Sharing my pain selling on EBay!12055

Collector Doc_Cop private msg quote post Address this user
Just sold a variant copy of Savage Avengers #1 on eBay. The winning bidder scored this for $1.25 plus $4.99 shipping (media mail in a Gemini Box, bagged and double boarded). The winning bidder took six days to pay and now is sending messages that I am ripping him off on the shipping costs! I start my bidding for newer issues at .99 cents and figure between the $2.80 media mail cost, a Gemini box, fresh bag and two boards plus my time equals $4.99 shipping. If I am wrong or not being fair to my buyers, please let me know. By the way I ship better books (keys and such) via UPS 2nd day. I will let the comic community voice their opinion. Nuff said.

Wow, what a jerk. I'd tell him you had the shipping price up the entire auction, he knew what he was getting into, and if he doesn't like it he can cancel the purchase and get a refund. Don't bother with buyers like that.

Oh, and block him.

How do I know this? Because I've done it myself. lawguy1977 private msg quote post Address this user
I don't sell a lot on Ebay, but in my opinion, that shipping cost is totally fair. Anyone who mails comics in a safe and dependable manner would know that. You're just dealing with someone who thinks Ebay is a brick and mortar store. And if he/she didn't want to pay the shipping, then they shouldn't have bid on it in the first place. It's not like you somehow hid the shipping cost.

@Doc_Cop

Yeah, $4.99 seems pretty reasonable.

I deleted some sellers because they were $6 plus and wouldn’t combine shipping.

I think if I’d bought a book that the shipping cost more than the book, I’d have tried to win/ buy more books from you.

@Doc_Cop you're completely fair...eBay is a necessary evil unfortunately, sorry you have to deal with crap like this....after this transaction I'd block the buyer...no time for nonsense like this.

I buy a lot on EBay, and figure shipping into total cost of the item, be it a book or whatever. The buyer SHOULD have looked at shipping cost BEFORE he bid, and figured it into what he wanted to spend on the item... Actually, as I recall, in the section when you click on "see details" defines it as "SHIPPING AND HANDLING"...the guy is a weenie... tell him you do not work for free, and "handling" is expensive...

Media mail in a Gemini mailer I wouldn't balk at that shipping charge. It's the buyer's decision if they want to buy a book that costs more to ship than it is worth. I assume shipping charge was in the listing?

Oh I blocked the buyer. It's a shame I can't write bad feedback without him returning the favor. He did try to win more books but lost. I explained I do oombine shipping plus $1 each additional book. The kicker is I paid $10 for this variant. I am guessing no reply to his ignorant comment is best. Thanks for all the in put.

I agree it is best to just ignore this joker. The shipping charge was clearly stated beforehand so he has zero grounds to complain. Stuff like this is just the cost of doing business on EBay and one of the main reasons I sell only very rarely these days.

Some buyers seem to think that there is some magical shipping fairy and does not consider that the seller must pay to transport the book to them.

@drchaos Amen to that! annoys me to no end that sometimes...many times, its assumed the seller should eat that cost. Shipping is a service...one that costs money.

@GAC

When I buy something that is make an offer, I’ll usually try to go for free or half price shipping, depending on the cost of the item and the cost of the shipping.

About half the time they accept and the other half they reduce enough that I’m happy.

I hope that doesn’t make me one of “those guys?”

I try to be reasonable in everything, but could inadvertently be a pain.

$4.99 is what I charge at my lowest tier. eBay will take .50 off the top in their fees. Then PayPal will chop off .19 in their processing fee. So in reality you only have $4.30 left. Figure that you will spend .50 to $1 in packing such as the envelop or padding. The cheapest first class rate that I can get is about $3.88, (without playing with media mail). So in reality I only “profit” up to 12 cents. Most of the time I “eat” up to a dollar. So your price is perfect. When I do flat rate envelope I charge them 9.95, for all those same reasons. 19.95 for medium priority box and 24.95 for the large priority box.

If the price and shipping method were stated in the listing, the buyer has no grounds for a complaint.

I've been dealing with a guy who keeps wanting me to accept his offers. The listings don't have best offer options on them. He doesn't understand that eBay and PayPal rock me with fees plus he seems to think that since I offer free shipping, that means shipping costs nothing to me.

You're not doing anything wrong. Guy sounds like a jabroni.

Thanks Studley and Naftixe for your respective in puts. I am going to predict this jabroni isn't happy and returns the book saying it came damaged. Just a prediction. I should have just cancelled the sale, blocked him in order to sleep better at night.

@Doc_Cop that buyer sounds like a real loser.
Do you buy the shipping labels through PayPal? If so, I believe you can choose to have the shipping cost posted or not when you print it out.

Now if he's bitching before you have even sent it out, then explaine to his ignorant butt the cost included with the shipping products.

Maybe update your shipping description to include the breakdown cost, like you explained to us earlier.

Yes I buy the shipping labels thru PayPal. I did not know I can hide the cost. Good suggestion on breaking down the shipping cost. What's killing me is all this effort for a $1.25 comic book!

Hey @Doc_Cop, why haven't you replied to my ebay message??? Sorry, just kidding and trying to bring a little levity. Sorry you are having this ebay issue. Your buyer is probably splitting his time harassing you with sensuously rioting.

I won’t break down anything. The shipping price is clearly listed and that’s what the buyer pays. I ignore idiots that try to “educate” me on the proper price for an item or shipping. If they don’t like then don’t buy it from me. I also intentionally do not offer returns. Sometimes I do allow for a return but only in very rare circumstances.

On auctions, they have 48 hours max to pay or I do a fee claim with eBay and then relist it only after eBay Refunds the fees. On buy it nows they have to pay immendiately. I don’t play wait games.

I was shocked on a slab sale that the winning bidder retracted his bid a day later stating he did his research and had bid higher than the value of the Avenger 684 CGC 9.4 and eBay said okay and retracted his bid! Has been a crazy week already!

I’ve been playing the eBay fee & scam ride since 1998. eBay/PayPal will almost always side with the buyers and leave the sellers high and dry. You gotta stick to your terms and be clear and consistent. Accept bad ratings when they try to scam you but realize that good buyers will read the feedback and see that you are consistent and fair.

My third account. The first two were deactivated by myself over the years.

I post flat rate shipping charges in my listings to somewhat deter people from buying a single $1.25 comic since the shipping I charge for 1-10 comics is the same. There is no way to make money off Ebay on low dollar items without doing it this way since paypal charges a minimum 30 cents plus 2.9% per transaction. Buyer's should purchase more of your items in stock to lessen the shipping costs instead of expecting you to make 25 cents on the transaction. Whoever purchased from you clearly has never sold low value items on Ebay or they would be well aware that it's impossible to charge actual cost of shipping, especially when you ship media mail since Ebay does not provide a discount on this service but will still take 10% of your shipping cost.

I had a buyer ask if the book in the photo was bent, or just an optical illusion. I explained it was a thin trade paperback, and they sometimes curve when I stand them up for the photo, but it lays flat in reality. Then he asked about the price, seemed too much, and the shipping was "more than most sellers, but admittedly less than some". I replied with links to comparable sales, and also that my shipping is a flat fee of $5, just order more stuff. Then he said if I dropped the price to $10 (from $14, which was already a good price) and lowered the shipping to $3 he would be "interested". I told him, "Unfortunately, I can sense that things would not go well with this transaction, and now I am spooked. You are bothered by the shipping, questioning the photo/condition, and I see a return or poor rating on shipping heading my way. I already have too much time invested in this back and forth over a $14 book. It's best if you find something similar from another seller." And then I blocked his sorry rear end.
