Such an awesome cover. One of my favorites from the Silvestri era.

Yeah, I just added it to my 9.8 list. I was hoping this whole thing would dig up a few more issues to sell but I think it's mostly making me want more extra copies.

Day 52 starts by wrapping up the Mesmero arc. Erik the Red is let into Mutant City, where he turns out to be Cyclops in disguise. He lets the rest of the team in, and Iceman has snuck in as well. The team battles Magneto, Mesmero, and the Demi-Men but get a critical boost when Iceman tells Lorna that he looked into her background, and her parents died in a plane crash shortly after her birth. Therefor she can't be Magneto's daughter, and she joins the X-Men. Magneto self-destructs the base but the X-Men escape with new recruit Lorna back to San Fran.

I believe this nicer copy is from @esavaro

and this one I already had.

#152 features early (maybe the first?) pencil work from Bob McLeod at Marvel, and certainly on the X-books. The cover also makes much more sense if you remember that last issue Storm and Emma Frost switched bodies. Storm and Kitty escape the Massachusetts Academy and are able to free Wolverine, then the rest of the X-Men, at the mansion. The team fight the Hellfire Club and Storm is able to zap Emma and switch back. The two sides call a cease-fire after Sebastian Shaw is thrown in a lake by Colossus, but Emma swears the X-Men will pay.

#252 is also an early art credit for an important X-artist, featuring a cover by Jim Lee (but not his best, and not the interiors). The Reavers find that Wolverine is off his cross and release cyborg hounds to find him; Wolvie and Jubilee are holed up while he heals.

#352 doesn't have an early artist, but it has a lot of them! Six credited, to be specific. Most of the story is of Jean and Scott heading to Alaska for some R&R after Zero Tolerance, but first they have to fight off some AIM scientists who board the plane. Back at the mansion, Cannonball leaves the team to join a new iteration of X-Force and Archangel catches a bunch of flack for not being at the mansion to help with the clean-up.

#452 has echos of 152, with Claremont at the helm and a Hellfire Club story arc. Emma's on the X-side by now so she helps the team track down Sage. She and Rachel end up in Hong Kong and work on stopping a mutant slave auction, with the plot twist at the end of Selene showing up. For some reason the transporter stuck the rest of the team in sewers under Paris, where Bishop for some reasons shoots his buddies.

2nd series #8, Legacy #552. We finally wrap up our trip to Tabula Rasa. The Savage explains that everyone that lives there is still in danger because they aren't used to direct sunlight; everyone will get cancer. Colossus kills a bunch of things that kidnapped Magik, then she has to calm him down from going full Juggernaut. The team finally finishes clearing out the civilians that had gotten trapped in the bubble, and SWORD helps build a dome around Tabula Rasa to fix the sunlight issue. Magneto tells Psylocke that he'll keep X-Force a secret from the rest of the team.

Day 53 starts with a one-off issue featuring the work of Barry (Windsor) Smith. Jean is trying out one of Prof. X's weird psychic machines when something goes wrong and it pulls Blastaar into the mansion. Everyone immediately goes into fight mode and Blastaar is defeated when melted Iceman constructs short-circuit the machine and fry him.

#153 is also kind of a one-off issue. Illyana (still just Colossus' little sister Illyana, not Magik yet) is scared with all the reconstruction going on at the mansion so Kitty tells her a bedtime story. It's a retelling of the Dark Phoenix saga except Kitty and Colossus are pirates. They meet a blind prince who can shoot fire from his eyes and a wizard who floats on a magic carpet, and other X-Men analogues, who are looking for their friend Jean. Jean has been corrupted by a great power. Kitty and Colossus help, along with Kitty's pet (a giant black dragon named Lockheed, before Lockheed exists), and they eventually stop Dark Phoenix when the wizard is able to transfer Jean's good spirit from a magic ball back into her body.

