The old debate...Giant size 1 vs Hulk 181....12286

Collector* Towmater private msg quote post Address this user
Paid $35 for my 181 copy which is a 3.5. Paid $100 for my Giant Sized. The giant sized was pressed and came back as a 7.0. They are both books that people would pay in the neighborhood of $1500.00 each for today. No way I'd invest that type of money in either. The hobby's prices have gotten insane.

I will say this though. If 2 spider clone characters are fetching 1.5k, when we get some xmen news about any of these characters, I fully expect the comics to really blow up. If a variant can reach 3k I can only imagine what a comic book franchise with a large following like the X-men will bring in. I didn't know anyone reading ultimate spider-man before Miles blew up. I at least know and talk to current x-men fans.

I'm wondering if people's answers will change if we re-framed the question: Assuming you own neither one and you have exactly $1,500 to spend, which of these two books would you buy currently at Fair Market Value?

I'm sure someone will say both or neither, but how about if you had to choose either option A or option B? A copy of Hulk 181 with $1,500 FMV or a nicer copy of GSX1 with $1,500 FMV? For me it would be GSX1, hands down. Doesn't mean I wouldn't love to own a copy of Hulk 181, doesn't mean that I think GSX1 should be more valuable in the same grade, I just think GSX1 is the book that will see the larger growth in demand going forward.

@EbaySeller

My answer is that there are few books I would drop $1500+ on. The market and the pricing has moved beyond my comfort level. When books like Teen Titans #12 (2017) are selling for stupid prices it makes me believe that there is too much speculation driving the market. At some point it isn't sustainable. I remember the music ending in the mid-1990's. Whomever gets caught holding overpriced books when the music stops playing I hope they are young and they do not have much invested in them. That way they can recover.

The market is ripe for sure...way too much speculation, and flipping going on. Far too many inexperienced collectors relying heavily on apps, and pricing structures that do not do the job or tend to spec up certain characters , titles and issues.
A lot of peace of mind in making those higher end investments in silver and golden age vehicles that have the track record and proven over the long haul worth the expense.
I don't think I have ever given over 425 dollars for a comic in my life..that I can think of. Right place, right time, good friends, and a solid effort to pay attention and buy based on the market and reality vs the pied piper of Wizard, CVM, or whoever is playing the music next.

Trimpe's Iconic cover wins hands down every time to me.

This one always sets me laughing at best....the giant size, with the new characters bursting through a monochromatic image of the original team has massive depth..the balance of colors and depths is stunning, in particular yellow. The action and movement of each character suggests action. Lettering and title block are confined almost entirely to the top quarter of the cover, and tightly arranged for optimal use of space...

Then there is that 181 cover....a third of which is taken by the logo, and no less than two huge blurbs announcing Wolverine's arrival..gaudy and utterly wasted space.Look first at Wendigo...out of scale, and drawn poorly in the background...whats going on with his legs anyways? And of course, another gaudy badly placed balloon of lettering....looking at wolverine...we get one set of claws that appear longer and gently curving while the others appear shorter and more drastically curved..so which is it?Look at wolverines face...omg what are those lines around his mouth? Is he wearing a mouthguard to create that effect with his teeth? Why is the sky red?Follow that white swoosh..is that the arc from the hulk's punch? Who throws a punch from behind their back in an upwards arc OVER their shoulder and down?
Yeah no thanks, I will stick with the Gil Kane cover, with its balance and symmetry and posing that makes sense.

Using ebay sellers posed question, you have 2500 bucks and could buy either cover, as original art...where are you hanging the piece from Giant size 1 in your room?

I dont see it as a dead horse, given the market movement. I see it as studying an upcoming shift in the market people should be watching and realize.
Wolverine appeared apparently in movies for a solid 17 years from what I read yesterday. Now with Marvel moving to acquire rights for x men, as well as many other characters, it is definitely a timely and worthy topic.
For those who refuse to change their thinking and cling to the idea wolverine must rule, it might be a dead horse. Some of us think otherwise and are watching the potential

so its 7/6/2020

Lets make our own poll informally...

Which comic do you see the best investment the upcoming 4 year period in equal grade and so forth.….Giant size 1, or Hulk 181

Everyone gets a single vote and I will try to keep a running total.
Perhaps in ninety days or six months we can pull it up and see where the market has gone. I took the luxury last night of recording the most recent sale for each book, in each grade down to 5.0 on GPA. lets see where the evidence goes.

My vote is obviously GS 1

The biggest reason that Giant Sized has moved in pricing is that it was a forgotten key for a long period of time. Speculators found it and saw that there was meat on the bone" to flip it. The same isn't true for Hulk 181 as that ship sail long ago. Setting up a poll of which one is going to go up in value the most is setting up a poll one already knows the answer.

yes and precisely but as you can clearly see, there were multiple posts arguing otherwise within this very thread, from very ardent people who have stated categorically that IH 181 is "Hands down" Forever and always" "the best possible choice" as the all time king and be all of marvel comics.

I think given that is the case, a poll is definitely fair game and quite worth the effort. Lets see how it plays out...

Think doing it be cash value is fine, across several grades.

If the measure is which will be worth more, bottom line, I'm voting 181. If it's percent gain I would lean toward GSX. If it's dollar gain I would slightly lean GSX but don't have a strong feeling. The gain numbers will vary much more across different grades anyway.

why cant we check them all...actual cash value, percent gain, and dollar gain...the gain numbers will indeed vary across different grades but it will allow us to see if the two are closer in higher grades etc

If we want to play the percentage gain game then pick a modern that gets hot over a 90 to 180 day period. Percentage wise it will win hands down over either of them.

Fingers crossed in the hopes we don't enter the return on investment realm. That just takes all the joy out of the hobby. Nothing like running your collection like a business.

No, by all means, let people do their thing. I think others watching see the intentional jacking and understand what is being done, and it doesn't reflect well for those encouraging nor participating....by all means continue with the fun.

Heart want what the heart wants???

I see lots about potential this and potential that and that's fine but then the question is more philosophical in nature it is really more investment or collection?

I collect - that is, I buy what I like and almost never sell - I like that the books have "value" but realistically I'm not selling - maybe my kid will (caveat - I need to purge so I will be selling in the next few years 8.5k books - down to 1 or 2 thousand??)

Both books have lots going for them - both have iconic covers both have 1st appearances, both are pricey and both will likely continue to increase in "value".

If I were to get Hulk 181 I could sell all my other Wolverine books, likewise with GSX I could feel ok about off loading all my other "X" books

I think with the switch to Disney at some point both X-Men and Wolverine will turn up - it's hard to imagine that Wolverine or Patch or whatever won't be a major part of that - Marvel was basically Wolverine publishing house for a while there - seemed like every title had him

Will Disney push the other GSX characters with a lean towards today's social climate - 100% - why not! about time!! need more than white guys out there. Will there be an increase in value and will that % increase be higher than Hulk 181 - time will tell, but neither will be a bad purchase

If you really want to invest then stocks/bonds/mutual funds exist and over time you will make way more with compounding interest.

Comics is just playing - buy what your heart wants....if it wants both then buy both!!

For youngsters out there - this is 1 way to afford a grail. Have discipline...know what you want and what you are willing to pay...stop buying over hyped variants and cut down your pull list and save that $$ for the grail you are looking for - you will be shocked how quickly that $$ you were spending will accumulate!

He has lived here since he was small enough to fit in my hand and its home for him, but it has to be confusing. Thrown in my other cat Ziva, a shelter rescue who is perfectly described as grumpy cat, that hides most of the time, seldom emerges and when she does its to be fussy and complain!
