submit the book to CBCS and not VSP them. They'll get blue labels. Keep them with a COA from the authenticator. Every time I look at the book I'll be bitter about it.

D. Submit the books to CGC instead, out of petty spite towards BAS and CBCS.

E. Keep emailing and complaining until BAS answers me. I don't know if I have the energy to keep bothering them until they assure me whether they can properly identify how Kirby signed in the different eras of his life. Just from my conversations with the CBCS folks at conventions, I trust them on Jack Kirby stuff - not sure I trust the BAS folks.

In all seriousness, I'm not sure what to do next. So I'm asking you fine folks. If you were me, what would you do? A, B, C, D, E, or something else?

Appreciate your opinions. Thanks gang!

E. Should not be on the table. They are not going to justify themselves in a way that makes you happy. They probably will give you a two word answer. Too bad.

I would have them encapsulated just for the preservation and maybe try back in a year or so. Maybe something will change in technology or they have more samples to draw off of.....

I have a few books Kirby signed in my presence. All confirmed via CBCS VSP. Here is another example.

I don't see the point in E. I also don't see the difference between D and C unless you think the green label and spite you get with D is worth the bitterness from C.

So that really just leaves you A and B. I think people on the forum have reported getting passes after fails before, so it's possible you'll get a different result if you resubmit. Up to you if it's worth the money. Personally, I would go with B. If you change your mind and really want to try for verification again you can always do it at any time.
