Is there any consensus out there on value differences between Newstand and Direct? I'm having trouble finding information on the price differences. I understand that as you get closer to 1980 the Newstands become more common. I have these Newstands specifically in for slabbing now or in the future. All are assumed to be high grade, maybe 9.4-9.6: Moon Knight #1 Micronauts #1 Thor #337 Batman #428 ASM 252 (graded 8.0) Anyone have any expertise or opinions to share? |

Some people care and some people don't, so in terms of consensus I would say no.

Check sold listings on eBay for books in question for direct vs newsstand. A lot of collectors find a newsstand book, in higher grades, to be worth paying more for. Batman Adventures 12 being a good example. It’s a niche thing, but it’s real.

Depending on the type of sale on ebay (fixed or auction) a 9.6 sold for about $180-$200 and that's for both editions. Now, the higher in grade for an issue can bring more of a premium. I'll be honest in saying that I'm not positive on the other books you have listed. If they grade 9.8, and you want to sell them, shoot for the moon. I've been finding that some of the newsstand collectors are willing to shell out for high grade (9.6 and up) newsstand copies. Personally, I wouldn't pay the premium because newsstand or direct isn't a big deal to me. However, I will pay premiums for UK and Canadian price variants, so I can understand where the newsstand collector is coming from when they talk scarcity in high grade. If you have newsstands, especially key issues), that come back super high grade there is a market. If not, it's like anything else. That's just been my experience in talking with collectors here, across the street, and in person. |

You’ll see more interest in newsstand editions starting in the nineties books. Not so much with books from the 80’s.

@dpiercy is right. Actual data is better than opinions - it is a real thing, look for actual sales data and price guides that support both. The others are correct too - it will matter more for certain books and eras. Think about the Marvel price variant issues - they are scarce and some collectors care and want them, others don't. For some books, the Newsstand Editions are quite scarce, others not so much. CBCS supports and distinguishes Newsstand Editions, so as the census fills out, patterns will emerge. For some books, there are opportunities to grab that coveted "Finest Known" slot, which is like printing money.
