#178 continues the Brotherhood's attack on the X-Men. Kitty tells Xavier that Colossus was attacked and he sends help, but not Rogue so that her loyalty isn't tested. While the X-Men battle the Brotherhood, Kitty sneaks into the Fantastic Four's Baxter Building to get a device that might help with Colossus' being frozen. Also in the meantime, Xavier is attacked at the mansion by Mystique, who was pretending to be Rogue. The actual Rogue comes in and stops the attack and talks things out with Mystique. The X-Men have defeated the Brotherhood, but Mystique trades Xavier for letting them go. Destiny warns them about Kitty and the Baxter Building; they don't know but we see that Kitty tried to leave off the roof but something threw her off.

#278 has our first post-Lee artist, the return of Paul Smith. Xavier takes some of the X-Men to Muir Island to see what's going on but flies back to New York himself for... reasons? On Muir the mutants possessed by the Shadow King have been training by fighting in an arena, as we see with Rogue and Guido. Rogue's inner monologue after the fight lets us know that his control isn't absolute, but the Shadow King is keeping everyone on a leash. The training seems to be working as the possessed are able to take out the X-Men investigating the island. Back at the mansion, Xavier is seeing that everything is still destroyed from the battle with Mr. Sinister (at the end of Inferno, back in 243). A car drives up and crashes into the gates; Xavier rescues Stevie Hunter from the wreck. The Shadow King mentally pops in to gloat and show how the X-Men are defeated, and also preview that Colossus is in the car as well and ready to kill Xavier after he finishes with Stevie.

#378 picks the The Twelve storyline with a "Ages of Apocalypse" interlude (not to be confused with the Age of Apocalypse). It's basically a retelling of Jean joining the original X-Men except she knows things are wrong because the team members don't seem right (Storm and Gambit are there, for example), and they meet Magneto and his Brotherhood (also with a mismatched roster) in a bid to recruit Cable. Cyclops shows up, having merged with Apocalypse in a different issue, and attacks, causing everyone to remember what's really going on. Coming to back in Apocalypse's chamber, all the bad guys are gone. Xavier thinks that Cyclops is gone for good, but Jean doesn't accept it.

#478 starts getting us into some Shi'Ar intrigue. Vice chancellor K'Tor is informed of the stargates being destroyed and a Phoenix descendant being found. K'Tor goes to a prison world and promises a Shi'Ar named Korvus (his first appearance) his freedom if he can complete a task. The X-Men need to restock their spaceship so they stop at a space station they come across. Unfortunately the workers there turn out to be Warskrulls and attack them, but the X-Men win with their superior numbers. The team finds two surviving Shi'Ar workers and plan to take them to the next station they find. Unfortunately, we see that they recognize Xavier as Lilandra's former consort and plan to hand him over to the Vice-chancellor when they get a chance.

3rd series #14, Legacy #578. Finally out of the time travel shenanigans of Battle of the Atom, this issue focuses on new(ish) student Benjamin Deeds. Benjamin needs training, especially since Cyclops doesn't think his power is useful at all in combat (and it's unclear what his power is exactly). Emma realizes that he sort of becomes people near him, and there might be something chemical to his power as well. Emma and Magik take him to Atlantic City and try to give him a workout. After failing at hitting on a random woman, Benjamin settles in and is more successful with the next stretch of people. Emma next takes him to a SHIELD facility and tells him to give a letter to Timothy Dugan without raising any suspicions. He does, letting Dum Dum know that Cyclops isn't happy that someone in SHIELD is making Sentinels again. Back at the 'school', Cyclops is happy to see that Benjamin has a good use, although he still needs training. Emma suggests a codename of Morph but Benjamin isn't sold.

#179 tells us what happened to Kitty after her tumble off the Baxter Building. Storm and Wolverine go to identify a body in the morgue, but Wolverine knows it isn't Kitty. It was actually a fake made by the Morlock Masque. The Morlocks grabbed Kitty in revenge against Storm, planning to make her fulfill her promise to stay with Caliban by having them get married. Rogue, Wolverine, and Storm arrive just in time to stop the wedding and we get the first appearances of a couple of notable Morlocks, Leech and Healer. Kitty breaks up the fight so that the Morlocks will help Colossus, and Healer is able to do so. Kitty keeps her promise to return to the Morlocks the next day but Caliban lets her go, realizing that it would be better if she actually wanted to live underground.

