Today I discovered my Marvel Tales 143 (spider man) is a Mark Jewelers Newsstand. No info on CPG and Go Collect wasn’t much help. Are these worth hanging on to?

@HulkSmash Some collectors seek out the Mark Jewelers books and pay a premium for them. I believe they are books that went to military bases. Other boardies may have more information.

Can someone explain to me what a Mark Jewelers Newsstand even is? Did they create a UPC code just for books that were sold at Mark Jewelers? Because that definitely makes no sense to my small brain.

@Masochism They are Newsstand prints with a centerfold Ad insert for Mark Jewelers. As far as specific UPC I don’t have anything to compare it to.

Do we know of a time span that these were produced? Like "Various titles between 19-- and 19--"?

@Masochism @Masochism Ads ran 1972 - 1986 in multiple titles. That’s all I know.

I mentally put them in the same category as newsstands, which is to say that some people care and put a premium on them. If you search for Marvel Tales on MCS, MJ is broken out into separate listings like they do for price variants. For what it's worth they aren't buying regular copies of 143 and probably wouldn't pay more than a buck or two for it (guessing from issues nearby that they would buy), but they'll buy an MJ for as much as $11 if it's NM. That means they'd probably try to sell it for ~$25 (I'm guessing). |

I think they ran into the early 90s. LCS had a New Mutants 98 MJ copy a few months ago.

I try to buy as many keys with Mj insert, I think They are way undervalued. Was thinking of starting a thread for showing off your mark jewels

I collect Spider-Man comics with Mark Jewelers inserts (and National Diamond Sales which pre-date Mark Jewelers). It's what you do when you finish collecting the full set without them, but you want to keep on collecting. The Mark Jewelers inserts for Amazing Spider-Man, for example, run for about 30 years -- from issue #97 thru #349. They aren't in every single issue, but are in most of them in that range.

If most collectors are like me they never really gave collecting MJ’s a thought because of the lack understanding how rare they are. In the last few years the seem to be garnishing more attention and value. No I have to go look back through over 1400 marvel and dc books, man I never seem to get caught up on my collection being labeled correctly ![]() |

I believe the books with the Mark Jeweler inserts were sold primarily on Military bases? Presumably the purchased books were not well preserved, making the nicer surviving copies somewhat rare and interesting. Never owned one myself but I think they have a cool backstory. |

I have a few info on here seems right, it was an advert aimed at oversees military personnel so was put into newsstand comics, I have occasionally seen mark jewellers inserts advertised as been in comics with no UPC code non newsstand these are fake always in newsstand copies. In terms of collecting they are obviously far less numerous than normal so you would think should attract a higher price. I would always buy one over a non copy but not massively more. |

@Batman66 they have inserts, don't remember if Mark Jewelers or National Diamond Sales, but the three I know I have off the top of my head are Sub-Mariner #59, Ghosts #59, and X-Men #103 (I think that's the one, I'll have to check but it's in the early 100's).

@Studley_Dudley Im not sure what year they stopped in the 90s, but I remember by dad being stationed in Germany in the early 90s and like a dummy ripping the inserts out of my comics once I got home.![]() I had a friend just sell a NM98 probably a 4.0 for $150. Seems high to me. |

Seems like '91 is the cut off point. Makes sense for the NM98 and the few Jim Lee Uncanny Xmen books I've seen.

Quote:Originally Posted by Jesse_OThis list isn’t entirely reliable. The MJI’s appeared in Marvel titles from 11/72 until as late as 7/91, with DC ending approx. five years earlier. No Giants or squarebound books would have them, but MCS lists all titles from a given month as having an insert if any inserts appeared in other books in that same month. I believe ASM #349 is the final title with an insert, but MCS shows other titles from that month as MJI’s despite no known copies. Archie’s and Gold Keys will also have them(all ending pre-86). |

I collect them also. They ran in Gold Key for a few years in the 1970’s and ran til 1986 for DC but Marvel ran until 1992. They were sold on all military bases.
