xkonk's Days of Uncanny X-Men Past12232

#237 has Wolverine and Rogue continue their attempt to escape from Genosha. They don't have their powers but they are invisible to scanners thanks to the Roma/Adversary shenanigans before they landed in Australia. Unfortunately, without his healing factor to fight the adamantium in his body, Wolverine is dying. On the plus side, the rest of the X-Men make it to Genosha and begin getting answers.

#337 happens after Onslaught has been defeated, and is mostly a pick-me-up for Xavier who is understandably feeling pretty down on himself. This cover might also technically have qualified for this week's contest (although it's a day late).

#437 introduces a Romeo and Juliet story between the Guthrie's and the Cabot's back in Husk's hometown. She also breaks up with Angel.

If you want to see a change in artist style, take a look at this cover and then go back the the 5th series issues from the past few days (11 through 16). They're all by the same guy, Salvador Larocca. We'll see more of Larocca here as he's on the book for through #443.

#537 has Kruun depower Colossus and beat him up pretty good. He also grabs Kitty and gets her out of her suit, so when she runs for help she can't do much in her phased state. She manages to get Wolverine, who fights Kruun, but one of the other Breakworlders uses their special metal to kill her.

5th series #18, Legacy #637. The bodycount continues with a batch of Marauders clones and Chamber. The team also fights Mr. Sinister, who turns Havok translucent before he is defeated, and loses Wolverine and Karma to not wanting to be there anymore.

Day 38 continues the Factor Three story. The X-Men get a tip on their plans to start WWIII and split up. Cyclops and Iceman have to fight the American military when they don't believe their ICBM base has been inflitrated, and Jean/Beast/Angel have to fight Vanisher, Blob, and some Russian soldiers when the Eastern bloc honchos aren't cooperative either. The latter three are able to defeat the bad guys but are arrested by the soldiers.

#138 formally wraps the Dark Phoenix storyline with Jean's funeral. Scott takes up the whole issue by remembering his time with the X-Men (basically recapping the series like I am), and then announces that he's leaving the team. But the roster stays full because Kitty Pryde pulls up to the mansion to join the school.

#238 has the X-Men rescue Rogue, Wolverine, and Madelyne but in terms of developments is more Madelyne-centric. She had a vision when the Genegineer tried to scan her, thinking she turned into something like the Phoenix and destroyed the city. She looked suspiciously Goblin Queen-like while the Genegineer looked a little Sinister. Otherwise, the X-Men leave Genosha without destroying the whole place so that the Genegineer's son can have a chance to show everyone what they've been doing to mutants.

#338 is the first of two Angel-centric stories today. Angel's metal wings shed and he finds he has feathered wings again, even though they had been amputated. Psylocke shows off a new shadow transportation ability from the Crimson Dawn, and the team helps subdue Pyro, who is losing control of his powers due to the Legacy Virus. Iceman and Cannonball go undercover as volunteers for Graydon Creed's campaign.

100 issues later (#438), Angel is in Kentucky with Paige and the rest of the Guthries. The story introduces rival family the Cabots and how the youngin's Julia Cabot and Josh Guthrie, fell for each other when they didn't know about each other's families. Coincidentally, that's actually Josh/Jay on the cover below. He also has wings and will later be Icarus on the team.

#538 reveals that Kitty didn't die after all (sort of)! After the Breakworlder killed Kitty, she transferred her lifeforce to Kitty, which also fixed her phasing problem. She finally gets the rest of the X-Men together, so Kruun stands down, and finds out what happened. He uses some of his lifeforce to resurrect his love and they all realize that maybe they shouldn't be so mean all the time. Being refugees, the Breakworlders are given a run-down part of San Fran to live in as Breakworldtown.

5th series #19, Legacy #638. We get to see why Emma is starting to appear on covers. It turns out she was captured by General Callahan and ONE, and she got out by turning over Beast's mutant cure. In the meantime the X-Men all die in the battle with X-Man. Emma starts a new Hellfire Club, which doesn't get very far when Callahan blows up Vanisher. Currently Emma has Elixir, Marrow, and Mystique working with her and they just grabbed Mr. Sinister. Then Wolverine and Kwannon show up.

Day 39 has the X-Men succeed in saving the world despite evil mutants and two country's militaries. They then track down Mutant Master's hideout and take the fight to him, along with a finally-recovered Banshee. It turns out that Mutant Master is actually an alien who was trying to get Earth ready for invasion, and Prof. X returns as well. As something of a reward (or maybe just good timing?) the team gets new individual costumes instead of the matching togs they've had so far.

#139 picks back up on the first appearance train, adding Heather Hudson and Stevie Hunter to the universe. Kitty formally joins the team with her codename of Sprite and starts dancing lessons with Stevie. Meanwhile, Wolverine takes Nightcrawler to Canada to make nice with Alpha Flight. They meet Heather, Vindicator's wife, and realize that AF is on a Wendigo hunt.

#239 checks in on Mr. Sinister and Malice, who appears to be permanently bonded to Polaris. More importantly, Mr. Sinister has Cyclops and Madelyne's kidnapped baby in stasis. Speaking of Madelyne, she makes her move on Havok and lets the demon N'Astirh know that she wants revenge on the Marauders and to have her baby back. The Empire State Building starts to be possessed by demons and eat people.

