#186 has perhaps the calmest Barry Windsor-Smith cover I can think of, since most of what I know from him comes from Weapon X.

Forge has taken in Storm, who understandably is struggling with the loss of her powers. She goes through some of the stage of grief and the two grow closer, until she overhears a call between Forge and Gyrich and learns that Forge invented the neutralizer. Then she moves to anger, especially when she finds out that he's a mutant, and leaves. Xavier, unable to find Storm with Cerebro, searches for Rogue instead. Rogue happens to be saving Val Cooper from the Dire Wraiths who want to replace her, as Rogue wants to find out what happened to Storm too.

#286 continues the X-Men's adventures in Mikhail's other world. They ask Mikhail to close the portal, which is still expanding across Earth, but he will not because of his previous experience. When he first came to this world he was attacked, and he attacked back but it killed thousands of people and his wife. The portal takes a backseat to war as Archangel is mind-controlled into leading the army against the rebels. Fortunately Jean is able to break the conditioning. When Colossus is injured, Mikhail finally uses his power and is able to close the portal with the X-Men's help. He gets the team and himself back to Earth.

A Jim Lee cover and (shared) writing credit.

#386 has some relatively unusual heroics for the team. After all the hubbub in Russia, Gambit takes the crew to New Orleans to relax. Unfortunately they get a distress call from Lee Forrester and her boat, which is caught in Hurricane Sam. Storm, Rogue, and Cable fly to help the ship but also have to help a transport plane as well. They save the airmen and decide to push Lee's ship into the eye of the hurricane. When they get there Rogue is pulled away by undertow but sees a vision of Cyclops and follows it back to the ship. Cable also has a vision of Cyclops. Storm says that it still isn't safe yet, so I guess we'll find out what that's about next issue.

#486 continues the battle against Vulcan. Darwin is able to rescue Xavier from the M'Kraan Crystal and Nightcrawler teleports them to the ship. Vulcan is about to kill Lilandra but Corsair intervenes, and Vulcan kills Corsair. The X-Men and Starjammers are shocked with the patricide and up their attack. Lilandra sets the ship to return to Earth and puts it on remote. When they land, Xavier realizes that he has his powers back thanks to the crystal, and Hepzibah realizes that she doesn't have a reason to be on the Starjammers if Corsair isn't there. On the flip side, Deathbird calls a retreat and Havok decides that the Starjammers should have a Summers leading them against Vulcan. He, Polaris, and Rachel all join the squad.

3rd series #22, Legacy #586. Magneto returns to the "school" with Dazzler, who is still suitably pissed. Hijack heads to the actual school where the team is still trying to protect the students and fight the uncontrolled helicarrier when Sentinels show up as well. Fortunately Hijack has the helicarrier attack the Sentinels and end the threat. Magik teleports the Uncanny squad to the school and everyone tracks down the mastermind in a SHIELD bunker. It's Dark Beast, who experimented on himself too much and orchestrated everything as a final attack on Cyclops. Maria Hill realizes that Mystique has been impersonating Dazzler and wants the real thing back on SHIELD, but Dazzler has had enough and is back to being an X-Men girl. SHIELD helps clean up the mansion.

#187 picks up right after 186 with Storm leaving Forge's Eagle Plaza. She hears an alarm go off and sees some weird stuff, as the Dire Wraiths are appearing as various people (FBI agents, security guards) to try and get into the building. The Wraiths attack Storm as well but she is saved by Naze. The two head up through the building to help Forge, who is attacked by Wraiths both from below and from outside. Naze leaves quickly though, for some reason, when Rogue and Colossus break through the ceiling. They continue fighting, sometimes against illusions of Wraiths, until Rom and Starshine appear. The Wraiths drop their spells to focus their attack only to find that Forge can use holograms to make illusions, too. The Wraiths are defeated by apparently Naze snuck off to steal some of Forge's magic power as suddenly reality tears open.

#287 finds Bishop, Malcolm, and Randall hunting down the last group of Fitzroy's criminals from the future. They take out most of them, but the tables turn when an explosion kills nearly everyone, including Malcolm and Randall. Bishop is ready to take on the last two when the X-Men arrive and mistakenly attack him for shooting at Storm (actually, the bad guy behind her). Bishop is injured and passes out and we see what happened in his time: tracking Fitzroy in some sewers, they find a recording from Jean Grey that the X-Men were betrayed and killed by one of their own. Bishop talks to the Witness (maybe Gambit?), the last man to see the X-Men alive, but he refuses to help. That's when Fitzroy went back in time, opened the portal for the criminals, and Bishop came through. He wakes up in the X-Men infirmary, talks with Xavier, and the X-Men have a new team member.

