xkonk's Days of Uncanny X-Men Past12232

Collector xkonk private msg quote post Address this user
Inspired by @esavaro 's X-Men run thread and the calendar of the day thread, I thought I would post pics of my own Uncanny run. Unfortunately I don't quite have them all but I thought it would also be nice to pull out what I do have and take a look. I might even find some fodder for the sales thread.

To speed things along a bit I'm borrowing from the calendar thread and will post 100 days of Uncanny books, starting with 1/101/201/301... then 2/102/202... on day 2, and so on. That will hopefully keep the later books a bit more appetizing :-) Hope folks enjoy.

I don't have #1 (although it is my birthday if anyone's looking for a gift....) but I can still start with a cool book thanks to 101.

I also have this second copy. It looks like it has some stains and creases, so not as nice unfortunately. If anyone's looking for a copy and doesn't mind it being a little rough, let me know.

201 is the battle between Storm and Cyclops for leadership of the X-Men, as well as the first appearance of baby Cable (as people like to say on eBay).

I got this copy signed at Keystone Con in Philly last year, and am sad it is canceled this year (although I probably wouldn't have gone even if they ran it). Leonardi was kind of an interesting guy in that, when I told him that I was going to get the book graded, he said he didn't know what that meant. Also the only free signature I got that weekend.

And here's my newsstand copy.

#301, when the X-Men were still fairly recently split into the Gold and Blue teams and were battling the Upstarts. This is apparently the first appearance of Sienna Blaze, although you'd be forgiven for not knowing that.

And a newsstand copy.

#401. I wasn't actively collecting at this point so I have to read back to catch all the storylines. This was apparently a silent issue so the cover is kinda ironic.

#501, when the X-Men were based in San Francisco. I had started subscribing again at this point and regretting it because of Greg Land and his faces.

#1 from the 4th series, which would be 'legacy number' 601. The first series of Uncanny ended at 544 so I have to decide how to count the other stuff. I thought I would go with the legacy system instead of swamping today with a bunch of #1s. But as it so happens the third series ended with a shift back to #600 and this new series is thus 601. This was almost an X-Force type series, with a group of the meaner X-Men being led by Magneto after the more recent Secret Wars.

@OGJackster very nice! I don't know how long it would take me to save up for one like that. I'm hoping maybe I can look at a starter copy in a year or two.

@xkonk It kinda blew me away to see what it's worth now ($17,000). I bought it raw for $250 back in the 90's.

Day 2 starts with my newly acquired #2. I don't think there was any bump in price thanks to Brad Pitt, especially since they changed his powers for the movie.

X-Men 102 gives Storm's origin story and also reminds me of the 90s X-Men cartoon. It took a long time for me to connect the cartoon's plot to various points in the actual X-Men storyline.

#202, a Secret Wars II crossover like it says on the cover. Rachel tries to fight the Beyonder, and the team also has to fight some Omega Sentinels. I don't know where Omega ranks on the Sentinel scale but they certainly were not the last model.

#302. I've usually found JR. Jr art to be pretty distinctive but I don't have a strong feeling about it. Usually when someone has a 'style' I like it or don't like it; JRJR is fine.

A helpfully labeled direct edition.

And a newsstand.

#402, part of a run where Banshee organized a mutant police (X-Corp) that included some bad guys like the Blob. Cue discussion about who you can trust, redemption, etc. Hint: it will turn out that Banshee shouldn't have trusted longtime Brotherhood members.

#502, continuing the X-Men's x-ploits in San Fran. Stupid Greg Land.

4th series #2, Legacy #602. They let Land draw way too many X-books.

I don't have an X-Men 3, although I've been keeping an eye out, so Day 3 starts with #103.

#203 continues the X-Men confronting the Beyonder. The Marvel Wiki page for this one is kind of funny in that pretty much everyone in the comic is killed and resurrected in the same issue. You don't have to wait years for a comic trope to come through! https://marvel.fandom.com/wiki/Uncanny_X-Men_Vol_1_203

#303, Illyana dies from the Legacy virus (although she'll get better; what a coincidence from the previous post!). I occasionally look for the Pressman copy of this issue, with the gold background, but have yet to pull the trigger on one.

#503, Land gonna Land. You *might* be able to convince me that if you gave these two women the same haircut you could still tell them apart, but it would take a lot of convincing.

4th series #3/ Legacy #603. I don't mind Land as much when he's drawing men, although he still isn't my favorite.

#304, 30th anniversary issue. 90s hologram! The next issue in the storyline is X-Men 25 when Magneto rips out Wolverine's adamantium.