#339 shows that apparently Havok has gone bad and started a new Brotherhood. He tries to attack J. Jonah Jameson, who has been reporting on Graydon Creed. The X-Men save Jonah but not one of his reporters, who is separately killed by Bastion. Bastion needs Creed's parentage to stay a secret until Operation: Zero Tolerance gets started.

#539 gets a Simone Bianchi cover. I come and go on his artwork but you always know it's him. Plotwise, Hope is kidnapped by the Crimson Commando, who is slowly being killed by his cybernetics since M-Day took away his mutant powers. He thinks that Hope can restart them. Wolverine comes to the rescue and, after it becomes clear that the Commando is not playing nice, kills him. In a true bonding moment, Hope and Wolverine talk about Wolverine killing her if she ever goes bad.

5th series #20, Legacy #639. Dark Beast finds a solution to the mutant cure/vaccine and says it needs to be airborne, so the X-Men spread it around. It turns out that the solution puts kids into a coma if they receive the vaccine, so Magik kills him by teleporting him into the ceiling. Lesson learned? Meanwhile, Wolverine and Kwannon fight Emma's Hellfire Club but Wolverine is captured by ONE soldiers in the aftermath. They also grab Mr. Sinister.

Day 40 starts with a fight against a robot that looks like Frankenstein's monster. There's also been an ongoing back-up story for a few issues, laying out Cyclops' background and how Prof. X found him.

This is a very tidy copy from Mr. @esavaro

#240 kicks off Inferno proper as Madelyne becomes the Goblin Queen and destroys Jean Grey's headstone out of jealousy. Jean's parents were coincidentally visiting it and she turns them into demons. N'Astirh teleports them to an orphanage in Nebraska and finds Mr. Sinister's cloning setup. Meanwhile, Havok finds that the Marauders are in the Morlock tunnels. They go start a fight but when it spills up into the streets everyone is surprised to see that the city has been transformed.

Going through this series has really brought me around on Marc Silvestri. I wasn't originally going to make the run part of my 9.8 search but maybe it'll be part of phase 2.

#340 has Graydon Creed's men beat up William Drake as a message to Bobby. Oddly, it's because William has started being publicly pro-mutant, not because they know that Bobby is really Iceman. Bobby leaves the team to help his family.

#440 has the family feud move into the bloodshed phase as the Cabots attack Jay Guthrie (as well as their own daughter) and Polaris. Back at the house, the sheriff reveals that not only is he jealous of Jay's mother but he's also a racist and bigot.

5th series #21, Legacy #640. You're not going to believe this, but more X-Men die! Most of the team confronts Emma, who reveals that she removed herself from their memories and subconsciously pushed them toward finding the targets they've been finding. Instead, it's ONE that they should worry about. Speaking of which, Wolverine escapes from their custody and, on the way out, mercy-kills Velocidad who has been used to grow Warlocks. The X-Men teleport in and the battle is going ok until a Transmode Sentinel shows up and kills Banshee, and General Callahan reveals that he can turn off Magik's mutant powers. This lets Darkchylde take over and she takes away Juggernaut's Cyttorak gem and teleports him somewhere. The team has to escape to the Hellfire Club headquarters.

Day 41 starts with the first appearance of Grotesk (to the X-Men; Gor-Tok to his people), only survivor of a large subterranean race accidentally destroyed by a nuclear test. Would you believe that radiation gave him super powers? He runs into the team a couple times while trying to get an earthquake machine, and Xavier is acting like an ass again.

After taking a break from one of the X-Men's most important stories, Claremont starts another classic with #141. In the present the new Brotherhood plans to assassinate Senator Robert Kelly, who is working on an anti-mutant bill. Mystique is their leader, with first appearances for Destiny, Avalanche, and Pyro (with Blob along for the ride). 33 years in the future, mutants have been put in camps run by Sentinels. Rachel Summers (in her first appearance) sends grown-up Kate Pryde's mind back in time to her childhood body, where she tells the team that they have to prevent the assassination in order to avoid her future. Seems legit since Franklin Richards and Magneto die as the future team escapes their camp.

Also, while 'Uncanny' has been on the logo starting with #139, CBCS says that this is the last time the indica says only 'X-Men'.

#241 details how Madelyne happens to look exactly like Jean Grey. Mr. Sinister cloned Jean after failing to keep her from joining Xavier's school but nothing happened until Jean became the Phoenix. Then Sinister got her a job in Alaska so she would run into Cyclops. Madelyne, fully embracing the whole Goblin Queen thing, is suitably pissed and says the world will burn, starting with her baby. Meanwhile, the X-Men finish their fight with the Marauders, including some that had died in previous battles. Colossus recognizes some demons and sees that the X-Men are starting to act oddly and decides that it's time to find his sister.

#341 is a Christmas issue, so now the thread has Christmas in July (almost). Cannonball separates from the squad briefly when Gladiator suddenly teleports into the store. Cannonball takes the fight outside and holds up surprisingly well. When Beast (along with Trish Tilby), Gambit, Bishop, Rogue, and Joseph show up, Gladiator says that the Shi'Ar empire is in danger and needs their help. He then teleports them away but leaves Cannonball because of his young age. Seems shortsighted since he just fought so well.
