Sometimes it's best to let things go. Not because you are wrong, but because some folks just like to rile people up.

Anything else you attach to that contention is simply no sequitar. it doesn't matter what dealers do, or what I do....or for that matter when comic grading became a thing, or even if people would or would not be lost without them. They are authorities by definition of posessing a great skill or knowledge ina given area or field.....I don't think anyone here would care to argue Steve Borock does not have great expertise or knowledge, let alone skill. Is that your implication?

That's obvious. One can only lead a horse to water...

Incidentally I am not a horse to be led...nor is your contortion of definitions any form of water so much as perhaps kool aid.

The dictionary gives a clear set of meanings for the word. I am applying that whereas you are placing conditional relations to the terms which are not given.
You have been educated, take care

Mechanics deal in science. That's how context works.

A chef is not an authority on how to prepare food. Cooking is a skill - not a science. Again, this is how context works.

You would say "yes", and be wrong. Objective spectators would say no. Did you even read the definitions you posted, or just trolling the 1 line in the last one...? Authorities have objectives that they do order/demand.

Again, it's called "context". It matters. In the context of mechanics, science has mechanical engineering authority. Food prep doesn't. Comic book grading doesn't.

As talented as Mr. Borock is, he can grade a comic book, and anyone is free to disagree with the number he chooses. Neither person can be incorrect. You see this disparity even between the 2 largest grading groups. There is no authority.

You're right.

I just don't like people spreading misinformation. It's a waste of time when speaking into deaf ears, though.

except that isn't all Mr Borock does or knows.

Mechanics actually deal in science, the application and understanding of many intersecting areas of knowledge.j

A chef is absoloutely an authority on how to prepare food...having a concise knowledge of how heat and cold, texture and handling all affect a given food. that is science...knowing if you beat egg whites to stiff peaks by combining air, is how to make a merinque, but if you overbeat that mixture it will collapse as the air escapes it. get it to peak perfectly and you can use a torch to heat the edges causing them to carmelize, and appear baked....more science. Then chilling it quickly so the air does not escape, more science. Again this is how context works..using science and knowledge to perform a task.

I would say yes, again and again, with only you saying I am wrong.

As for the people at CGC and CBCS they are authorities..they combine knowledge in many specialized areas along with skills to perform tasks.

It doesn't matter if someone disagrees with a grade steve assigns...he is an authority..that does not attempt to argue he is infallible. Disparity between grading groups has nothing to do with the discussion....its a simple matter, do the people at CBCS or CGC posess high levels of knowledge and skill in their given area. the answer is yes..the dictionary definition of the word considers them as authorities.
You can attempt to throw in subject, objective and as many other smoke and mirror straw man arguments as you desire. End of the day they meet the definition of the term authority

After reading some posts in this thread I wish I hadn't.

Perhaps going forward we might want to be a bit more constructive in thinking of what might add value to a discussion before posting.

Just my two cents.

I honored my original discount, tossed him a free soda(it's hot in TX) talked comics a bit. Not sure if he'll be back, but he expressed interest in my layaway and other books/statues.

Well I get it, He wants to buy for as low as he Can, and I want to sell for as much as I can. I was there at some point in my life as well.

I'm not the business with the expectation that I'm going to make bank. In fact I opened LCS in order to live my dream after my accident. I worked for the man, was unhappy with that even though it made a lot of money, had the accident decided I'm going to do me with what time I have left. My friends abandoned me, my wife left me(TMI I know) and I am always two steps removed from being bed bound. My LCS keeps me integrated to the community, active and gives me purpose. I donate books and toys to the local women's shelter and I am surrounded by the stuff I love. So I charge what a charge to keep the lights on and nothing more.

@starlord

It's one thing to be wanting to get a decent price. It's another to be insulting. I try and be mindful of that when offering a price to a person.

As for your personal life, you lead it in a way that makes you happy. How many of us can say we do the same? How many can say we do for others when most just think of themselves?

In this day and age, kindness, generosity and empathy I find are hard qualities to find in others. (Granted, I am far from perfect as well.)