Jim Lee has moved on to getting a writer's credit as we get to #279. Colossus chases Xavier and Stevie down into the mansion's underground levels where Xavier buys some time with the Danger Room. It doesn't last but he is able to psychically break the Shadow King's hold on Colossus. Going into Salem Center for help, they have to stop a Shadow King-driven mob from attacking a boy. Xavier realizes they need X-Factor's help. On Muir Island, the possessed mutants are having some kind of hunting training session. Wolverine is the only one who has some amount of control over himself, as everyone else seems fully bought-in to their Lord of the Flies situation. Forge butts in, putting some device on Wolverine's head and freeing him completely but also knocking him out. He has to blast Rogue with a 90's Forge gun though.

#379 picks up in the aftermath of The Twelve crossover, as Cyclops is apparently dead. Xavier has decided to go back into space with some mutant Skrulls. The team is relieving their stress with a game of baseball, as is tradition. On Genosha, Polaris has joined a weakened Magneto but is wondering if she made the wrong decision. They have to fight off both human rebels and Fabian Cortez trying to take leadership of the Acolytes. Iceman and Beast sneak into the country so that Beast can find research on the currently-dormant Legacy Virus. After the baseball game, the High Evolutionary shows up as a hologram and tells the X-Men that he has created an energy field that will block everyone's mutant gene. They are too powerful to have a fair evolutionary fight with humans, apparently. The Evolutionary turns it on and mutants across the globe revert into humans.

#479 gives us more backstory on the prisoner from last issue, Korvus Rook'shir, and introduces his Final Fantasy-esque sword, the Blade of the Phoenix. Vice-chancellor K'tor released Korvus and gave him his sword in exchange for killing Rachel, and he catches up to the X-Men's ship. He's able to defeat most of the team but when Rachel touches his sword, she and Korvus she each other's history thanks to the small bit of Phoenix Force in the Blade. She removes a bomb implanted in his head and they seem to have struck an agreement. Unfortunately, that's when Korvus' ship takes off and Xavier seems to be missing. We see that Darwin has grabbed on to the outside of the ship though, so presumably Xavier will have some help.

3rd series #15, Legacy #579. We see that Illyana has been traveling to the past to train with Doctor Strange. She comes back and is immediately snagged by Eva and the Cuckoos, who need her to take them shopping like normal people. Jean also wants in, so it's a girls' night out, but they need money, which means Emma. Emma is always down for shopping, though, and grabs Kitty to come along to London. The trip gets interrupted by the big letters on the front of the book, as Terrigen gas has spread across the earth. A crowd has gathered around a cocoon, which turns out to be a new Inhuman. The Inhuman doesn't like mutants and is put off by the Cuckoos poking around his mind, and lets off some blast that knocks out the X-Men and himself. An AIM team shows up, happy to be collecting Inhumans. When they wake up, Emma declares the end of the shopping trip.

#180 starts with Xavier not just walking, but playing a little basketball. His cloned body (thanks to the Brood thing) should have let him walk all along but something was holding him back, and he's finally worked through it. Everybody seems to have a case of being held back, as Colossus is worried about Kitty, Kitty is talking with Doug Ramsey about how Storm seems so different now, and an old couple finds Storm more frightening than the muggers she fights off for them. Doug has been invited to join the Massachusetts Academy, and with Emma Frost in a coma Kitty is thinking of joining him. Xavier says that's fine and (apparently) breaks the news to the team that he has mutant translation problems. When Doug and Kitty go to the plane, however, they're met by none other than the White Queen. Kitty tries to call Xavier telepathically, but the X-Men have been pulled off into some kind of Secret War.

#280 picks up with the Muir Island Saga again (and a quick pop-in by Jim Lee for the cover). A good chunk of the team has been captured by Legion, who is possessed by the Shadow King. Xavier arrives and tries to free Legion but the Shadow King retreats and sends the mutants he still controls to kill the rest. The two teams fight while Xavier fights the Shadow King on the Astral Plane, with a little help from Jean, and Legion attacks Xavier's body. In the end the Professor comes out on top and everyone is saved, but his back is broken again.

The saga would officially end in X-Factor 70, where the original X-Men leave and Val Cooper starts a new government team. The new line-up starts in X-Factor 71.