#387 takes us into space again. But first, the X-Men are recuperating from saving Lee's ship from the hurricane. Storm is requested by a representative of the Black Panther, and she leaves. The hospital is attacked by Mandroids and Shi'Ar guardsmen, mostly to distract the rest of the team while Starhammer grabs Jean. Starhammer is actually a D'Bari, from the planet destroyed by Dark Phoenix, and wants to kill Jean; she lets him do so on the Astral Plane. The X-Men finish up with the riffraff and help Jean. Beast is worried when the aliens say they are trapped on Earth. That makes more sense as we shift to Xavier in Shi'Ar space. He meets Lilandra and the Starjammers, where Corsair is none too pleased about Cyclops' death. Xavier's mission to redeem himself is going to be harder once he hears that the intergalactic community has decided to send all their worst criminals to Earth as a prison planet.

#487 switches from Shi'Ar space to the Morlock tunnels. Masque leads a group that is chasing down Caliban and Leech, although they only want Leech. At the mansion, Xavier has 'overheard' (with his newly-regained powers) that SHIELD is looking for Magneto. He wants to find Magneto first so they fire up the Cerebra machine, but he detects something else instead. Warpath is out on the grounds and smells a familiar scent, and finds Caliban has made it, although shrunken back to his original size. They figure that the Morlocks, and Masque in particular, are behind it but don't know why. We see the Morlocks again, and apparently they want Leech as insurance for getting Magneto to not kill them while they convince him that mutants can still rule the world.

3rd series #23, Legacy # 587. Everyone is unhappy. Magik, Dazzler, Emma, and Magneto go to Madripoor to look for Mystique but can't find her; Dazzler is unhappy. Cyclops asks Eva what happened when she blinked out of time but she doesn't want to tell him; Eva is unhappy when he says that the Cuckoos had already told him. As part of the Original Sin event, She Hulk receives a package at work. She goes to the mansion to read Xavier's will, but she can't do it without all the proper parties present - like Cyclops. We also meet a new mutant, Matthew Molloy. A year ago his wife was killed in the Skrull invasion. Today he coincidentally runs into his wife's sister, and despite her friendliness and offer of support, he is overwhelmed and destroys everything in the nearby area.

#188 continues the Dire Wraiths attack, which is currently shadowy beings from another realm. Storm frees Forge, who tries to find Naze but can't. Finally Storm remembers that she left a Wraith on the roof when she first got into the building; Nightcrawler takes Forge up and they kill it, ending the shadowy threat. The Wraith that had taken Naze's body tries to call an even stronger power, but it possesses both the Wraith and Naze (and thus we have the first appearance of the Adversary). Afterward at the mansion, Nightcrawler is talking about disbanding the X-Men. Conditions are getting worse, not better, and people have died, including Jean. Rachel, who was eavesdropping, attacks angrily because Jean is her mother. After calming down she tells the X-Men about her past, where the X-Men are killed in front of her and the Days of Future Past happen. Rachel says that at least they still had the hope of the X-Men name, and Kurt decides to stay.

#288 has Bishop put under Storm's guidance as he gets used to being an X-Man. He asks to go to the city so he can start learning the culture, so Storm takes her whole squad out. Bishop stumbles across the last future criminal that he was chasing when the X-Men got him, and begins to attack. He and the criminal are tearing things up all over the place so Storm tries to stop Bishop, but it gives him enough power to kill the criminal. Storm shows Bishop all the damage and injured civilians, and he is rightly shocked. Later on he promises to listen to Storm better.

#388 starts with Senator Robert Kelly running for President. He is giving a speech just a few days before the election and says that the problem of the 21st century is mutants. We see various X-folks watching the speech on TV, including Magneto, Moira, X-Force, Generation X, and finally at the mansion. As we go around the world, Kelly is saying that mutants may or may not be another species, and many are terrorists. Mystique is also watching, and plans to take another shot at assassinating Kelly. She also meets with Sabretooth and Toad, the current Brotherhood, and shows that she is working on the final test of a version of the Legacy Virus that only affects humans. At the mansion, Rogue's powers have gone wonky and she is manifesting anyone she's ever touched at random and without control. After an outburst, she tells the team she felt Mystique on Muir Island. Rogue talks Xavier into letting her go check it out even with her powers being on the fritz, so she goes with Bishop and Wolverine. A few of the other X-Men are at Kelly's speech as undercover security, so they hear him wrap up by saying that it would be easy to lash out at mutants, but it would be wrong. That's when the Brotherhood busts in, and the entirety of Muir Island appears to explode.

