Day 63 makes it pretty clear who the Creator is. Angel goes to fight his teammates and Ka-Zar, but gets set straight pretty quickly when the Mutates show up to kill them all. The X-Men handle business and storm the castle but are stopped by Magneto's newest Mutate, Lorelei (side note: Magneto created the Mutates with some machine, pointing out to me that he was really a gadget guy in the original run). Her voice hypnotizes all the men but has no effect on Jean; Jean fights off Magneto and telekinetically opens Cyclops' visor to destroy the machinery. The Mutates revert back to their original forms and Magneto appears to have died for the fourth or fifth time in the first 60ish issues.

#163 has Wolverine sneak back in and find that the Brood are doing some kind of experiments on Carol Danvers. He offs the Brood and saves Carol; they meet up with Cyclops and Storm, who freed themselves from their trances after having horrible nightmares that the team was attacked by the Brood. They free the rest of the squad and make it back to Lilandra's ship. Back on Earth, the X-Men's friends make some guesses at what happened and the Starjammers head out to find Broodworld. We're getting close to Xavier starting the New Mutants.

#263 has Forge battling Vietnam flashbacks as he tries to get Jean and Banshee out of the Morlock tunnels. They run into Colossus and Callisto, also being hunted by Masque, and Colossus turns into metal again when Masque tries to stab him. Forge gets everyone out and is even able to reverse Jean and Banshee's transformations. All's well that ends well.

#363 picks up the Hunt for Xavier story after the X-Men title took a turn. In that one, some of the team went to check out one of the Xavier Cerebro signals. They met a psychic girl who told them that Cerebro has come for Xavier. Here, the rest of the team is after the other signal in San Francisco. It turns out that Xavier is there, powerless, but has gathered a new Brotherhood (Blob, Post, Mimic, and Toad) to fight a common foe. That foe would be Cerebro, who gained sentience thanks to Bastion.

#463 continues the House of M shenanigans of Captain Britain. He has a dream of being told to hurry and then the world being destroyed, and the next day attacks a woman that he thinks is Saturnyne. His attack is stopped, fortunately, because she is not. Along with Psylocke and Rachel they find the Marauders arresting Juggernaut, thought to be a renegade mutant. Tracking down a second renegade they find Nocturne.

2nd series #19, Legacy #563. Having gone full Dark Phoenix, Cyclops killed Xavier in the main Avengers vs. X-Men series. Here, we get some of Cyclops' internal dialogue and maybe a brief brush with the spirit of Jean Grey before the Phoenix leaves Cyclops and goes into Hope. With Scarlet Witch's help, Hope is able to clean up most of the worldwide mess, dismiss the Phoenix, and coincidentally reboot mutantcy (mutanity?). When Beast accidentally mentions there are new mutants while dressing down Cyclops afterward, Cyclops says he'll happily pay for his crimes but would do it all again.

Day 64 starts with a semi-key (I guess? I would say so...) first appearance, Shiro Yoshida, Sunfire. Sunfire's mom was irradiated by the atomic blast at Hiroshima then died when Shiro was born; his powers activated when his uncle took him to the city. His uncle then passed on his nationalist beliefs and raised Shiro to avenge his country. His father, a delegate to the United Nations, uncle, and Shiro come to New York for his father to present a peace statue. In costume, Shiro destroys the statue and is then run off by the X-Men, who saw a signal on Cerebro. Sunfire plans to melt the dome of the Capital but his father finds out his plan and who he is and literally stands in Shiro's way after the X-Men are defeated. Shiro's father shoots his own brother; Sunfire kills his uncle and flies to his father's side. He tells Shiro to live for the future and to bring peace before dying. The X-Men leave with Shiro in police custody.

#164 has the Brood trying to recapture the X-Men in space. Storm's powers are on the fritz to the point where she accidentally destroys a Brood ship and refuses to fight in case she kills anyone else. Whatever the Brood did to Carol kicks in as she suddenly has access to the energy of a 'white hole' and becomes Binary, then destroys the Brood fleet. Kitty mysteriously recovers from an injury; Storm realizes that something is alive inside her and runs off on a smaller ship. Wolverine finally breaks the news to the team about the Brood embryos.

