I thought @Enelson was hothead_comics?

Edit, Later:
Okay, nevermind ... the first pic messed me up because it said "hothead_comics" was a seller, and I thought it meant, they were THE seller in THIS transaction.

I have it figured out now though

Couple lessons I see here: 1) have a very good reason for offering a return policy, and charge shipping separately if you do, 2) In a dispute situation try to get the other side to spill their guts in written communication. Years ago someone taught me that documentation is everything in disputes...the side with the best documentation usually gets the resolution in their favor.

I have never advertised a return policy, in 20 years and I have never encountered such a strange return reason. I dont know if I should have advertised offering returns or not. I just dont think I should have to refund a guy that I think was up to something. I almost always will work with people under normal circumstances. Damages happen, losses happen. This was a different thing, and it worked out in my favor this time in the end...at least for now.

I am of the same opinion when a buyer for a CGC 9.8 book wanted to give it back because for him the comic was not a 9.8. I didn't accept the return and ebay forced it on me and had me pay fees for refusing the return. bummer

ENelson - You will have an easy time arguing a chargeback. You have your communications, delivery is not the issue since he acknowledged receipt. Great job on keeping a good record of the transaction. I have had a buyer refuse to give me a positive feedback because the 2001: A Space Odyssey 8 graded 9.6 should have been an 8.0 in his eyes! So SpiderTim I feel your pain brother!

A lot of people won't risk a purchase from someone with no return policy. For me, as a buyer, it depends on a lot of things, but that is one area I note. Also what type of product, the seller's experience, his feedback, shipping method and practices, etc. You'd like to have a good chance of everything working out ok, and also an avenue for the few times it doesn't.

As a seller, I have 30 day Free Returns set up on my listings. Hasn't been a problem. It saves me 10% on my eBay FV fees every month, that and 1 day handling (used to be 20%!). I could have 10 returns a month and still be in the black due to the 10% savings. Out of 50k transactions over the years, I have had probably 5 returns. That has saved me about $20k in fees during that time. And I didn't alienate any buyers by having them bypass me for having no return policy. Don't want to jinx it, but why would you go the opposite route? If you are getting a lot of returns, maybe you are doing something wrong, or just very unlucky.

I've had 2 returns (one was a ring I sold for my wife) in 20 years and 1 negative feedback, I think it worked out till that last time. Also, I just don't sell that much...like a handful of things at a time

@chester15 Do you have a link to where it explains the discount? I have never heard of that before and I can't seem to find it.

Ouch! The buyer sounds like they need a visual guide to know what qualifies and an 8.0! Either that, or they have buyer's remorse for whatever reason they have. But yeah... I have purchased comics advertised as NM+ but turn out to be NM. So hearing how a professionally graded NM+ should be a VF is something new to me.

@MutantMania You can check it out here in the eBay Help Pages: clickable text

A third of the way down the page it says:

Top Rated Plus benefits and requirements

As a Top Rated Seller, you can qualify for these exclusive Top Rated Plus benefits if you offer same or 1-business-day handling time and 30-day or longer free returns:

The Top Rated Plus seal will be displayed prominently in search results and in the listing description.

A 10% discount will be applied to final value fees (this applies to the final item price only, not to shipping costs, or to any additional final value fees applied to sales in categories where you’re rated as “very high” in your service metrics for “item not as described” returns).

Dang. I could never do the 1 day handling. It would feel like a job. Always allow returns myself, for any or no reason.
