#167 has the team back on Earth as they launch a sneak-attack on Prof. X and the New Mutants. Kitty finds Xavier and thinks that they beat the embryo taking over, but it was a ploy as he becomes a new Brood Queen. During the fight Cyclops realizes that Xavier is still in there, though, and so the team decides to make a clone body and transfer his mind into it (maybe in an early inspiration for the current state of the X-Men universe). That works, but Xavier still can't walk because his mind psychosomatically won't let his legs work. Gladiator shows up with some bad news though; Deathbird has taken Lilandra's throne while she's been on Earth, and Reed Richards saved Galactus' life. Xavier decides to send Kitty down to the New Mutants, leading to a well-known (and accurate) splash page in the next issue.

#267 has Storm and Gambit chased down to New Orleans after separate attacks by the Shadow King's goons and Nanny and Orphan-Maker. They decide to work as partners but Gambit gets captured by Nanny and Orphan-Maker. Storm sneaks on the ship and finally remembers what happened - when the two captured her back in 248 they swapped her into the child's body and wiped her memories while Havok killed a Life Model Decoy. Enraged, Storm goes on the attack and crashes the ship with only her and Gambit seeming to survive. Storm is still happy to be partners but tells Gambit about some folks called the X-Men.

#367 continues the Magneto War. In the intervening X-Men issue we learned more about Joseph's past, and Russia tried to nuke Magneto but he blew them up before they reached him - but closer to the X-Men in the Arctic. Xavier used his powers to have the Acolytes protect the team from the nuclear attack, and then has them attack the X-Men so that their ship will be unprotected. The X-Men take out the Acolytes and take their ship. They're too late to get to Magneto though, as Joseph and Astra found him first. Astra destroys the amplifier that Magneto is using to threaten the magnetosphere, causing him to absorb all the energy and nearly kill Astra. That's when Joseph jumps in on the fight.

#467 has a cover that I believe was reprinted on a different issue and released with an action figure. It also has the first appearance of the Shi'Ar Death Commandos, who were responsible for killing Rachel's grandfather last issue. They continue killing the Grey family, even after Rachel calls for help and Nightcrawler brings Psylocke and Kitty. The commandos take everyone out and pour something on Rachel's back that burns the Phoenix symbol into her skin, making her traceable forever.

3rd series #3, Legacy #567. The Avengers have come to rearrest Cyclops and everyone has a discussion about who exactly was responsible for what during Avengers vs X-Men. Just before the battle can start, Eva stops time for the Avengers. The X-Men teleport back to base and confront Magneto, who obviously sold them out, and hear that he's acting as a double agent to get SHIELD's trust. The teachers head to the Jean Grey School (the mansion, headed by Wolverine) to try to recruit more students.

#168 tells us what everyone already knows, that Professor Xavier is a jerk! It also has the first appearance of Madelyne Pryor. Convinced by Stevie Hunter to show her worth instead of complain, Kitty notices an anomaly in the maintenance tunnels and finds the little dragon from Broodworld. She also finds three Sidri hunters, apparently left over from #154. She and Lockheed (now named) are able to defeat two of them even after they neutralize her phasing power, and Colossus shows up to take out the third. Xavier lets her stay on the team on a probationary status. The rest of the team is refocusing; Wolverine has gone on one of his Canadian trips, Storm is communing with the Earth but has some power hiccups, Xavier is getting ready for Lilandra to leave, Nightcrawler goes on a date with Amanda Sefton, and Cyclops goes to Florida to see Lee Forrester. There, he meets her new pilot, a woman who looks just like Jean Grey.

#268 has a fairly classic Jim Lee cover and a flashback to WWII. In Madripoor '41, Captain America is helping someone attacked by Hand ninjas, and they both get bailed out when Logan comes to show his distaste for the Hand. He takes them to his local bar, Seraph's (run by Seraph, in her first appearance), and hears from the Russian that the Hand and Nazis are working together and have kidnapped a kid he's looking after - Natasha Romanoff. They go rescue Natasha but it looks like Logan is shot and killed. Fortunately he isn't, because he has to save everyone again later. In the current day, Natasha (now the Black Widow) is back in Madripoor to learn about a meeting between Matsu'o and Fenris and has to be saved by Wolvie, Psylocke, and Jubilee.

#368 is post-Magneto War. In the last issue (in X-Men 87) Joseph fixed the magnetic problems that Magneto caused, which aged him and then converted him into magnetic energy that joined the magnetosphere (comics!). The X-Men battle Magneto to a draw when the United Nations envoy shows up and says that they're giving Magneto the island of Genosha. Xavier has to knock Wolverine out because he's so pissed. Mysteriously, in the aftermath, Magneto's powers seem to have given out.

