#274 features fan-favorite Savage Land Rogue. She and Magneto are getting closer since he helped her end the fight with Carol Danvers but her powers aren't right; she can't absorb anything and she's only a little strong. This is bad because Zaladane and the Savage Land Mutates are up to stuff; Zaladane has built towers that put her in synch with the Earth's magnetic field and her power is causing trouble, like earthquakes in Argentina. Nick Fury and SHIELD have come, and Magneto and Rogue have teamed up with Ka-Zar, but they aren't having much success. Lila Cheney took the X-Men to Shi'Ar space where the danger to Xavier is apparently Deathbird, because she immediately captures them and demands that they kill Prof. X.

#374 has Colossus and Marrow in Mikhail's world. Marrow sees some replays of her life there, where Mikhail had people fight their way to the top of a hill to prove their worth. She realizes that she was giving away the good parts of herself for the approval of a madman. Mikhail wants to create a new Illyana and have Colossus provide her essence or soul, but they fight when Colossus refuses. During the fight something comes out of Mikhail, and Colossus realizes it must have been living in Mikhail and influencing him for a long time. He convinces Mikhail to come back with them and the three teleport back to Boston. In Egypt, Deathbird delivers the Monolith's sarcophagus to Apocalypse, fulfilling her end of some deal. Apocalypse apparently doesn't believe in deals because he blasts her and sends her off for conversion.

#474 wraps up the FourSaken story. Pulled to the First Fallen's world, in a place called the Singing City, Psylocke realizes that there are people from many worlds there but never more than four from a single one. Also, no one's powers work except for Psylocke. She psi-blades the First Fallen, which snaps some control in him. All the people are loose from the mind control that kept them in a blissful stupor and the X-Men have their powers again. The First Fallen also turns out to be a king from long ago who was possessed by something. Asking to die, the king is killed by one of the FourSaken but this allows the essence to regroup. Jamie Braddock sends everyone back home to fight the essence himself. While taking in the fact that Jamie sacrificed himself to save the world, the team gets a call from Storm, who needs help with a situation in Kenya.

3rd series #10, Legacy #574. The new kids are training on their non-powered fighting, with Eva and Magik sparring. Eva accidentally puts Magik in a time bubble, showing that she can apparently move people in time, not just freeze it. Magneto leaves to meet with Maria Hill, who is upset that he hasn't given up Cyclops yet, or warned them when the X-Men attacked the helicarrier. Now if Magneto wants to talk to SHIELD, he has to go through Dazzler (who, we know, is actually Mystique). On the news, the team sees that people in Ann Arbor are having a pro-mutant rally. They decide to go say hi, and Cyclops begins to talk to the crowd when a Sentinel shows up and starts acting all terminate-y.

#175 pulls the old bait-and-switch as the team thinks that Dark Phoenix has returned. Instead it's Mastermind making them think that Cyclops is the Phoenix, so he's pretty close to getting his head handed to him. Scott manages to stay one step ahead and draws the team into the Danger Room where he's able to pick them off. He has Rogue take Xavier's powers so that she can see who he really is and tell the others, and Storm uses her wind to literally flush out Mastermind. Scott says a final goodbye at Jean's grave and marries Madelyne.

#275 continues the anniversary issue goods with a gatefold wrap-around cover. In the Savage Land, Zaladane uses a machine to try to add Magneto's powers to her own but Rogue, Nick Fury, and Ka-Zar are able to stop it. Instead, Rogue's powers finally come back to full and Magneto uses the machine to take Zaladane's powers. Zaladane is defeated and Magneto kills her before leaving. Rogue realizes maybe she isn't all that into him. In space, the X-Men get free and Wolverine fights Deathbird while the rest of the team joins with the Starjammers to fight the Imperial Guard. The good guys win, Lilandra retakes the throne, and they even find Xavier again (he goes into space in 200). It isn't all smiles and sunshine though, as Psylocke is knocked out by an unseen assailant, and Jubilee and Gambit (while sneaking around the ship) see Xavier take control of Gladiator and Oracle to order the deaths of Deathbird and the X-Men.

