#182 picks up with Rogue, who Xavier sent to New York while the rest of the team was doing their thing in Japan. She gets to the mansion and checks the phone messages (what a time!), and X-Men buddy Michael Rossi is in trouble. She flies off immediately, missing that Kitty is also in trouble. Rossi has been infiltrating SHIELD looking for info on the Hellfire Club, but he was found out by an agent who is actually a Hellfire Club agent. Spy work is hard! Rogue arrives on the helicarrier as the mole and another agent are roughing up Rossi, and is able to save Rossi but the mole kills the other agent. Rogue flies Rossi out and is acting overly familiar when she realizes that Carol Danvers used to work (and, um, play) with Rossi. Rossi is disgusted to hear what Rogue did to Carol, and back on the helicarrier Nick Fury puts out an APB for Rogue.

#282 has the X-Men take Jean's body back to the mansion, where Xavier determines that she isn't dead but instead transferred her mind into Emma Frost's body. Forge is able to use information from a destroyed Sentinel to hone in on the Upstart's base, which turns out to be in the Arctic. Speaking of which, Fitzroy is there with Emma's body and claims control of the Upstarts from Shinobi Shaw. We meet Fitzroy's assistant (lackey?) Bantam, who helps keep track of what time portals Fitzroy has opening and when they should close out from lack of energy. Fitzroy kills another Hellion, Tarot, to open a new portal and bring some goons from the future to help him. Emma is next on his list but Jean wakes her up and fights off the guards with telekinesis, which they did not expect from Emma. The X-Men arrive and storm the base, causing Fitzroy to kill the rest of the Hellions to open a giant portal. As the X-Men fight the gang of bad guys that come through, three other men come through, looking suspiciously like the guys on the cover.

I feel like 282 is an easy one to pick up because it's rarely expensive and easy to convince yourself that the first appearance of Bishop will be worth something someday. The top one here is signed by Whilce Portacio but failed VSP.

#382 picks up with Jean in the mind of the Neo who took her memories. Cable sends Storm, Beast, and Gambit into the Astral Plane to help her, but they in turn are attacked by the Lost Souls on the cover. The Lost Souls force each of them to face their demons (the astral plane is good for self-reflection), and they are able to do so after Cable sends them a jolt of psychic energy. He could use some help too, as more Neo have arrived in the real world to attack them. Jean and the other three get out of their psychic battles and back into their bodies, along with the dying Neo that Jean was working on, and both sides call a truce. We finally hear that Gambit called the rest of them to Venice for a rescue mission.

#482 reminds us that you can't send X-Men into space without running into the Starjammers. The X-Men have gotten their ship's engines working enough to get them to where Xavier is being held, and they find the Starjammers there waiting. The jammers heard that Lilandra has been taken prisoner by Chancellor Araki and there are rumors that Deathbird is back as well. They have come to the transport ship that has Lilandra and probably has Xavier as well. Havok tells Corsair that his other son, Vulcan, is still alive, and Corsair adds him to the rescue list as well even if Vulcan is killing people left and right. The X-Men, Korvus, and the Starjammers storm the ship and start working on finding everyone. Darwin has sprung Xavier from his cell and is trying to get him to a ship. They go past a large area on the ship where a special High Council event is going on, and see Araki introduce the reason for the coup... D'Ken is awake again, with Vulcan and Deathbird behind him.

3rd series #18, Legacy #582. As the team flies back, Eva is indeed saying that Hijack should have a second chance, although the rest of the team seems ok with it being a one-strike-you're-out situation. When they arrive, though, they find Kitty and the young/original X-Men are missing. Evidence of a battle suggests that the Shi'Ar came for Jean Grey. The other half of the book is a flashback to Kitty being super-angry at Scott for killing Xavier, but moving past it, and the team adjusting to living with the original X-Men, which has all sorts of weirdness because of the young Jean and Scott coexisting with current Scott and Emma.

Day 83 starts with a reprint of #35. I don't know if I mentioned this on the #35 post, but this cover always reminds me of a caption from (I think) an old Wizard mag where it said "The X-Men do the watusi", or something like that. That is when I found out what the watusi is.

