I don’t collect new books, but I see some are really taking off in price. Is the 3rd Printing in this book really limited, as the prices graded are double the White cover. Any info would be great. |

3rd print is Knull 1st cover appearance and smaller print run than 1st print. That’s pretty much it.

Happy to help. Now I’m seriously considering selling my one copy I bought new. As the price keeps rising I’m thinking others may want to own it more than I do, lol.

A friend of mine bought 3 of the third print from the comic mint when it came out. He gave me a copy at the time and I just thought “meh, it’s a third print”. That book is in for grading now and I’m pretty sure he would kill me if I sold it.

I think I’m still bitter on new books because of what happened in the 90s with all the variants. I’m starting to see history repeat itself. Too many variants for my liking. |

@Tedsaid you right. I was ignoring it... much like most collectors are, lol. It’s a great book to own, but doesn’t get much credit since it is a store exclusive and a higher issue number, therefore not also being his 1st full appearance issue as #3 3rd print is.

Here's an interesting thing ... about a year ago I found a batch of Venom #3, regular cover, on sale at Unknown Comics. I bought 6 at $30 each, which was a big gamble for me at the time. (Well, I mean, I felt pretty good about it. But if I'd felt more confident, I would have bought more copies!) Anyway, right after I bought mine, I made a post here with the title: Hot Books Cheap - HURRY! Unknown Comics - Venom #3 I'm curious: did anyone else pick up some copies? @Drogio replied in that thread and said: "I think the 3rd print may be the copy to have now," and boy was he right. The third print is selling north of $900 graded 9.8 now, about twice the regular cover. (Raws at the time were about $30 on eBay, and I did not pick up any.) Also, a shout-out to @poka for saying, back in March: "@Tedsaid if i were you - i would keep the Venom 3 - if rumours are true - then it is in for a big uptick." Well, THAT was correct, sir. Since then I've sold five copies and they were: $130 (April 29th - auction, the one poka was referring to) $150 (May 13th) $170 (May 20th) $180 (May 27th) $450 (July 15th) So, listen to poka, folks. I just got word that my most recent raw graded at 9.8. That makes me something like 16 for 16 9.8 on this book, which is crazy-lucky. Also, about five weeks ago I said: "I recently paid the most I've ever paid for raws: $80.00 each on two different auctions. One was perfect and is on it's way; and the second, the seller flaked out on me, never sent it. (eBay just refunded me.) But I think I may be done buying this raw ... they are getting too expensive! Two other auctions I was bidding on went for $100 each." Well, that turned out to be a lie. I decided to buy a raw for $125 two weeks ago ($140 with tax and shipping), and two more 10 days ago at $180 each ($197 with tax and shipping). They are on their way for either a pre-screen grade or a press. The "perfect" copy for $80 I mentioned previously, by the way, is the 9.8 I just got word on. Five is enough risk for me for now on this book. And the prices have stabilized at $450 or so for graded, $200+ for raw 9.8 candidates. What do you think, @poka? Will there be another burst when the big Knull storyline takes off around the end of the year? Here are two raws I would recommend, if anyone wants to get a 9.8 candidate for half the price of a 9.8 graded ... this one and this one. Both look very nice, but the $205 one is the better bet. Look closely at the pics. Anyway, both need a press to make sure to get over the hump. ![]() |

I started getting the new Venom series on my pull list, immediately liked #1. So for whatever reason I decided to get not only every issue, but every printing of every issue. I ended up with all printings of all issues thru #20 or so, all for cover price. I’ve only got one copy of each, so I’m struggling to sell the ones that have exploded in value, mostly #3’s. It would break up my “complete” collection. Decisions...

Quote:Originally Posted by Joosh Well, I really like Donny Cates' writing, too. But I can't imagine these books having much longer-term value. Even if Knull is in the next Venom movie, I don't think he's at the level of, say, Thanos, or Darkseid. On the other hand, all hot modern comics are REALLY hot right now. So it's a great time to slab 'em and sell 'em. Maybe in a year or two you can buy it back, if you find you really miss it? Should be much cheaper by then. (There are still a LOT of raws out there.) |

Thanks to the logic stated above, I’ll let my 1st & 3rd print #3 go to the fevered ones as soon as I get them back from grading.

Quote:Originally Posted by Joosh Venom #4 main cover tends to sell well, too, if you are patient. I've sold three in July alone, for $119.99, $129.99, and $149.99. That's after they were just sitting around for months, not selling. But raws of #4 seem ridiculously easy to come by. At least, for me. I guess that's partially because one of my sources for Venom #3 over the last year was usually selling it with a lot of Venom #1-6. So I had to buy all of them to get the #3's I wanted. Anyway, I have a lot of extras now, especially of #1, #2, #5, and #6. The "secret variant" cover for #7 tends to sell well, too. You may want to consider selling that also. |

Between stimulus money and and the Federal Unemployment subsidy, many younger collectors who love these modern books have more discretionary spending money than they ever had in the past...or are likely to ever have in the future. When your income suddenly jumps from $400 a week to over $1,000 a week, well you can buy a lot of comic books that you had your eye on for the last few years. |

Quote:Originally Posted by EbaySeller Well, no one's income went from $400 a week to $1000 a week. With unemployment insurance you typically only get about 50% of your income. So a person making only $400 a week would get just $200 in UI benefit. Add in the $600 Covid supplemental, and you get to $800 a week, or $41,600 a year. That's not very much. For comparison, I made almost that much 25 years ago working 50 hours a week delivering pizza. Anyway, not a lot of people make only $10 an hour either. That is just way low. So I am okay with them getting a little extra now. They will just spend it, anyway, which helps the economy. And they can only get the supplemental if Covid is actually preventing them from working. So that's good, too. But it's a good point ... even if the UI benefits just replace (some or all) of the missing income, that is significant for the comic book collecting industry. I think what is even more significant is that no one is going to conventions. No one is going on vacation and spending thousands of dollars doing that. People aren't going out to plays or movies, and are hardly ever going to restaurants. My mom was shocked at how much money my parents were saving each month just by getting food to go instead of sitting down to eat at the restaurant, or going out less often. But especially the conventions. Even with all the in-house signing opportunities CBCS and CGC have put on, people are spending WAY less on autographs, for example. All those movie and TV stars? They routinely charge $200 - $400 a pop. That adds up very quickly. Comic creators are usually more in the $10 or $20 range, and are rarely as high as $50 or $60. So all these thousands and thousands of people who LIKE to spend money on comic books and comic conventions? They are saving thousands of dollars by NOT going to them ... and they gots to spend that money somewhere! (Not to mention, all the extra time to do online shopping. Comics may be killing it right now but so is Amazon.) |