I like this cover.

#264 starts in DC with Genoshan Magistrates chasing Forge. They run into Angel's policewoman girlfriend, Charlotte Jones, and her partner. The Magistrates kill the partner and continue after Forge and Jones, but they are able to take out some of the Magistrates and tie up the rest. The more powered part of the Genoshan contingent attacks X-Factor at their base, Ship, where Banshee, Colossus (still amnesic), Callisto, and the Genoshan runaways Phil Moreau and Jennifer Ransome are staying. They capture everyone except for Beast, who then turns the tables with an assist from Forge and Jones. Of course, the Genoshans are let off scott-free thanks to their agreement with the US government. Phil and Jennifer decide to leave on a human rights campaign, and Colossus and Callisto decide to join them.

#364 continues the Hunt for Xavier arc. Cerebro Prime is controlling a couple of remote units; one team was battling one in the X-Men portion of the story and the other team, along with Xavier's recruits, are battling another in this issue. It appears that the unit kills a couple of X-Men along with Toad and Mimic but Xavier says they are just being teleported somewhere else. Xavier decides the best way to recover them is to go where they are, so he and the rest of the X-Men get zapped as well. Nightcrawler, who was in the plane, decides he better go check on the other team for help.

#464 has what would definitely be a minor first appearance, of Omega Sentinel Karima Shapandar. Betsy and Rachel track down Nocturne but end up somewhat on her side to fight off some Marauders. Rachel's powers trigger "odd" memories for Betsy, which lead to her remembering the proper 616 universe. Her tie to Captain Britain causes him to remember too, along with Meggan. Unfortunately, that's when Karima shows up to arrest Captain Britain.

2nd series #20, Legacy #564. This issue wraps the 2nd series in the aftermath of Avengers vs. X-Men. Magik, who had revealed that she purposefully got Colossus to be possessed by Cyttorak, takes him to Limbo and frees him (also revealing that she could have done it at any time). Dick move, Illyana. Cyclops is visited in prison by the X-Men's PR lady, who reveals that she is actually Mr. Sinister. He possessed her a while back as a back-up plan. Who thought he was really dead, anyway?

Day 65 starts with the question, What did five fingers say to the Angel? Z'Nox, in its first appearance, believes the answer to be slap! The X-Men get back from DC to find that Havok and Lorna (still no code name yet) have news of an alien invasion, along with a plan to stop it. Not believing that they could come up with the plan on their own (harsh), they reveal that Prof. X has been alive all along. He switched places with the Changeling way back when and then hid in the mansion to prepare for the invasion. Changeling then was killed by Groteskk. Today, he trains the X-Men for what they need to do and, in a very convoluted scheme, they defeat the Z'Nox with literal beams of kindness.

#165 has Storm drifting in her space ship, unsure of taking the life of the Brood inside her or letting it kill her (a bit much, since I think even the most ardent non-killers allow for self defense in some capacity). She gets around the decision when the ship drifts into some energy field which zaps Storm, killing the embryo and destroying her ship. The X-Men, along with Lilandra, decide they should go back to Broodworld to mess things up when their ship is swallowed by something. Turns out it's another Acanti, but this one has merged with Storm. Unrelated, Colossus and Kitty tell each other how they feel. Back on Earth, Xavier gets a letter (a letter!) from Reed Richards about a young mutant named Karma. Thinking that the X-Men, missing for weeks, are likely dead, he at first refuses to help her, but Moira convinces him that he should rather than let her powers go out of control.

#265 checks in more thoroughly with Storm. Still a child with unpredictable use of her powers, she's been on the run and thieving when necessary. Nanny and Orphan-Maker are after her, as is the Shadow King. Shadow King, a busy man, has also taken control of Val Cooper and is using her to kill Mystique. Shadow King sets a trap for Storm in a mansion that she's targeting. She breaks in but is attacked by the possessed bodyguard; she fights him off but is injured.