#183 is a favorite of Chris Claremont's, I think, because he seems to mention the bar fight between Juggernaut and Colossus a lot. Colossus breaks up with Kitty because he fell in love with someone during Secret Wars, even though she died. Wolverine thinks Kitty deserved better so he takes Colossus in to town and tells him he thinks Colossus was scared that things were getting serious. Logan smells that the Juggernaut is there, but doesn't notice who with (Selene!), and tries to leave. Colossus bumps into Juggy and spills his drink, along with scaring off his date, and the fight is on. Colossus ends up buried under the wrecked bar. Meanwhile, Val Cooper and (disguised) Mystique go to see Forge about some weapons for the mutant problem.

#283 continues the battle royale between the X-Men, Fitzroy and his gang from the future, and Bishop, Malcolm, and Randall. We also get the first appearance of the Gamesmaster, who is apparently the DM for the Upstarts. Bishop and his team are killing off the bad guys while Fitzroy escapes, but turns to fighting the X-Men because he doesn't think they're the real deal. While they fight, Xavier gets Jean's mind out of Emma and back into Jean's body. Fitzroy runs into Shinobi Shaw, who tells him that the Gamesmaster declared Fitzroy cheated and so Shaw is still leader of the Upstarts. Little do they know that the Gamesmaster and Selene have something in store for them. Fitzroy's base explodes, separating Bishop's team from the X-Men, and the X-Men leave frustrated with the mystery man.

#383 has a lot of first appearances for characters I've never heard of. Gambit needed the X-Men to help rescue someone in Russia, but they ran into trouble at Ransome Sole's club. The X-Men are captured but Storm escapes and asks an old friend, Simyon Kurasov, for help. Simyon distracts Sole with a Life Model Decoy of Storm while the actual Storm rescues Major Levin (their original goal) and starts battling a couple of the hired muscle. Sole, in the meantime, is auctioning off the X-Men to his guests, including Shockwave Riders from the Neo and a slaver named Tullamore Voge. One of the slaves helps the X-Men get loose and they fight everyone off but all the bad guys except for Voge escape.

#483 answers the question, why is Vulcan standing with D'Ken when he flew halfway across the galaxy to kill him? Well, Vulcan and Deathbird spent a little time traveling and fighting, and fell in love with each other over how evil they both are. They made it to where Chancellor Araki had D'Ken and heard about how the Shi'Ar telepaths had only ever failed at reviving him from his coma. Vulcan decided to try using his energy-channeling power to help physically reconnect the neurons in D'Ken's brain instead of doing psychic stuff, and it worked. As the four headed out into space, D'Ken told Vulcan that he wanted to repay him for waking him, and for him to marry his sister Deathbird.

3rd series #19, Legacy #583. This is one of Marvel's 'jumping in' issues, so we get some stage-setting. Maria Hill and SHIELD go to Hijack's apartment to get information on Cyclops, but he tells them he doesn't have any. Mystique is holding Dazzler captive, and we see that she's being used as the source of Mystique's Mutant Growth Hormone. Cyclops gets a ping for a strong new mutant in Chicago, but when the team gets there they are instead attacked by a Sentinel that releases smaller Sentinels. Magik tries to teleport them out but can't; Tempus has to use a time bubble and then Magik defeats the small Sentinels with a spell. The large one flies off and Cyclops guesses that it was blocking their powers but didn't know about Tempus or Magik's magic. Cyclops is convinced that either SHIELD is attacking them or someone is using SHIELD to attack them, and that means war.

#184 isn't the first appearance of Rachel Summers, but this is the issue where she comes to the current time. It's unclear how, but she thinks she's in the wrong timeline as she sees a new report of the X-Men and Magik is too old, Storm too punk, and Xavier too walking. Worse than that, Selene has felt her power and wants to make Rachel her apprentice. Rachel gets away for a time but Selene tracks her down and a fight begins; the X-Men intervene after seeing their signatures on Cerebro. We do get the actual first appearance of Forge, as Val Cooper and (disguised) Mystique go to get weapons for the government. It's also the first appearance of Forge's mentor Naze, who finishes an argument with Forge as Val and Mystique come in. Forge has prototypes of two things for the ladies, both based on ROM's weaponry: a power neutralizer and a mutant detector.

#284 has Sunfire helping some scientists investigate a giant crater on some islands between Russia and Japan. Sunfire blasts the crater to open a cap in it, but it turns into a void that shoots Sunfire back. The X-Men get a distress call and arrive just in time to save Sunfire from three aliens that came out of the void, although they have already killed all the scientists there. The X-Men attack the aliens with air support from Xavier and Forge in the Blackbird, but things take an odd turn when the aliens try to stop missiles from hitting the crater. Unfortunately, the missiles roughed up the aliens and gave the void enough energy to open again, pulling in the X-Men but not quite the Blackbird. Meanwhile, Bishop, Randall, and Malcolm are hunting down the criminals that Fitzroy brought back from the future, killing them since there is no other way.