In this issue, Wolverine is going through Danger Room exercise after exercise trying to kill Magneto. The rest of the team has a funeral for Joseph. Then, an alien shows up and takes everyone to another dimension. Comics!

#468 has the Shi'Ar Death Commandos finish eliminating the Grey family, but not Rachel thanks to the other X-Men showing up and ending the fight. Rachel takes Cyclops to the astral plane so he can say goodbye to the family as they go to join Jean. Rachel understandably swears vengeance.

3rd series #4, Legacy #568. Cyclops and Emma are at the Jean Grey school to see who they can convince to join their squad. They get the young Angel (from when the original X-Men were pulled forward in time) and the three Stepford Cuckoos. Their existing students, back at the base, accidentally play in the Danger Room. We see that Magik also seems to be having issues with her powers, getting accidentally pulled into Limbo and then coming back.

I love 268. I
Growing up, that was the X-Men book all the kids were in love with. I have multiples of this book. Surprisingly enough, I don't have a direct 9.8 but I managed to get a 9.8 on the newsstand copy I picked up a while back. It's one of those issues I buy when I see nice copies at the shop.

#169 is the first appearance of the Morlocks, who kidnap Angel and nearly kill his girlfriend Candy Southern. Candy manages a call to the X-Men who follow the trail into the subway tunnels but then are attacked by some non-so-attractive mutants. Their leader, Callisto, wants Angel as her mate. Kitty, separated by the team and made sick by Plague, is found by Caliban (who had kidnapped her previously). Caliban can't help her but hopes to get help from Callisto so that Kitty will stay with him. Meanwhile, checking in on the Hellfire Club, Tessa (Sage) tells Sebastian Shaw that Emma Frost mysteriously fell into a coma.

#269 is a Rogue-centric story. She finally pops out of the Seige Perilous (she went through with the Master Mold back in 247) back in Australia. She doesn't have amnesia like some of the other X-Men had but has lost her Ms. Marvel powers. Unfortunately, the Reavers have taken the base back; fortunately, Carol Danvers is also there to help fight them. Rogue runs to Gateway and takes his powers, teleporting herself to the Savage Land and accidentally sending Carol to Muir Island. Bad news for Carol, the Shadow King has taken over Legion, Moira, and Amanda Sefton; he then takes her over as well. Realizing that Carol and Rogue's strength is linked, Carol flies down to the Savage Land, basically decomposing, to try to kill Rogue and get back to full power. Their fight gets broken up and when Rogue wakes up, she finds that Magneto ended it in her favor.

#369 sounds weird all the way around. The X-Men, transported to an alien dimension, have to stop a Juggernaut who's crashing between different dimensions. Storm is having a dream to keep her busy, and Xavier and Wolverine are sharing a body. The duo get Cain to stop doing whatever the Juggernaut is doing, and when it causes a tear in space-time Storm is able to fix it. The team gets sent back to what looks like New York but is definitely not New York, according to Wolverine's senses and the two moons in the sky.

#469 is a table-setting issue. Somebody hacks ONE's monitors and transmits a video asking if the X-Men are even around to protect former mutants any more. Thinking that Husk might be involved because she knows about computers, ONE takes hers. She and Cannonball later decide to turn up the heat on Colonel Reyes, the ONE commander. Doc Samson comes to talk to Rachel and has their session monitored as well; when he finds out he is none too pleased with ONE and tells them that keeping the X-Men as prisoners in their own home is not going to go well. Rachel sneaks out of the mansion.

3rd series #5, Legacy #569. With this cover by Frazer Irving, and the 300s and 400s switching to Kubert and Tan, we've moved away from Bachalo-mania. Cyclops has put out a call for new recruits and warned the world to stay out of their way. There's some bravado going on though, as we find out what happened when Magik had her power hiccup last issue. She was pulled into Limbo by Dormammu, who was looking to take over since her powers were on the fritz. Magik turns into Darkchylde to fight him off but realizes that with her broken powers being related to magic, things could be in bad shape. The team does some introductions with their new members, as young Angel realizes maybe he shouldn't have joined a team partially run by Magneto, but Magik loses control of herself again and teleports everyone to Limbo.

A nice run of Paul Smith covers!

That solo kitty cover has always been a favorite.

It always made sense to me that Kitty would get sent to the New Mutants.

She was the same age as the rest of them.