#375 continues the anniversary goodies and crosses over with the X-Men series. Members of the team, including Cable and X-Man, start getting calls to return to the mansion. When they get there, they find Xavier with Wolverine's body; Xavier immediately blames Cyclops. They argue and it turns nasty quickly, with Xavier attacking Jean and Cyclops blasting Storm when Kitty phases Xavier out of the way. The factions get separated and everyone tries to figure out what's going on, ranging from Marrow's experience with Skrull technology to Cable's technovirus. The battle rejoins and teammates kill teammates before it suddenly ends; Xavier has been testing them to see that they're all who they say they are (Professor Xavier is a jerk!). He and Beast reveal that Wolverine is actually a Skrull, who must have taken Logan's place back on the Skrull planet. So where's Wolverine?

#475 starts the Rise and Fall of the Shi'Ar Empire arc. Xavier is trying to reach the Shi'Ar but can't, which is probably bad news given that this happens recently after the Deadly Genesis miniseries that introduced Vulcan. Scott and Havok's unknown brother has some serious beef with the Shi'Ar. Xavier assembles a team of Nightcrawler, Warpath, Marvel Girl, and Havok, but tells them they also need Polaris. They have to rescue her from some anti-Apocalypse cult in Egypt. Coming back to the mansion, Xavier tells them that they're going to stop Vulcan from taking his revenge, but first they need a spaceship.

3rd series #11, Legacy #575. Not an anniversary issue because of the stupid renumbering. The team fights against the Sentinel in Ann Arbor, which gives Cyclops some time to internal monologue about how impressed he is with everyone's effort even though they're either new or have their powers broken. Illyana grabs Magneto and he finishes the Sentinel but it disappears before they can figure out who sent it or where it came from. We also get a peek at Maria Hill trying to call Dazzler but Dazzler doesn't respond, because she's really Mystique and watching a meeting between Hydra and the Hand in Madripoor.

#176 touches on a lot of fronts. Wolverine goes back to Japan because Mariko sent him the clan honor sword; however, she still won't marry him because she needs to clean up her family's issues. While under Mastermind's control, she linked the clan to the Yakuza. Giving us the cover, Cyclops and Madelyne's plane goes down in a storm and they have to fight off a very hungry squid. In DC, we have the first appearance of Valerie Cooper as an agent who wants more supervision of mutants. And in the Morlock Tunnels, Caliban tells Callisto that Kitty promised to stay with him, and she aims to make Kitty keep that promise.

#276 picks right up from Gambit and Jubilee overhearing Xavier's nefarious plans. They attack and find Lila Cheney tied up; Gambit frees her and she teleports away with Deathbird. Jubilee is captured but Gambit gets away. Everyone else hears the fighting and comes running; Gladiator and Xavier say that Lila and Deathbird got away but don't mention Jubilee. Wolverine smells something fishy though, and gives Xavier the three claw monte. Psylocke knocks Wolverine out, but Lila and Deathbird return and teleport the rest of the X-Men away. They show the team that Lilandra and Xavier have been wiping out entire planets of Shi'Ar. We see, back at the palace, that the Starjammers, Psylocke, and Xavier are actually Warskrulls, and with a new Skrull taking the dead Xavier-Skrull's place, they still control Lilandra and thus the throne. The Skrull-jammers move to attack the X-Men.

#376 follows on a previous issue where Kitty found one of Destiny's diaries. It mentions something called 'The Twelve', and here Xavier calls the team together to go over what it says. Speaking of Skrulls, they're interrupted when Xavier realizes there's another mind in the room, apparently a Skrull named Fiz. The Skrulls apparently also know of some plan for The Twelve. We finally get to the good part, where Xavier reads the names from the diary: himself, Cyclops, Phoenix, Storm, Iceman, Sunfire, Polaris, Cable, Bishop, Mikhail, and the Living Monolith. Apparently only Cyclops and Phoenix can count, because later they ask Xavier who the last name was, and it's Magneto, who Xavier wants to contact directly. In Egypt, the Monolith is resurrected but is now controlled by Mr. Sinister, using a crystal from Havok's costume.