#253 has a lot going on, as the cover suggests. Banshee has to rescue Polaris, who still has her new strength/invulnerability powers instead of magnetism. Moira and Magneto argue about the missing New Mutants (this would be around the time they are in Asgard) and Magneto seems to be burning bridges. A little girl is found in Cairo, Illinois who seems an awful lot like Storm. Forge has a vision while meditating of the little girl and also gets a psychic visit from Amahl Farouk, the Shadow King, who tells him that Storm is indeed alive and needs his help. Back in Australia the Reavers are still looking for Wolverine; Lady Deathstrike says she hasn't seem him but in fact is waiting for him to heal up a bit and make it a more worthy fight.

#353 also touches on a lot of places. Scott and Jean finally make it to Alaska. Jean has to clear a bunch of snow from their house, which happens to leave a shape like the Phoenix. Archangel thinks Psylocke is acting oddly, and we get reminded that Deathbird and Bishop are still in space. But most of the story is about Rogue, who has a dream about being compelled to drain Wolverine's energy. She talks to Storm about feeling guilty for that and leaving Gambit behind. Later Wolverine is actually found drained but it turns out to be Sauron.

#453 picks up after Bishop has blasted the rest of the team. Apparently it was to get rid of a bunch of nannites down in the sewers. Nightcrawler teleports them out and they continue to look for Sage and the Hellfire Club. They find Sebastian Shaw along with the new Black King, Sunspot. Supposedly the Hellfire Club is reorganizing into a group that helps mutants. They're all attacked by the person actually behind the nannites, Donald Pierce. Meanwhile in the Hong Kong Hellfire Club, Emma and Rachel continue trying to stop the mutant auction while Selene stalks after Rachel.

2nd series #9, Legacy #553. Cyclops get a call from SWORD that a bunch of alien prisoners have crashed on Earth as part of a jailbreak by a robot called Unit. The X-Men and Avengers round up most of the prisoners but Unit is in Canada killing a family to find out about humans. Next he wants to learn about mutants so he puts out a signal that Cerebra picks up as a new mutant. Hope and the Five Lights go to check it out but Unit mind controls Pixie into teleporting the rest of them away so he can have some one-on-one time with Hope.

Day 54 starts with a good one as we meet Scott's brother Alex Summers for the first time. He's graduating college but is kidnapped by people in old-tyme Egyptian clothing when he goes to meet the team for drinks. The team tracks him down and rescues him from the Living Pharaoh (first appearance), who thinks he can preserve his mutant powers by killing Alex. Scott tells Alex that he's a mutant and leader of the X-Men but the conversation gets cut by the Pharaoh returning and knocking Cyclops out. Cyclops wakes up with the Pharaoh apparently dead next to him and the cops right there, but gets away into the Pharaoh's HQ, just to run into the Pharaoh.

I have this one pulled out to send in for the CBCS deal this month.

#154 also has a first appearance, but it's only Sidrian hunters. Cyclops and Storm are holding down the mansion when Corsair lands. He breaks it to Cyclops that he's his dad, which Cyclops rejects, but more importantly there are these hunters after him. Apparently Lilandra has been kidnapped and signs point to Earth. Between the three of them they defeat the hunters and Corsair kills them all, upsetting Cyclops and Storm. The rest of the team is in Magneto's former base in the Bermuda Triangle, which they are taking over for themselves. Carol Danvers is with them in the aftermath of Rogue's first appearance.

the less nice copy.

#254 has another Jim Lee cover but still no interiors. It's also a GSX 1 swipe. The Reavers attack Muir Island, shooting Banshee in the chest early on. Legion is eager to fight but seems to be keeping the battle going, and even gets Sunder (a Morlock) killed on purpose. Mystique and Freedom Force get called to Valerie Cooper's office, with Forge there, and are told that they are headed to Muir Island because it's under attack.

