Is it me..or is this CGC grading gone bad...12352

Collector Darkseid_of_town private msg quote post Address this user
Makes me wonder if people are triple clicking the images to bring up the magnified versions where you can view the details more closely. That 8.5 very definitely has color breaks on the upper third of the book at the page side of the cover.

Sure, here you go, these are the back covers, first the 8.5 followed by each of the 7.0's

Pretty stunning when you see them together

@moodswing yeah. The confusion was they bought it off of me for $200 credit. I took it

If you mean copies of Mister Miracle 4, I would consider them as well if you are selling. I am buying copies of 4 and 6 in particular.

@gotham44 I want to see if I got this straight. According to your post on your original thread, this was your sister-in-law's very first comic book.

She wanted to get it graded, probably for sentimental reasons. CGC graded it a 9.6. When it came back with that grade, you felt it was over graded and sent it back to CGC to have them look at it and to possibly get regraded. Somehow, they appear to have lost it and gave you $200 credit with them. Did I get that right?

I'm not trying to bash CGC here, sometimes things happen and I'm glad they did something to try to rectify it. I haven't looked at the value yet, so I'm not sure if they offered fmv, more than fmv or less than fmv.

I'm thinking more about your sister-in-law. How did she handle it?

Yeah. They didnt say they lost it but they've had it since Jan 23. I sent 4 emails. Only got a reply about 3 weeks ago. Im assuming they lost it. I actually sent in a higher graded copy of the book that I had for her. I also gave her 25 bucks and am using the credit to grade the book for her. So she basically got 45 bucks and a higher graded book in return for her lower grade book. She's happy

After seeing the backs, I would still say the 8.5 is a grade above yours. Maybe leaning towards an 8 instead of an 8.5 but like I said, give or take a .5 up or down.

When I magnify the images using the triple click thing what I keep getting repeatedly as well as from people who are holding the the two 7's in hand at this end is vastly different

In general its agreed like others have said the two 7.0's are roughly 7.5 actual grade, with one being a bit better than it was graded.

The 8.5 which you can examine at MCS auction that sells later tonight , and can be brought into larger detail on their site is at best a 6.5 if not lower, given the large number of spine tics, the crushed upper and lower spine corners, color breaks on the right upper third of the cover, etc.

Met with my old friend that I have collected with the last 35-40 years last night for a trade session/dinner and let him look it all over. He felt the 7's presented well for 7.0 and should perhaps be 7.5, but graded the MCS copy at something below a 7 himself.
In any event I changed my bidding plans and will not be pursuing the copy selling tonight, so for those that feel it delivers the grade advertised, it should sell cheaply and be quite a deal for someone.

Sorry to say this but I did talk about this with a former CGC grader in 2017. And what he told me does validate all claims @Darkseid_of_town have made. Plus the only way a comic can have its grade be reduced is during the encapsulation process. But after my chat with him that sounds more like a CBCS issue than just a means to excuse any graded comics that CGC execs allowed to be graded loosely.

So looking at the comic I have already noticed that the top staple is misaligned, and has either a tear or a crease that is breaking color. Going down, the spine also looks to house some creases (or tears) that have minor color break(s). And between the "25 cents" and "BIGGER" it looks like there is a color rub. Now looking at the lower right corner and up, there are signs of folds/creases and definite color rub/break. This, atop of the blunting on the lower left side of the comic book.

And if there are signs that the colors on the cover are bright and retain virtually no loss of reflectivity, they might have used the inner pages as a means to merit it an 8.5. But seeing signs of potential color rub on the comic (most specifically the "E" in "MIRACLE", the same color pages saved it from being a 7.0 or 7.5.

Which is why I feel this is a stronger candidate of being an 8.0 than a 8.5. And that is without seeing the comic in person. And also using Heritage Auction's definition of what a 7.0, 8.0 and 9.0 should be.

MCS's policy for graded books is clearly stated on their platform:

"Buyer responsibility and CGC, CBCS, and PGX comics: if buying comics graded and encased by CGC, CBCS, or PGX, please closely inspect the large, high resolution cover images we have provided prior to purchase. By bidding on or purchasing a third-party graded comic you are acknowledging your acceptance of the grade assigned by the certification company. By purchasing a third-party graded comic you accept that MyComicShop is not responsible for the grade assigned by the grade certification company."

If you don't like the grade then don't buy it. Kind of simple, no?

Watching the race of X-men 54, a PGX 9.2 vs an MCS 8.0. So far the MCS 8.0 is $6 ahead with 45 minutes to go.

I've been seeing it pop up for several months now. Haven't figured out yet why it should be more interesting now than it has been for the last 40 years. But that happens a lot these days.

3 straight posts mischaracterizing what I wrote, and second straight post of telling another board member what to do.

Yep, GAC seems to know the plan so I quote him again from the Hulk 181 thread.

Towmater, if you are done making problems here, please take it somewhere else. The problem began with you going after subtitles for discussing the books the thread is about
Since then you have done multiple postings doing nothing but harassing me, and disrupting the conversation. Enough...move along.