#476 has Xavier's team getting that spaceship. They recruit Darwin first, as they might need Vulcan's friend, then go to a volcano in upstate New York (they have those, right?). It's a hidden Shi'Ar base and, after taking out some Shi'Ar slaves left as guards, they have a ship. They fly through the first stargate on the way to Shi'Ar space but find that the others have been destroyed; Vulcan has apparently stranded them in space.

He worked on other X books, including 469-471 earlier in Uncanny, but this is our first long look at Billy Tan. I liked the art in this arc.

3rd series #12, Legacy #576. We get the downside of big crossovers here, where Uncanny suddenly jumps into part 4 of the Battle of the Atom arc. Some future X-Men have come back to the present to assert that the Original Five X-Men need to go back to their time in the past (time travel is tough). OF Cyclops and OF Jean run off, thinking that something is wrong. In this issue, they ask current Cyclops and his team for help. Cyclops agrees over Emma's misgivings, but Magik acts oddly and heads off. Emma gives up their location to the other X-Men squad and the future X-Men, and future Jean (under the name Xorn) attacks. Emma realizes her mistake and is able to fight off future Jean with the help of the Cuckoos and OF Jean. On the helicarrier, Maria Hill is seeing all their time sensors go off and complains about Henry McCoy. He just does whatever he wants. Maria Hill is not wrong.

#177 shows us that when villains need to train, their Danger Room is Murderworld. Mystique is practicing against some X-Men robots as she wants to get Rogue back. She can't bring herself to kill "Nightcrawler" though. Coincidentally, Nightcrawler is talking about his origins and similarity to Mystique with Amanda Sefton. He'd like to talk to his foster mother, Margali, about it. The two are on their way to a concert with Kitty and Colossus when the latter see a burning building. Telling Kitty to call for help, Colossus runs in but finds that it's a trap by the Brotherhood, who freeze him with liquid nitrogen.

#277 is a sad issue for me as it marks the end of Jim Lee's run on Uncanny. However, his style lives on in the series (and, of course, he picked up drawing X-Men). The X-Men fight the Skrull-jammers, and after Deathbird and Lila find the chamber with the captured folks, they take the battle there. The battle with the Skrull Gladiator, Wolverine, Psylocke, and Jubilee seems to go ok until Skrull Xavier starts using his telepathy. Fortunately, real Xavier gets free and is better than the copy. Filling Xavier in on everything he missed, including how people are acting weird on Muir Island, he guesses that the Shadow King has returned. Speaking of which, Stevie Hunter is attacked by Colossus, who apparently is one of the many that Farouk has possessed.

#377 continues the The Twelve arc from its crossover in other series. Some folks have already been captured in Egypt, so the team flies in to the rescue. Confronted by Apocalypse minions as well as Skrulls, however, the remaining members of The Twelve are captured and teleported away. We find out that Apocalypse's plan is to funnel all their energy through the Living Monolith and into Nate Grey, who will be his new host body. As if that isn't bad enough, some of the team back in New York (why didn't they leave the people on the list??) finds out that someone is accessing and downloading their files, including the Xavier Protocols. Kitty traces the hacker to nearby and Archangel, Wolverine, Psylocke, Nightcrawler, and Jubilee join her to check it out.

#477 gives us Vulcan's side of the story. Flying through space to get to the Shi'Ar and his revenge on D'Ken, he destroys a star cruiser. A lucky (?) survivor tells him that he will need a Shi'Ar ship to go through the star gates, and that Lilandra is Empress now, not D'Ken. Vulcan finds three warships and destroys two, getting the obviously outclassed third one to surrender to him. As they go through star gates he destroys them so he can't be followed. Arriving in Shi'Ar space, the ship is confronted by Gladiator and a couple other members of the Imperial Guard.