#384 gamely tries to keep up the first appearance streak by introducing the Crimson Pirates. They kidnap a Russian defense minister so that they can get access to the facility where the X-Men have the slave trader Voge. There are some psychic shenanigans as Jean tries to probe Voge but is interrupted by Wolverine asking for help from her team; Voge takes the opportunity to try to turn Wolverine into a hound. Jean gets him out of the astral plane but a hidden villain attacks, and possessed Cable when he tries to help. The Crimson Pirates attack but are fought off by Gambit and Storm until they get ambushed by Cable. Beast and Phoenix have to escape as the Pirates free Voge and take Cable, Gambit, and Storm.

I'm mentioning this only because it's apparently the theme for the day, but #484 has the first appearance of some Shi'Ar dude, Major-General Ka'ardum. The X-Men and Starjammers fight their way through some Shi'Ar forces so that Lilandra can talk to him and try to recruit him to their cause. He had the support of the Shi'Ar armada and tried a military coup against Lilandra in the past; she says that he can regain his honor by joining their side now. On the other side we see that D'Ken, Vulcan and the rest have Xavier and Darwin captured. Hearing that Vulcan and Darwin were kind of friends, D'Ken leaves Darwin's fate to him. Vulcan asks Darwin to be his best man at the wedding to Deathbird but says that Xavier is going to die at the reception.

3rd series #20, Legacy #584. No named characters introduced in this one as far as I know. Maria is still trying to get info from Hijack when she learns that there was another Sentinel attack. Hijack tells her that they think SHIELD is behind it, so Maria pulls everyone back to the helicarrier to find Cyclops. Cyclops and the Cuckoos launch a psychic attack on Hill to see what she knows about the the Sentinels, which is nothing, and then knock out everyone on the bridge as a warning. In Madripoor, Blob finds the captive Dazzler but is soon followed by Mystique and Sabretooth. Blob is looking for his MGH fix, which Mystique is happy to give to him. She gets called back to SHIELD as Dazzler and leaves Blob to watch the real thing. Cyclops and the team think that maybe whoever is behind the Sentinels is using Cerebro technology, since they keep showing up where new mutants appear, and he thinks maybe Beast knows about it. Cyclops and Magik go to confront Beast and something makes Cyclops blast his old teammates. SHIELD finds Cyclops on satellite and Hill sends in the troops.

#185 has the start of a key plotline for Storm. Val Cooper has taken Forge's neutralizer prototype to Henry Gyrich, who is convinced government folks that they should try it out on Rogue. Mystique (disguised) barges in, angry that Gyrich has it and that they're thinking about using it, but is shut down. Storm is worried about Rogue because they haven't seen her for a while; Xavier uses Cerebro to track her to her old home in New Orleans. Storm goes and tries to comfort Rogue, including letting her borrow her powers. That's when Gyrich and the feds arrive, hitting Rogue with a low-level neutralizer blast. Rogue fights back, Storm wakes up, and Forge arrives thanks to a heads up from Mystique. But Gyrich turns the neutralizer to full power and shoots again, with Storm pushing Rogue out of the way. Forge pulls Storm from the nearby water but Rogue is washed away. Forge is outraged by Gyrich, but doesn't know that he'll also have trouble from the Dire Wraiths that are watching him.

#285 has a first appearance that just popped up again in the X books. The X-Men have been pulled through the void into a world at war, and mostly separated from each other. Jean and Colossus are found by rebels who think that Colossus is a savior who can close the portal. Archangel lands on the other side, with his wings taking possession of him and killing some rebels. The guard leader puts him in charge of her army for the final battle. Storm is found by someone else, who hears her story and smuggles her into the rebel base. That someone turns out to be Mikhail Rasputin, Colossus' brother!

#385 has split-team shenanigans. Cable, Gambit, Colossus, Psylocke, Storm, Archangel, and Thunderbird were captured by the Goth and the Crimson Pirates, and are playing along at helping them catch more slaves. They attack a dance club but in turn are attacked by Rogue, Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Beast, and Jean who followed the team's transponders. They have a big battle, which the 'bad guy' X-Men win because they aren't holding back as much. Going back with prisoners from the club, they find that Voge is in charge of everything. Fortunately, Jean was using a mental illusion to make it seem as if she was captured, and instead knocks Voge out. The team takes out the rest of the bad guys, including Rogue using Gambit's powers to kill the Goth. She feels bad about it even after Gambit says that it was his plan.