#488 is part of the Endangered Species crossover, which started in X-Men and will continue in X-Factor. Masque and the Morlocks are up to something, which the X-Men are trying to figure out. Warpath, Storm, Hepzibah, and Caliban go into the sewers to look around, and Warpath accidentally destroys a wall while fighting an alligator (sewer alligators...). They see that all four of their names have been written on the wall, which seems... prescient. Xavier and Nightcrawler take the Blackbird to try and find Magneto. Masque disfigures a train full of subway riders to show them how the Morlocks feel. In a second story, Beast has been asking all the scientists of the Marvel Universe (although seemingly mostly bad guys) for help with something, but none of them will. He decides that the High Evolutionary might have been hiding something, so he goes to Wundagore.

3rd series #24, Legacy #588. The X-Men talk about Cyclops, since he has to be present for Xavier's will, and Beast says he knows where he is. They go tell Cyclops about the will, tersely, and after they leave the Uncanny team decides to go. She-Hulk starts in on the will, which reveals that Xavier is married to Mystique. There's some mild discussion until they see a little Shi'Ar device in the will, which has a hologram of Xavier. He begins to tell the story of his darkest secret, which the X-Men must now take up. It involves a mutant so powerful that it would have compromised mutant-human relations. In the meantime, back with Matthew Molloy, Maria Hill shows up as a hologram. She asks if he knows what's going on and if he's a mutant, but Matthew starts freaking out because of all the destruction around him. There used to be people. He sees SHIELD agents circling in on him and loses control again, destroying the area around him and all the agents.

For an unremembered reason, I have two of this one.

#189 has Storm leave the X-Men, since her powers are gone, for Africa. While most of the team is at the port to say goodbye, Rachel and Amara (Magma from the New Mutants) are out shopping. They happen to see Selene, who they both have a history with. They follow her to the Hellfire Club, where Selene strongarms Sebastian Shaw into making her the new Black Queen. As thanks, she brainwashes the ladies and gives them to Shaw. However, Rachel isn't actually brainwashed and is able to psychically provoke Magma into using her powers and causing an earthquake. The X-Men arrive, break up the fight, and Shaw says that kidnapping wasn't his idea. In a side story, someone finds a necklace that apparently belongs to Kulan Gath.

#289 coincidentally concerns Storm and Forge too. Mystique is at the mansion as a guest of Wolverine (presumably from a different book) and starts some drama with Angel, who is unhappy with his fairly new blue skin and metal wings. Resolving it leads to Storm and Forge having it out, with Forge unhappy about how much time Storm spends on the team (and maybe Bishop). Forge proposes, thinking that will help things. In the meantime, Iceman has been prepping for a big dinner with his girlfriend Opal and his parents. Bobby's dad, ever the bigot, is unhappy that his son is dating "an Oriental". Opal's cousin, Hiro, quickly interrupts the dinner as he says that Bobby's parents are in danger. The announcement is quickly followed by an attack by the Cyberai (apparently late-run X-Factor villains).

#389 hopes you don't ask what happened to the Dream's End arc, because who knows! Instead we have Dr. Reyes trying to quit her habit of the power-enhancing drug Rave. Kitty is also missing, after looking into one of Destiny's diaries, so Wolverine and Rogue flip through it to see if they can get any clues. It says something about the two of them confronting Mystique in the hospital along with Gambit and Storm. Mystique warns them about a dark future for mutants and says that she gave Xavier all the diaries she had after she couldn't figure out what they meant.

#489 continues both of the ongoing crossovers. On the Morlocks side, Storm asks the Fantastic Four to help with figuring out where the Morlocks might be, since they have fancy 3D maps. Nightcrawler and Xavier are still looking for Magneto, with Nightcrawler becoming more and more concerned at how often Xavier uses his psychic powers without people's consent. Masque and Skids have an argument over Masque's plans, which turns into a fight when ONE soldiers swarm in. The X-Men get there with the fight over and only two soldiers left alive, but at least the ONE Sentinels that come next don't attack once Skids reveals that she's an agent of SHIELD. On the Beast/Endangered Species side, he meets up with Dark Beast, who offers data on the people who ran the Neverland Weapon X facility. Beast decides to work with him, as we are into prime "Beast is a terrible decisionmaker" territory.