#365 is sort of a combo Christmas/ghost story. Colossus is haunted by a woman's spirit who just says 'remember'. He also has a drawing go missing then return with a story written on it. No one else believes him, of course, but he eventually figures out it's Illyana. She had died of the Legacy Virus at this point, and needed Colossus to do something so that she could move on from Limbo. He finds an old picture of her and everything is settled.

#465 wraps up, I think, the House of M run in Uncanny. I've also just noticed that we have Bachalo on art 100 issues apart. You get a fairly standard multiverse deal with a big battle and closing a portal. Lots of people appear to die, including Captain Britain's wife Meggan, but who knows what will happen when the House of M reverts to normal.

3rd series #1, Legacy #565. 100 issues later, we have Bachalo again! Uncanny took a few months off before returning with a new #1. While the second series was largely all about the return of the Phoenix and restoring mutants to the world, this series is a bit more standard. Magneto and Magik broke Cyclops out of jail and now the mission is back to saving the world and saving mutants. Those core three are joined by Emma and new students Tempus and Triage, who first appeared a couple months prior in All New X-Men. They rescue a new mutant, who will delightfully end up named Goldballs (I guess now he's technically 'Egg'), in his first appearance. As the story frame we see Magneto offering his services as a double agent to Maria Hill and SHIELD; he's pissed that Cyclops killed Xavier and wants him to publicly fail instead of become a martyr. The martyr route still seems kind of likely as both Cyclops and Magneto's powers have gone wonky since the Phoenix possession.

As a side note, I really enjoy how Cyclops' blasts were drawn while his powers were wonky.

Day 66 is a notable one for a few issues. #66 is the last original issue of the initial run, coming out in 1970. The series wouldn't see a new story for five years. In this one, Prof. X is in terrible shape after generating the kindness rays from the previous issue. He's able to tell the team that they need to find the Hulk, which they do in Vegas. The Hulk, of course, thinks they're attacking him so they have to fend him off until he turns back into Banner. Banner remembers making some kind of gamma ray for mental exhaustion, but the army shows up before he can tell them anything else and the Hulk is off again. The team follows to the desert and has to defend themselves a second time, but finds one of Banner's hidden labs with the ray thanks to the destruction. They get it back to the mansion and save Xavier.

#166 features the first appearance of a (currently unnamed) Lockheed. Storm, joined with the Acanti space whale, convinces the team that they should help the rest of the Acanti instead of wiping out the Brood. The soul of the leader of the Acanti is trapped in its body on Broodworld and can't merge with the new prophet, so Storm and Binary cause a distraction while the rest of the team goes for the soul. The Starjammers make an appearance to save the ladies' bacon. Unfortunately, Cyclops has started transforming and gives the team away. Kitty, separated from the squad, is saved by a little alien dragon. Wolverine gets loose and frees the rest of the team, and Binary frees the Acanti prophet soul. This turns the Brood Queen into crystal, destroys the other Brood and their embryos, and restores Storm to normal. Everything's solved! Except for the suspicion that maybe there's another embryo in Xavier back on Earth...

#266 is, of course, the first appearance of Gambit (Annual 14 aside). Storm is trying to get away from Shadow King's possessed goons in the mansion and gets an unexpected hand from Gambit. They escape to Storm's hideout, which Nanny and Orphan-Maker have almost found. Back in DC, the King-possessed Val Cooper comes for Mystique. Mystique is expecting her thanks to a letter from Destiny but doesn't seem to stop Val from shooting her.

#366 manages to sneak in a couple first appearances; a Magneto Acolyte named Vindaloo and Astra. Magneto War started in a one-shot with Fabian Cortez leading some Acolytes to the mansion to try to probe Xavier's mind to find out if Joseph is Magneto or not. This issue picks up with the X-Men following the Acolytes to try to find Magneto. After some skirmishing the X-Men figure out that they're just being kept busy. Magneto has sent a robot, Ferris, to the United Nations to demand a sanctuary for mutants or else he will disrupt the entire Earth's magnetosphere. Magneto gives the world a little taste by sending a world-wide EM pulse, causing the X-Men to crash in the Arctic as they chase the Acolytes back to Magneto. Joseph is in Israel with Sabra running tests; he is a Magneto clone. As he walks around soaking in this info, he is attacked by a woman who says he can call her mom.