#380 picks up with the High Evolutionary having reverted all mutants into humans. Beast, having reviewed his research, found that the Evolutionary had worked with Mr. Sinister in the past, and the team thinks he probably has a hand in this. They take a handy spaceship up to find Sinister and the Evolutionary, passing his satellites on the way out. Once on the space station they have to fight the Evolutionary's New Men, under Sinister's control, and find that Sinister has imprisoned the Evolutionary in a giant tube. When Wolverine survives being blasted by Sinister, they realize that their powers work again since they're out past the satellites. The superhero carnage kicks in, Sinister escapes on the X-Men's ship, and the Evolutionary apologizes for trying to destroy mutantkind. He even gives them a ride back to Earth.

This issue came bagged with a preview of the Revolution line that came out the next month, with costume designs and whatnot. This one is still bagged

He gets a new one in prison from the Vice-chancellor, though. A guard comes and releases Vulcan, telling him that there is a secret order that wants the true Empire to rise again. The soldier leads Vulcan down a couple levels in the prison where a battle breaks open a different cell, and now Deathbird is free again.

3rd series #16, Legacy #580. Magneto has called SHIELD agent Dazzler (who we know is still Mystique) to try to get information about the Sentinels attacking the X-Men. She doesn't have any, but after some chatting she tells Magneto that a mutant group is rising in Madripoor, looking to turn it into a haven. Magneto heads there in disguise and sees that mutant kids are running around taking Mutant Growth Hormone. Magneto gives himself away in a bar fight and is found by the Blob, who takes him to the lady in charge: Dazzler, who reveals herself to be Mystique. She has actually been trying to build a place for mutants, along with Blob, (a new) Silver Samurai, and Sabretooth (which doesn't seem like the group to work on a safe space). They're inviting Magneto because in the past he did the same for them. Magneto flies into a rage over the MGH though, and attacks the group before leaving in Mystique's helicopter. Back at the 'school', Magneto's absence has been noted.

#181 has the X-Men reappear from Secret Wars with a giant dragon in tow, and in Japan instead of New York. Figuring out that they've been gone a week, Xavier sends Rogue to check on Kitty at the Massachusetts Academy since she can fly the fastest. Cyclops also seems to have been separated from the team, and pops up in Tahiti where Madelyne has been waiting for him. The team can't do much about the dragon though, even with Japan's disaster forces and Sunfire helping, besides try to save people from the carnage. One building comes down though, and Wolverine promises to watch after a dying woman's daughter, named Amiko. Finally Lockheed goes and has some kind of chat with the dragon, which then leaves and disappears. Lockheed is a one-woman kind of dragon, apparently. In DC, Senator Kelly tries to talk a colleague into supporting his Mutant Affairs Control Act.

#281 sets the stage for X-Men #1 kicking off. Emma Frost has invited the X-Men to the Hellfire Club to tell them about some mysterious attackers, who she thinks might be after the X-Men next. The might be the Upstarts, as we see that Shinobi Shaw is offering Trevor Fitzroy (his first appearance) some Sentinels. Fitzroy already has some of his own though, who are currently being tested out on the Reavers in Australia. They make quick work of most of the Reavers and are after Donald Pierce when he runs to Gateway and asks to be sent to whoever sent them. In New York, Emma finds a spy and is psychically torturing her, which starts a fight between the X-Men and her Hellions. Fitzroy, who is targeting Emma specifically, appears at the Hellfire Club and quickly kills Jetstream and Beef. The X-Men seem to get him under control when a portal opens and Pierce comes through, followed by three Sentinels. Between Fitzroy and the Sentinels it looks like Emma, Pierce, and most of the Hellions are killed, along with Jean Grey.

#381 takes place six months after 380. Gambit has called Jean, Beast, Storm, and Cable to Venice for a yet-undisclosed reason. Most of the issue is Jean talking with Cable about Cyclops (still dead, as far as we know) and life in general, but their family time is disrupted when they're attacked by part of a group called the Neo. The X-Men fight them off but one steals some memories of Scott from Jean's mind. They capture one Neo and Jean tries to get her memories back, but he seems to will himself to die. Cable gives us the exposition, if the Neo dies with Jean in his mind, Jean will die too!

The X-Men have to fix the engines on their ship before they can try to find Xavier or do anything else, and Korvus and Rachel seem to have some romance going on due to their shared Phoenix-ness. Speaking of Xaiver, those two Shi'Ar crewmembers deliver him to Vice-chancellor K'Tor, who starts in on the torture. Darwin is there but has to come up with a rescue plan.