@Jabberwookie Yeah, sort of makes sense from an age perspective but less of a power control/capability perspective. New Mutants was only around issue 3, I think, at that point? Those kids had been heroes for like a week! I probably would've been pissed if I were Kitty.

That's a fair point.

Granted, I was a teen in those days, so as much as I liked Kitty, I wanted her on the team I would be on if I had real super powers, rather than my ability to make a red light turn green by staring at it long enough.

Still, loving this thread. I might do a "tour" through my Avengers just for the heck of it.

Day 70 starts with reprints of #17 and 18. I guess for #69 they went with 16 to finish the Sentinel arc from #68 but then put it with #19 as more of a solo story. 17 and 18 go together as a Magneto story.

#170 follows up on the Morlocks. The X-Men break free to interrupt Callisto and Angel's 'wedding' but Plague puts things back in place by making Storm sick. Callisto refuses to help Caliban with Kitty being sick, so he tells the X-Men that the only thing to do is challenge for Morlock leadership. Nightcrawler is ready to do it but Storm takes the honor. Storm puts a knife in Callisto's chest and the X-Men walk out after offering the Morlocks a place at the school. Up in Alaska, Cyclops and Madelyne have moved directly to the "tell all about yourself" portion of the relationship, with Scott telling her about Jean and how he his a mutant. Madelyne seems to be in it for the long haul after a few weeks of knowing each other and a single date. Elsewhere, Rogue has run away from Mystique and Destiny's place.

#270 starts the X-Tinction Agenda crossover. Since it goes across a few different series I won't try to recap it as much as I did for some of the others. Storm and Gambit make it to the (still destroyed) mansion where Storm goes through some tests for her de-aged body. The New Mutants, staying underground with most everyone else, are chafing at the small space and the X-Men letting them think they had died. Things go by the wayside when Genoshan Magistrates, including an amnesic Havok, attack. Storm seals the tunnels to keep them out of the complex but it leaves her, Boom-Boom, Rictor, Wolfsbane, and Warlock to be captured. Banshee, Forge, Gambit, and the rest of the New Mutants are left to figure out what happened. As if that isn't enough, Lila Cheney teleports back from space to tell Dazzler (still in Cali) that Xavier is in danger.

#370 has the X-Men realize that when they left the other dimension they not only ended up on a Skrull planet, they ended up on a Skrull moon in the past - right before Galactus eats the homeworld. They try to get word out but the Skrulls think it's a trap, so they start attacking in the shapes of the Starjammers and Imperial Guard (hence the cover, I guess). Gambit also has to fight off Skrulls as he tries to find a doctor for Marrow, who was injured in the other-dimension shenanigans. Time shows the X-Men to be right as Nova shows up and starts destroying Skrull ships to prepare for Galactus' arrival.

#470 follows on Rachel sneaking out of the mansion. She's gone to Chicago to see a psychiatrist that Kitty recommended to talk about the Shi'Ar killing her family. Bishop gets actual permission to leave the mansion (should you have to ask permission to leave a place if you're just "under protection"?) to make sure the Death Commandos are still locked up. He meets X-acquaintance Detective Charlotte Jones and they get to the facility just in time to see that the commandos have gotten loose. They fight but the commandos grab Jones and teleport to Chicago. Nightcrawler is basically already there to pick Bishop up in the Blackbird because Val Cooper realized that Rachel was gone. In Chicago, just as Rachel realizes how angry she is at the Shi'Ar, the commandos show up to attack her.

3rd series #6, Legacy #570. Dormammu has pulled everyone into Limbo and takes control of Magik while Mindless Ones attack the rest of the team. Things look bad until Emma has the three Cuckoos make the new kids feel extra brave, and they turn the tide to an even fight. Elsewhere, Maria Hill interviews Dazzler about being an agent of SHIELD in their new mutant response team. Elsewhere elsewhere, we meet a new mutant who can control vehicles, or at least his girlfriend's car.

#171 is well-known for having Rogue join the team, but it also features Magik's first generation of her soul sword. Rogue comes to the mansion asking for help with her powers and having Carol Danvers' personality in her head. The X-Men are understandably pissed so Xavier sends them to the Danger Room to burn off some steam; Illyana uses a Limbo simulation which sets her off and leads to her generating the sword. Xavier decides to let Rogue join the school and the team, which goes over worse when Binary Carol shows up. Everyone eventually settles down after Xavier reminds them of the purpose of the school, except for Storm (new leader of the Morlocks, lest we forget). In Alaska, Cyclops finds out that Madelyne was the sole survivor of a plane crash that happened the day Jean died.