3rd series #13, Legacy #577. Continuing the Battle of the Atom crossover, now there are even more future X-Men involved. At least these are good future X-Men. Even so, the bad future X-Men finish kidnapping the past X-Men and get them to a time cube in the mansion. For some reason, though, they can't send them back in time. The machine works, but the original X-Men can't be sent to where they belong. They don't get much of a chance to think about why as the current (Cyclops team) X-Men show up to continue the fight.

#178 continues the Brotherhood's attack on the X-Men. Kitty tells Xavier that Colossus was attacked and he sends help, but not Rogue so that her loyalty isn't tested. While the X-Men battle the Brotherhood, Kitty sneaks into the Fantastic Four's Baxter Building to get a device that might help with Colossus' being frozen. Also in the meantime, Xavier is attacked at the mansion by Mystique, who was pretending to be Rogue. The actual Rogue comes in and stops the attack and talks things out with Mystique. The X-Men have defeated the Brotherhood, but Mystique trades Xavier for letting them go. Destiny warns them about Kitty and the Baxter Building; they don't know but we see that Kitty tried to leave off the roof but something threw her off.

#278 has our first post-Lee artist, the return of Paul Smith. Xavier takes some of the X-Men to Muir Island to see what's going on but flies back to New York himself for... reasons? On Muir the mutants possessed by the Shadow King have been training by fighting in an arena, as we see with Rogue and Guido. Rogue's inner monologue after the fight lets us know that his control isn't absolute, but the Shadow King is keeping everyone on a leash. The training seems to be working as the possessed are able to take out the X-Men investigating the island. Back at the mansion, Xavier is seeing that everything is still destroyed from the battle with Mr. Sinister (at the end of Inferno, back in 243). A car drives up and crashes into the gates; Xavier rescues Stevie Hunter from the wreck. The Shadow King mentally pops in to gloat and show how the X-Men are defeated, and also preview that Colossus is in the car as well and ready to kill Xavier after he finishes with Stevie.

#378 picks the The Twelve storyline with a "Ages of Apocalypse" interlude (not to be confused with the Age of Apocalypse). It's basically a retelling of Jean joining the original X-Men except she knows things are wrong because the team members don't seem right (Storm and Gambit are there, for example), and they meet Magneto and his Brotherhood (also with a mismatched roster) in a bid to recruit Cable. Cyclops shows up, having merged with Apocalypse in a different issue, and attacks, causing everyone to remember what's really going on. Coming to back in Apocalypse's chamber, all the bad guys are gone. Xavier thinks that Cyclops is gone for good, but Jean doesn't accept it.

#478 starts getting us into some Shi'Ar intrigue. Vice chancellor K'Tor is informed of the stargates being destroyed and a Phoenix descendant being found. K'Tor goes to a prison world and promises a Shi'Ar named Korvus (his first appearance) his freedom if he can complete a task. The X-Men need to restock their spaceship so they stop at a space station they come across. Unfortunately the workers there turn out to be Warskrulls and attack them, but the X-Men win with their superior numbers. The team finds two surviving Shi'Ar workers and plan to take them to the next station they find. Unfortunately, we see that they recognize Xavier as Lilandra's former consort and plan to hand him over to the Vice-chancellor when they get a chance.

3rd series #14, Legacy #578. Finally out of the time travel shenanigans of Battle of the Atom, this issue focuses on new(ish) student Benjamin Deeds. Benjamin needs training, especially since Cyclops doesn't think his power is useful at all in combat (and it's unclear what his power is exactly). Emma realizes that he sort of becomes people near him, and there might be something chemical to his power as well. Emma and Magik take him to Atlantic City and try to give him a workout. After failing at hitting on a random woman, Benjamin settles in and is more successful with the next stretch of people. Emma next takes him to a SHIELD facility and tells him to give a letter to Timothy Dugan without raising any suspicions. He does, letting Dum Dum know that Cyclops isn't happy that someone in SHIELD is making Sentinels again. Back at the 'school', Cyclops is happy to see that Benjamin has a good use, although he still needs training. Emma suggests a codename of Morph but Benjamin isn't sold.
