Just got a few books back. Mostly to try out a new presser on the Pokémon and the Iron Man. Both definitely look better than they did but they still had some minor issues that could probably be pressed out.

As far as I can tell this is the first comic book appearance of Ash/Pikachu/Pokémon in the United States. There is a preview of this book that might have been released a few days prior but that depends on your stance on previews as first appearance. Also, since the label doesn't state otherwise, I'm assuming/hoping this is a first print (of 16!)

@dielinfinite Noticed your Iron Man has a check mark next to the grade. Is it that the issue could grade higher but there is something in the interior that is fixable so currently they are holding it to that grade?

@Cool_Fool Kind of but not exactly.

The official description on CBCS’ website reads:

The way I interpret that is that books of a certain grade are expected to have a certain general appearance, surface wear, accumulation of defects, etc.

In rare cases, the book’s unique accumulation of flaws results in a book that may sit firmly in one grade yet appear better than the accepted general appearance of a book in said grade

@dielinfinite Yep. I once got back a submission of eight books, all of which had the check mark. I had a few unpleasant things to say about said check mark after that.

@CatCovers So much for it being in "rare cases" as you had it on 8/8. Do you recall if they were graded a 9 or above and were they issues you had pressed? Looking to see if pressing made it look good but did not get a true bump up.

My guess is there was probably something unique to that submission. Maybe something that happened in shipping or the way the books were packed or stored previous to grading. My experience is the opposite, I've probably had 70 books slabbed by CBCS and I can only remember 1 check mark.

@Cool_Fool The results of one order really isn’t enough to judge how rare something is. In my collection only about 3.5% of my CBCS books have a checkmark across a range of grades and regardless of being pressed or not

If the viagra is working you should be well over a 9.8. xkonk private msg quote post Address this user
I think I had a few checkmarks in my first submission or two, but then never since.

It isn't necessarily pressable things, because you can see some things that are pressable (which means it doesn't look better than the grade). The notes on a few of mine seem to have a lot of little things.

They should be done this week, I hope. All except the VSP were in grading last week.

Any word on the progress?

@Studley_Dudley - All are still marked as being in "Grading" Mike. You can see my Avengers #24 on another thread - a picture of it was posted a little while ago (a first for one of my comics - cross another item off my CBCS wish list!). Hopefully they will make it to labels and shipping by the end of the week.

My 8 are done and being shipped back now. Almost a clean sweep. Seven at 9.8, one at 9.6.

@esaravo Ed you actually have some cool books you're waiting. There was nothing particularly exciting about this batch I sent. I still need to gather some books to send down before the end of the month. Just not sure which ones yet.

I'll be sending them out tomorrow, but here is what I have. I did two separate invoices because of pressing for a few.

For pressing:
ASM #210
Marvel Team-Up #65
Nova #1 pence
X-Men #107
FF #30 pence

Grading only:
Batman #567
Huntress #1
Transformers #17 retailer incentive
Avengers #71 pence
X-Men #125 pence
X-Men #130
UXM #147 pence
UXM #193 CPV

I'm just assuming everything is a 9.8, maybe an 10 or 11 in there too.

@Studley_Dudley - My ASM #210 has been in for pressing since September. Maybe we should make a bet on which one gets the higher grade?

Surely these had noticeable flaws that made you guess in the 9.0 range? Just something you didn't like about the corners?

You got a head start, but I put the fastpress option on there. Maybe they'll be done by January! lol

I think you'll get the higher one. You have a better eye for quality than I do!

@Studley_Dudley - I don't know about my eye for quality. I was a poor college student that would drink Generic Beer because it was $1 a six-pack, back when I bought that issue.

I guess I'll guess grades anyway. You sucked me in.

GSXM 1, 4 or 5
Avengers 53, 5
Fantastic Four 28, 4
Marvel Super Heroes 13, 5 or 6
X-Men 6, 5
X-Men 7 x2, one 5 and one 6
X-Men 8, 6
X-Men 9, 6 or 7
X-Men 10, 5

Not surprisingly, my grading was a little optimistic. Pics in the 'comics you just got back' thread.

I posted mine also. They ended up: 1.8, 9.2, 9.0, 9.8!, and 9.8. I try to be super critical on books that I submit, because there were many times I overlooked a flaw or two, and then I was depressed when I saw the “actual” grades. The SA 9.8 was a shock, I knew it looked real nice, but I guess I couldn’t see a book that age that I have had for so long, achieving that grade (hell I would have been thrilled with a 9.4 or 9.6).

@esaravo isn't that the weirdest (and greatest) thing when we can't see a 9.8 on a Silver Age book. Even though we don't see any flaws I think our previous experiences have conditioned us to assume there are grading defects that we aren't recognizing. Such a great feeling when once in a while that turns out to be an incorrect assumption.
