Is it me..or is this CGC grading gone bad...12352

Collector Darkseid_of_town private msg quote post Address this user
I hope the book I am speaking of belongs to noone here. If it does , let me know and I will remove my post. In the current MCS auction is a copy of Mister Miracle 4.....its graded CGC 8.5. I pulled up the image and was pondering...but for me, it isnt close. Does anyone else feel this book rates an 8.5 ?

I compared with two of my copies, both 7.0 and bought in January this year. If the 8.5 is graded right mine should be much higher than 7.0

How does anyone else see it? I have felt for months like CGC grading has gotten pretty far off in relation to what I consider even close but wow

@Darkseid_of_town I agree with you. Not an 8.5 IMHO regardless of what the back cover and interior are

Without seeing the back covers, and really without holding the book, it’s difficult to make these judgements. But here’s my two cents. If those are small tears at the top staple, then I think the 8.5 could be slightly overgraded. Your top 7.0 looks like it might be slightly undergraded, and the bottom one looks about right to me for a 7.0. I believe the look (and sometimes feel) of the whole book needs to be incorporated into a grade. I also think the white pages (not too common on these books) might have put the top book in a more favorable light. And since CGC doesn’t provide free grader’s notes, you can’t easily find out out if there are any minor stains, smudges, fingerprints, etc. that could be impacting your two books. It is interesting to see them side by side, so to speak, and realize how close in condition they are.

Grades look fine to me give or take point 5 up or down. Cgc is very inconsistent with their grading now though.

I saw alot of bad happening on the 8.5 ...the spine corners top and bottom are badly crunched. the right hand where you would turn the pages, has a large color break. The spine has numerous tics as well. I think on magnification the top staple does seem to have tears as well.

The 4 corners are just not consistent with an 8.5 grade. And i'm just getting started. That bottom right - sheesh.

Cannot see a problem myself; no way to judge “undergrading” however. Always possible the 8.5 has “shaken comic syndrome”

I'm ok with the 8.5, maybe it should be an 8.0?

Without commenting on the books specifically, I think CGC’s insistence on hiding Grader’s Notes behind a paywall feeds into the idea that CGC has loose grading (deserved or not). Most people won’t get to see any justification for the grade

Looking at your 8.5, I kinda like the original CBCS labels. The white label makes the entire slab look cleaner.

I don't see the problem. without having them in hand and seeing the backs it pointless to even venture a guess, Based on Only three photos the grades seem accurate enough to me. The 8.5 is obviously nicer than the two 7.0's IMHO.

I also don't believe CGC is substantially looser or tighter than CBCS, both have examples of weaker or stronger grades at any given time, and the books here certainly don't make a strong case supporting your complaint IMHO.

So... the short answer to your Topic question Michael is...... Yes.... Its You

All I can say is if an 8.5 can have that badly of blunted and crushed corners, especially on the spine, a rip by the upper staple, at least 12 visible spine tics, and a third of the right hand edge of the comic showing color breaks then my lose silver age collection must all be at least 9.0s I am gonna be rich !

I am glad someone besides me sees the issues with the book...even without a back cover shot , man thats awful. Alot of color break on the right, and wow thats a ton of spine tics...nevermind the smashed corners top and bottom

Go ahead and get started...how many spine tics did you count? I saw at least 15....top staple is almost blown from how its ripped around it....those color breaks out to the right edge..I cannot see how that gets an 8.5 if my two copies are both 7.0 and you assume a consistent applied set of grading standards.

Just to be open, I bought the two copies at 7.0 grade and felt they were nice for the grade, but appropriate. Quite happy with the Barda twins as I call them.

Compared to both your 7s, it looks to be at least a full grade higher especially that second 7 of yours. Post pictures of the backs and we can better judge the grade on yours. I have seen several 9.6s graded by cgc with at least 3-4 spine tics. I don't think they grade them as harshly.

CGC just bought a book off of me for 200 credit because I sent it in to get regraded after they claimed an 8.0 was a 9.6. They took it back (I think they lost it since they had it since january) and said they were doing a REVIEW on it. Their grades are slipping

@gotham44

Do I have this right? They gave your book a 9.6 grade and you thought it was an 8.0?

I think the grades are accurate. The spine corners of the 8.5 are just a bit worn. The only color break I see is very small in the bottom right corner. I don't see the one you mention on the right edge, but there is one on the 2nd 7.0, and a few on the 1st one. The 1st 7.0 also has a larger color break bend on the top right corner. And the 2nd 7.0 has all those color breaks crunch lines along the top. Those really pull a grade down.

I would probably give the 1st 7.0 a 7.5 grade. Those color breaks are minor, even though there are multiples. But the other two look good.

But yes, CGC grading is getting bad lately, in general. Very inconsistent lately.

@moodswing Yeah. Theres no way I could sell the bbok witha 9.6 grade. Someone would think that I tampered with the case. I actually posted about it on here back in December or January when I got it. You could see the pics there

@gotham44

Now you mention it, I remember the thread. That is crazy. I can understand a little difference and grade but there is a huge difference between a 9.6 and an 8. A casual comic collector should be able to tell the difference. Combine that with the "fact" that 3 graders are supposed to grade each comic makes it even more ridiculous.

Makes me wonder if people are triple clicking the images to bring up the magnified versions where you can view the details more closely. That 8.5 very definitely has color breaks on the upper third of the book at the page side of the cover.

Sure, here you go, these are the back covers, first the 8.5 followed by each of the 7.0's

Pretty stunning when you see them together
