Rob Liefeld is a genius and a master artist.11878

Met Liefeld in NYC at his solo signing a week before Deadpool 2 opened. He came to front room to welcome the 50 early birds. He was "on" - engaged everyone, did a Q&A, laughed and joked and was the ultimate showman, he was ready to have a good time and this was his way of warming up the crowd. He did 3 cool things for me - Unasked, he signed my 7-11 Slurpee Deadpool promo cup. After our photo, I said i had more I'd like signed - he said bring and he would sign - quickest trip from City to Brooklyn and back! Now there was no one left on line, he signed and didn't charge so I gifted him 'Villains Need Love' Pin & Sticker set. He had more time so we talked 1/2 hour - he asked me about what i collect, showed some prototype DP's coming soon and where to eat in area - just a casual conversation. Others jump on his feet art (psst, Kirby hated ears) or Cap't America with boobs or some of his mouth dumps. He was true class in person to everyone, to me, and then he remembered "Brooklyn DeadPool John" when I saw him at NYCC 2019. So as a person & artist, Liefeld is genius to me ^_~ HavaTaco |

I won't attempt to judge his personality, because I've never met him, but I can judge his art because I have seen it. It's horrible. He is a talentless hack. His artwork appeals to the same people who like to watch pro wrestling, and think Ariana Grande is a great singer because she's pretty (never mind the Lolita factor). The people who like football for the hitting and baseball for the home runs. The uneducated fan basically. People who only watch NASCAR for the crashes, and hockey for the fights, who say Kiss is a great rock band because they put on a spectacular show, but can't play a note. Back Street Boys are great singers because they can dance. The simple minded, easily entertained average, or below, IQ human. Or anybody that says the Beatles were not one of the greatest, most influential rock bands ever.

@Donnied, to me it's not that good on TV but you should try watching pro or even amateur wrestling in person sometime. It's highly entertaining, although it helps to be extremely intoxicated. If I could go back in time I would choose to see some 80s or early 90s wrestling with Hulk Hogan, Macho Man and the Ultimate Warrior rather than the boring Beatles.

@Donnied When you start your day with a turd in your Cheerios, eat around it and try to get some cheer from your cereal and the rest of the day may be better. Poo-pooing on a proven, talented artist that you have 'seen' but maybe didn't really 'look' at because of your pre-judged animosity to his art. Attacking his fan base by calling them "uneducated" is forgetting these are comics, not art at the Louvre Museum. So just like some look at the Mona Lisa and see a weird chick with a warped smile - art is subjective. Your writing though is top notch for describing simpletons. Your mirror gives a clear reflection? Have a better day.

I definitely wont go quite as far as previous posts have. I personally dont care for his artistic style or its asthetic. It is a personal dislike for me, and I dont mind others that feel different. As far as his creative or writing ability, I dont feel he is particularly gifted...perhaps his greatest claim to fame, Deadpool, was basically a straight steal of another publishers work sadly. The constant re-use of certain plot devices like time travel, and Baby Nathan, Cable etc also grows tiring I understand others enjoy his work and all that and they are perfectly welcome..just speaking for my own views only. I find his refusal to sign this, sign that, and what appear to be termper tantrums, are divisive and counter productive. People can collect what they like or enjoy...I collect some books and genera that others dislike and I totally get it. When New Mutants 93 hit something like 300 dollars I gave mine to a friend. I gave my New mUtants 86 and 87 to the guys who worked at a shop I visited a lot. Just dont like the art or method of storytelling..MYSELF. having said that , the people who spend their money collecting that artist and his work just leave more of the books I enjoy on the table for me to get...that's what makes the hobby work. I wont be lining up to get his signature and buying his work...but most of you probably wouldnt want or purchase 3 entire sets of the fourth world trilogy books like I have either...so rock on peeps. |

So seeing Rob's work on New Mutants going into X-Force, I was a fan. Going back and looking at it again years later, I don't care for it. Some stuff is decent, but overall it's just meh to me. As for pro wrestling, when done well (not WWE), it is performance art and very similar to comic book superheroes. The forces of good going up against the bad guys with over-the-top characters and storylines. One is done in front of an audience, and the other is done in an art studio. Kiss' first five records + Creatures of the Night are good to great rock records. Kiss didn't need to be noodling around like Yes or Rush to make good music. The Beatles were just ripoffs of Judas Priest. |

This escalated quickly. One could argue this, that, and the other thing all day. I don’t care for Liefelds artwork, but if your work keeps people interested in comics or draws in new readers Everyone wins. An excellent example of this is Scottie Young; his work appeals to children and that’s awesome. I don’t care for his style; it’s too childish for me, But his Carnagized Deadpool cover makes me smile when I see it and I bought it for that reason. Not everything is for everyone and diversity is what keeps comics alive. |

@Donnied KISS is great for more than just their showmanship. They came into existence out of sheer will. Their punk rock style, DIY approach is to be admired. And their music may not be very technical, but it’s solid rock and roll. Tell me “100,000 Years” doesn’t rock. |

I saw Kiss live back in February...I saw them before on the Dynasty tour, and after that on the Crazy nights tour. They do make a lot of noise, they do put on a lot of special effects, and they do sometimes hit a sour note but..... I used to listen to their music in my first car, with my first girlfriend back when I was in high school..... There they were, throwing out music and doing the same things they had done for fifty years. I took a friend along with me who wasn't that familiar with their music...I noticed throughout the show she was yelling the words and dancing to the music. The thing I took away from it all was...there they were, doing what they always had. They were doing that almost all of my life...they found a way to do it through good times and bad, while losing members and through all the changes. I wish there were more things in my life that could do that...they have FOCUS. Somehow I think you paid Liefield a huge compliment comparing them to the "boys" …. |

I never know quite what to say about Rob Liefeld...I was a fan of his early work on New Mutants & X-Force, even bought the first issue of Youngblood when it first came out, but somewhere around that point I lost interest. He has an interesting style & can draw quite well when he restrains himself.

Liefeld aside, I've never quite understood complaints about comic art not being accurate or realistic. I've never seen anyone complain about Mignola, for example, and I'm pretty sure most people are not so jagged or angular. Women come in more than one shape but not according to J. Scott Campbell. I never knew that comic art was supposed to be realistic in the first place.

@00slim Yeah, that's old school...Kirby too was a proud cartoonist. Since that time I think the work has been elevated in the public consciousness and the term "cartoonist", too fans atleast, seemed less than desirable I'd say.

@00slim (I see what you see what ya did there. Made me laugh.) Not to my knowledge but who knows. Maybe someone wants to chime in about all the unwritten rules and start a thread about them. That way they won't be unwritten anymore and we can all follow them or not be suspect. That being said, my post was in reference to all the Liefeld threads that always seem to get start when the forum gets slow or calm. Maybe it is time to drive traffic with a Miller art thread or maybe both at the same time. That might be like opening the sixth seal Apocalypse - which brings on earthquakes - Yikes! |

Liefeld is always an easy target to pick on. The thing with Liefeld is unlike other artists who ignore trolls or respond to them politely, Liefeld goes Super Troll on them. Right, wrong, or indifferent he retaliates. I honestly don't know what I'd do if I was baited as much as he is by the trolls, so I cant blame him. I met him once through a friend who knows his manager. At NYCC we waved his manager down and walked to the front of his line, which looked like these early COVID grocery store lines. Liefeld was very animated to say the least and like @cool_fool he remembered my friend from 2 yrs ago. He was super friendly and charismatic in my brief encounter. While I may disagree how he handles himself, he really loves his die hard fans and kids. |