3rd series #25, Legacy #589 has a not very Bachalo-y cover by Bachalo (but interesting). Xavier's hologram explains how in the very early X-Men days he met a boy named Matthew Malloy. The boy was extremely powerful, able even to expel Xavier from his mind, and had killed his parents without meaning to. Any time Matthew is even a bit upset, he uses his power. Xavier decided to appear to Matthew as another boy to earn his trust, then removed his memories and put him in an orphanage run by a colleague. Every year he visits Matthew to make sure the mental blocks are still there. With Xavier dead, the X-Men have to keep an eye on Matthew now. After they verify that the blocks are still in place, they can hear the end of the will. The X-Men get ready to try to find Matthew, not knowing all the exploding he's been doing in South Carolina.

#190 adds some swords and sorcery as Kulan Gath has put a magical barrier around Manhattan, turning it into a Olde Tyme place. Pretty much everyone believes that they have always been whatever Kulan wants, except for Spider-Man who is hunted by members of the New Mutants and Morlocks acting as Gath's personal guard. Callisto and Storm get in a fight and get washed out of the barrier in a river; they get recruited by Selene, who remembers who she is and is an old enemy of Gath's. The guard comes to arrest Magik but a brawl starts between them and some other amnesic heroes, but Magik is able to free Colossus from the spell with her Soulsword. Selene comes to help and kills the Morlocks but is captured by Gath. Callisto and Storm arrive and the heroes who know who they are retreat to the tunnels to plan an attack on Gath.

#290 has more Storm and Forge drama. Forge talks to Jean about his proposal and asks if she will use her powers to see how Storm really feels; he takes Jean's refusal to do so as a sign that Storm doesn't. Mystique continues stirring up trouble around the mansion and Forge realizes that she needs him more than the X-Men do. So Forge goes to Storm and takes back his proposal, in a pretty dickish way, and says he's leaving with Mystique. Storm later says that she was going to say yes. On the action front, Iceman's parents are able to escape the restaurant where they're attacked, but Iceman and Hiro aren't having a lot of luck fighting the Cyburai. Hiro tells Iceman to leave with Opal and, before Bobby can come back, blows up his suit, the Cyburai, and the restaurant.

#390 has Beast finally figure out a cure for the Legacy Virus, based on Moira MacTaggart's work. Unfortunately, as Cecelia Reyes realizes, it will only work if someone takes it and then uses their power, which will kill them. The guys go to play basketball and talk about what it means to live as a mutant, but Reyes sees that Colossus is acting strangely. Colossus tells Reyes all about Magik, who died from the virus, and she realizes what he means to do but he knocks her out. Colossus takes the cure and uses his power, eliminating the virus but killing himself.

#490 has the X-Men still tracking down Masque and the Morlocks. Hepzibah and Warpath succeed, but Masque's team wins because they know what's coming. It turns out that the Morlocks had found a woman named Qwerty who could see how decisions would turn out, and did nothing because she saw the outcomes of things as minor as turning on a light. When Qwerty say M-Day coming and realized she would lose her power, she wrote down everything that she could. As such, Masque leaves Hepzibah and Warpath alive because the book doesn't say that they die. However, Masque does set off bombs in the tunnels that trap Storm and her group. In the second story, Beast is joined by Bishop in looking for his M-Day cure. Bishop takes Beast to a Mutant Growth Hormone dealer, who tells them that most of his samples became worthless on M-Day. Beast is angry but Bishop seems unbothered; he says that there seemed to be plenty of mutants in the future he came from. Beast has an idea (which presumably will turn out badly).

3rd series #26, Legacy #590. Maria Hill is trying to evacuate South Carolina to make sure Matthew Malloy doesn't kill anyone else. She recruits Exodus and someone named Headlok to get into Matthew's head, but it just hurts them. Matthew makes the skeletons of the dead SHIELD agents rise and has no idea how his powers work. Cyclops, Wolverine, Storm, and Rachel leave the mansion to go see Matthew. Back at the ranch, the students have a Danger Room training session against the Avengers. When Triage asks why they would do that, since that by definition makes them the bad guys, which leads to some uncomfortable discussion.