#485 has D'Ken heading to Vulcan and Deathbird's wedding, not even worried that Lilandra has swung part of the Shi'Ar army to her side. The wedding goes off without a hitch, in front of the M'Kraan crystal and with Xavier and Darwin chained up as witnesses. The X-Men and Starjammers attack promptly afterward, and Nightcrawler makes a run to save Xavier. Vulcan blasts him though, and throws Xavier into the crystal. Darwin goes in after him. Vulcan then turns and kills D'Ken, asking why he ever thought he would serve him. Vulcan takes the crown and anoints himself Emperor Vulcan.

3rd series #21, Legacy #585. We pick up right after the previous issue with Cyclops and Magik's powers misbehaving. Storm knocks them both out and Beast takes them to his lab to figure out what's going on. SHIELD arrives, and Mystique (playing as Dazzler) says that they've come for Cyclops. Maria Hill joins in but decides to give Beast an hour to figure out what happened. The mysterious person who's been observing both the X-Men and SHIELD decides this is their chance, and has the helicarrier fire on the school. The X-Men scramble to protect the students and attack the helicarrier, and Beast thinks he figures out who's behind it all. Meanwhile, Blob is strung out on Mutant Growth Hormone and accidentally leads Magneto to Dazzler. Seeing her, he angrily sends Blob away and unhooks Dazzler from the machines, promising to help her get revenge.

This was a really heartbreaking issue.

They'd really built up Storm's character and then de-powered her.

This arc really stuck with me...even 30 some odd years later.

Great cover, too.

#186 has perhaps the calmest Barry Windsor-Smith cover I can think of, since most of what I know from him comes from Weapon X.

Forge has taken in Storm, who understandably is struggling with the loss of her powers. She goes through some of the stage of grief and the two grow closer, until she overhears a call between Forge and Gyrich and learns that Forge invented the neutralizer. Then she moves to anger, especially when she finds out that he's a mutant, and leaves. Xavier, unable to find Storm with Cerebro, searches for Rogue instead. Rogue happens to be saving Val Cooper from the Dire Wraiths who want to replace her, as Rogue wants to find out what happened to Storm too.

#286 continues the X-Men's adventures in Mikhail's other world. They ask Mikhail to close the portal, which is still expanding across Earth, but he will not because of his previous experience. When he first came to this world he was attacked, and he attacked back but it killed thousands of people and his wife. The portal takes a backseat to war as Archangel is mind-controlled into leading the army against the rebels. Fortunately Jean is able to break the conditioning. When Colossus is injured, Mikhail finally uses his power and is able to close the portal with the X-Men's help. He gets the team and himself back to Earth.

#386 has some relatively unusual heroics for the team. After all the hubbub in Russia, Gambit takes the crew to New Orleans to relax. Unfortunately they get a distress call from Lee Forrester and her boat, which is caught in Hurricane Sam. Storm, Rogue, and Cable fly to help the ship but also have to help a transport plane as well. They save the airmen and decide to push Lee's ship into the eye of the hurricane. When they get there Rogue is pulled away by undertow but sees a vision of Cyclops and follows it back to the ship. Cable also has a vision of Cyclops. Storm says that it still isn't safe yet, so I guess we'll find out what that's about next issue.

Lilandra sets the ship to return to Earth and puts it on remote. When they land, Xavier realizes that he has his powers back thanks to the crystal, and Hepzibah realizes that she doesn't have a reason to be on the Starjammers if Corsair isn't there. 3rd series #22, Legacy #586. Magneto returns to the "school" with Dazzler, who is still suitably pissed. Hijack heads to the actual school where the team is still trying to protect the students and fight the uncontrolled helicarrier when Sentinels show up as well. Fortunately Hijack has the helicarrier attack the Sentinels and end the threat. Magik teleports the Uncanny squad to the school and everyone tracks down the mastermind in a SHIELD bunker. It's Dark Beast, who experimented on himself too much and orchestrated everything as a final attack on Cyclops. Maria Hill realizes that Mystique has been impersonating Dazzler and wants the real thing back on SHIELD, but Dazzler has had enough and is back to being an X-Men girl. SHIELD helps clean up the mansion.