#466 picks up after House of M and moves right into Decimation; Scarlet Witch has said "no more mutants" and a huge portion of the mutant population lost their powers. Sentinels are now stationed at the mansion under the Office of National Emergency (ONE). Val Cooper is there to tell the team that the Sentinels are there for their protection, but the X-Men are obviously hesitant. Rachel leaves to go to a party and meet many of her Grey family relatives, only to have her grandfather killed right in front of her.

3rd series #2, Legacy #566 starts a series of cool covers by Bachalo and Townsend (I like them, anyway). We get some post-Phoenix Scott and Emma discussion where they actually talk since Emma's powers are also on the fritz. They're going to try the "we're still friends" break-up. The new kids, with Goldballs and Morph (but not that Morph) officially signed on, are worried about their families. Everyone except Magneto teleports to Australia to meet Tempus' family, and Magneto immediately rats them out to SHIELD. Tempus just gets in a hello to her mom when the Avengers fly in.

Day 67 sadly starts with the first reprint issue. It came out at the end of 1970, about 9 months after 66. I guess if they have anything going for them, they reprint two stories so you at least get your money's worth. This one has #12 and 13.

#167 has the team back on Earth as they launch a sneak-attack on Prof. X and the New Mutants. Kitty finds Xavier and thinks that they beat the embryo taking over, but it was a ploy as he becomes a new Brood Queen. During the fight Cyclops realizes that Xavier is still in there, though, and so the team decides to make a clone body and transfer his mind into it (maybe in an early inspiration for the current state of the X-Men universe). That works, but Xavier still can't walk because his mind psychosomatically won't let his legs work. Gladiator shows up with some bad news though; Deathbird has taken Lilandra's throne while she's been on Earth, and Reed Richards saved Galactus' life. Xavier decides to send Kitty down to the New Mutants, leading to a well-known (and accurate) splash page in the next issue.

#267 has Storm and Gambit chased down to New Orleans after separate attacks by the Shadow King's goons and Nanny and Orphan-Maker. They decide to work as partners but Gambit gets captured by Nanny and Orphan-Maker. Storm sneaks on the ship and finally remembers what happened - when the two captured her back in 248 they swapped her into the child's body and wiped her memories while Havok killed a Life Model Decoy. Enraged, Storm goes on the attack and crashes the ship with only her and Gambit seeming to survive. Storm is still happy to be partners but tells Gambit about some folks called the X-Men.

#367 continues the Magneto War. In the intervening X-Men issue we learned more about Joseph's past, and Russia tried to nuke Magneto but he blew them up before they reached him - but closer to the X-Men in the Arctic. Xavier used his powers to have the Acolytes protect the team from the nuclear attack, and then has them attack the X-Men so that their ship will be unprotected. The X-Men take out the Acolytes and take their ship. They're too late to get to Magneto though, as Joseph and Astra found him first. Astra destroys the amplifier that Magneto is using to threaten the magnetosphere, causing him to absorb all the energy and nearly kill Astra. That's when Joseph jumps in on the fight.

#467 has a cover that I believe was reprinted on a different issue and released with an action figure. It also has the first appearance of the Shi'Ar Death Commandos, who were responsible for killing Rachel's grandfather last issue. They continue killing the Grey family, even after Rachel calls for help and Nightcrawler brings Psylocke and Kitty. The commandos take everyone out and pour something on Rachel's back that burns the Phoenix symbol into her skin, making her traceable forever.

3rd series #3, Legacy #567. The Avengers have come to rearrest Cyclops and everyone has a discussion about who exactly was responsible for what during Avengers vs X-Men. Just before the battle can start, Eva stops time for the Avengers. The X-Men teleport back to base and confront Magneto, who obviously sold them out, and hear that he's acting as a double agent to get SHIELD's trust. The teachers head to the Jean Grey School (the mansion, headed by Wolverine) to try to recruit more students.