3rd series #17, Legacy #581. Magik drops all the kids off at some unknown location for training. Despite being told not to use their cell phones, Hijack uses his to find their location. It turns out they're in Montana, in Tabula Rasa. They get attacked and/or frightened by various things there, and Eva accidentally time warps herself somewhen else. She reappears later, noticeably older; when Celeste Cuckoo reads her mind Eva makes her promise not to tell anyone. SHIELD shows up, having tracked Hijack's phone, and mostly wants Cyclops but will arrest the kids in the meantime. Magik reappears to teleport them out. Angry that Hijack disobeyed orders and gave away information on the team's powers, Cyclops fires Hijack.

If you want to know what happened to Eva while she was gone, you want the annual from this series. It came out almost a year after this issue, and is fairly heart-rending.

#182 picks up with Rogue, who Xavier sent to New York while the rest of the team was doing their thing in Japan. She gets to the mansion and checks the phone messages (what a time!), and X-Men buddy Michael Rossi is in trouble. She flies off immediately, missing that Kitty is also in trouble. Rossi has been infiltrating SHIELD looking for info on the Hellfire Club, but he was found out by an agent who is actually a Hellfire Club agent. Spy work is hard! Rogue arrives on the helicarrier as the mole and another agent are roughing up Rossi, and is able to save Rossi but the mole kills the other agent. Rogue flies Rossi out and is acting overly familiar when she realizes that Carol Danvers used to work (and, um, play) with Rossi. Rossi is disgusted to hear what Rogue did to Carol, and back on the helicarrier Nick Fury puts out an APB for Rogue.

#282 has the X-Men take Jean's body back to the mansion, where Xavier determines that she isn't dead but instead transferred her mind into Emma Frost's body. Forge is able to use information from a destroyed Sentinel to hone in on the Upstart's base, which turns out to be in the Arctic. Speaking of which, Fitzroy is there with Emma's body and claims control of the Upstarts from Shinobi Shaw. We meet Fitzroy's assistant (lackey?) Bantam, who helps keep track of what time portals Fitzroy has opening and when they should close out from lack of energy. Fitzroy kills another Hellion, Tarot, to open a new portal and bring some goons from the future to help him. Emma is next on his list but Jean wakes her up and fights off the guards with telekinesis, which they did not expect from Emma. The X-Men arrive and storm the base, causing Fitzroy to kill the rest of the Hellions to open a giant portal. As the X-Men fight the gang of bad guys that come through, three other men come through, looking suspiciously like the guys on the cover.

I feel like 282 is an easy one to pick up because it's rarely expensive and easy to convince yourself that the first appearance of Bishop will be worth something someday. The top one here is signed by Whilce Portacio but failed VSP.

#382 picks up with Jean in the mind of the Neo who took her memories. Cable sends Storm, Beast, and Gambit into the Astral Plane to help her, but they in turn are attacked by the Lost Souls on the cover. The Lost Souls force each of them to face their demons (the astral plane is good for self-reflection), and they are able to do so after Cable sends them a jolt of psychic energy. He could use some help too, as more Neo have arrived in the real world to attack them. Jean and the other three get out of their psychic battles and back into their bodies, along with the dying Neo that Jean was working on, and both sides call a truce. We finally hear that Gambit called the rest of them to Venice for a rescue mission.

#482 reminds us that you can't send X-Men into space without running into the Starjammers. The X-Men have gotten their ship's engines working enough to get them to where Xavier is being held, and they find the Starjammers there waiting. The jammers heard that Lilandra has been taken prisoner by Chancellor Araki and there are rumors that Deathbird is back as well. They have come to the transport ship that has Lilandra and probably has Xavier as well. Havok tells Corsair that his other son, Vulcan, is still alive, and Corsair adds him to the rescue list as well even if Vulcan is killing people left and right. The X-Men, Korvus, and the Starjammers storm the ship and start working on finding everyone. Darwin has sprung Xavier from his cell and is trying to get him to a ship. They go past a large area on the ship where a special High Council event is going on, and see Araki introduce the reason for the coup... D'Ken is awake again, with Vulcan and Deathbird behind him.

3rd series #18, Legacy #582. As the team flies back, Eva is indeed saying that Hijack should have a second chance, although the rest of the team seems ok with it being a one-strike-you're-out situation. When they arrive, though, they find Kitty and the young/original X-Men are missing. Evidence of a battle suggests that the Shi'Ar came for Jean Grey. The other half of the book is a flashback to Kitty being super-angry at Scott for killing Xavier, but moving past it, and the team adjusting to living with the original X-Men, which has all sorts of weirdness because of the young Jean and Scott coexisting with current Scott and Emma.