#354 finishes the fight with Sauron. Rogue realizes she did drain Wolverine after Sauron did, and she give Joseph mouth-to-mouth when he is unconscious. Realizing that she's getting a little too absorb-happy, Rogue takes a taxi to a clinic with the mutant cure. Bishop finally realizes that Deathbird is keeping him captive in space, and their ship is attacked. Scott is surprised to see Jean walking around in her old Phoenix costume.

the variant has that Jean costume

2nd series #10, Legacy #554. Abigail Brand tells Cyclops that they need to get Unit, who is in Canada, and they realize Hope is there as well. They explicitly ditch the Avengers to go to Canada to rescue Hope, and Magik gets her away, but Unit takes out the team easily. He only stops when Danger steps in, and is taken to their prison. This all seems like a ploy by Unit when he takes control of Danger to get access to Hope again.

Day 55 starts with the (unsurprising) reveal that Alex Summers is also a mutant. The Living Pharaoh knocks out Cyclops again and takes off with him and Alex for Egypt. The rest of the team follows, even after the Pharaoh shoots down their plane, and a fight goes on at the Pharaoh's headquarters. To save his brother and his friends, Alex instinctively shoots energy blasts out of his hands. As a side note, the back-up stories have moved from the Beast's origins to Angel's.

#155 is a good one if you like creepy aliens - it's the first appearance of the Brood. The X-Men negotiate with the Shi'Ar for a day to find Lilandra before they start a war. They find that she was kidnapped by Deathbird with assistance from the Brood, and the early fighting does not go well. Colossus gets hit with acid meant for Xavier but is saved by Storm; when they leave the two to recover, Deathbird comes back and takes Xavier and apparently kills Colossus. Kitty, left on the Shi'Ar ship with Nightcrawler as a kind of collateral, again shows that she is the most important X-Man by starting to hack their computers.

#255 also has a first appearance (Matsu'o Tsurayaba) and a couple of last appearances. Legion is still sabotaging the fight against Lady Deathstrike and the Reavers when Forge and Freedom Force arrive. Avalanche and Blob are countered by the Reavers, and Stonewall is electrocuted to death by Donald Pierce. Forge comes to the rescue but has to leave Destiny unprotected, and she is killed as well. The Reavers teleport away. Elsewhere, Matsu'o shows up on a small island where Psylocke washed up. She's apparently lost her memory, but Matsu'o thinks the Hand can find a use for her.

#355 has another one of those misunderstandings with Alpha Flight. They come to get Wolverine because they think he killed Madison Jeffries (who I just now learned is a Alpha Flight 1 first appearance), people with poor social skills cause a fight, then things calm down when it becomes clear that Wolvie couldn't have done it. Classic.

#455 isn't a first appearance but a reappearance. Psylocke mysteriously returns from the dead (back in X-Treme X-Men) but no one, including her, can figure out how or why. She was even autopsied, so this should be good! In the meantime Wolverine was taking care of something of his own in Canada; the team follows up when X-23 triggers the distress signal in the X-plane. What happened, and why is X-23 there? So many mysteries!

2nd series #11, Legacy #555. This is the first issue of the Avengers vs X-Men story in the series; #1 of the mini-series had come out earlier that month. The Phoenix Force is headed to Earth and Cyclops is convinced that Hope will use it to reignite the mutant race (this is when there are only 192 mutants left thanks to the Scarlet Witch). Captain America comes to take Hope but that starts a fight. Wolverine, on the side of the Avengers, comes for Hope but she gets away and escapes the island.

People can say what they want about Claremont's writing style but he was pretty keen on making strong, complex female characters in X-Men before forced diversity was a requirement.

Yeah, and he wrote Ms. Marvel at the same time. I believe he was pretty pissed at what the Avengers writers did with her. If there were more Chris Claremonts we wouldn't need 'forced diversity'.

Day 56 wraps up the Living Pharaoh story. The Pharaoh reveals to Alex that they both get their power from cosmic rays and if one gets stronger, the other one gets weaker. He steals a bunch of Alex's power and turns into a giant stone version of himself, the Living Monolith. The X-Men do their best to fight the Monolith but they only succeed when Alex manages to tap his power once more, both shrinking the Monolith and destroying the temple when he can't control it.
