Here is a link to a thread for storage boxes for slabs - some of them look like with some bubble wrap and tape, you could also ship them. https://forum.cbcscomics.com/topic/11075/page/1/storage-tubs/

@Kaplanthecollector - If it's 1 or 2 slabs, you can usually use a USPS Priority Medium Flat Rate Box, but you need to beef up the box and make sure there is some protection for the slabs on all sides - I use box-inside another box and add bubble wrap around the middle with foam on the top and bottom. If you need to ship more than 2 slabs, re-use the CBCS boxes that they use to ship slabs to you. They can easily be cut down in height and are pre-marked to do so.

On the priority mail, there are two medium flat rate boxes that are lsight different in size...and 1 fits into the other. I have used this for up to 4 slabs.

Priority Box 1097 fits near perfectly inside box 1097.

Someone on this board suggested this’ll few years ago, so it’s what I do. I use the USPS priority mail boxes 1092 and 1095, and the EP14 priority mail envelop. The 1092 fits inside the 1095. These are free and they ship it to you free.

I put the slab in the envelope and seal it. Then I wrap it in a few layers of 1/2 inch bubble wrap. It then goes in the 1092 box and gets sealed. Finally, I put the 1092 inside the 1095. I usually put some packing peanuts in each end of the 1095 to make a tighter fit before sealing the 1095.

I won’t put more than two slabs in this, and it might be overkill, but they arrive safely. One slab packed like this weighs about 2 pounds and it usually costs around $10 to ship in the east coast.

@HeinzDad see my two links above. Both boxes are 14” long. The first is 11” wide and 3” deep. The second is 10” wide by about 1 1/2” deep.

Hi, @Scifinator ... is one of those boxes supposed to be 1095? You list 1097 twice.

Maybe we are talking about 2 different Priority boxes but I thought the bigger of the two is Flat Rate at $15 regardless of weight and distance? The slightly smaller box is not flat rate and is charged based on weight and distance in my experience.
I pretty much always use the Priority boxes. Small bubble wrap on the top and bottom, large bubble wrap around the slabs. Start and finish the bubble wrap roll on the same edge of the slab creating a "fat" edge and a "skinny" edge. shipping peanuts or shipping paper to fill the small empty space on the skinny side of the box.

@Tedsaid my post should have read 1097 fits in 1092 box. Neither are flat rate nor regional boxes.

So, let me ask the group another, related, general question. Where do you guys get your bubble wrap? So far, I only use the stuff I get in other shipments. At some point, presumably, I will run out of that, and have to buy some. But the only time I've bought bubble wrap it seemed to be ridiculously expensive.

I'm thinking there must be a better way. Any suggestions?

@Tedsaid - I have bought large rolls of bubble wrap on eBay. It’s about 1/4 the price you would pay at Staples.

@EbaySeller
The boxes I use are not flat rate, so shipping costs vary from $10 on the East coast to ~$20 to the West coast. The boxes are free and I get them shipped to my house for free.

The ones you use are $15 flat rate anywhere in the US?

I also get my bubble wrap on eBay. My last order was for a 125 foot roll of 1/2 inch bubble wrap for $15.

I don’t really sell too often so that lasts a while.

USPS Priority Mail Medium Flat Rate boxes are currently $15.05 with $50 insurance (you can buy extra insurance - for example it's $2.85 for $100 and $4.70 for $300). So if you have a heavy package and/or are shipping a long distance, Flat Rates are usually cheaper. The USPS Postage Calculator and a decent digital scale are your best friends for saving on shipping costs.

If you Google "USPS box 1097" it will show you the box and dimensions below on a tab. You could go to the USPS site,it will work there, too. You can just change the box number to 1092 and 1095 for their sizes.

In order of size, smallest to largest, you have 1097, 1092, and 1095. With these 3, any smaller one should fit into any larger one, and still be under 2 lbs. if light packing is used. That lets it go anywhere in the continental US for $7.64 to $11.19. These are quotes using PirateShip.com, but probably the same with any carrier. Not Regional or Flat Rate, just by weight or cubic rate. It's insured for $100 due to being a Commercial provider, and additional insurance is $.80 per $100. I suspect it is possible to put the 1097 into the 1092 and then into the 1095 to triple box something expensive. That would likely increase it to 3 lbs., though. I don't have any 1097 boxes on hand to try it.

Medium Flat Rate boxes are more expensive. If you are using one as your go-to package, you are overpaying in general, and severely overpaying if it's a short distance. But if you had to ship 3-4 slabs to one location, it might be the cheapest method. The added weight would disadvantage the 1092, 1095, 1097 options.

I think medium flat rate boxes a just a bit too tight to ship safely.

I use plenty of bubble wrap (no cardboard), put it in a 1092 USPS box, and put that box into a 1095 USPS box.

It has been a very long time with many shipments since a recipient ended up with a crack in their dlab.

You guys in the States are so lucky, our postal system in Canada SUCKS.

I live near the border, so what do I tell Customs if I'm gonna cross over to ship some books, a) as part of a trade or b) part of a sale? Any experience with this? (I suppose I'm asking the Canadians here...)

I would most definitely use these USPS 109X boxes you guys are describing. They sound great.

Yeah, we really are lucky to have such a great postal system. I wish more people appreciated it. It tends to be the "whipping boy" for expensive and inefficient government programs, which is ironic. They haven't taken any government money since, like, 1980, and the only reason they've been in financial trouble lately is due to a mandatory change in their pension funding. And, of course, the huge recession we are in right now.

Hopefully, they will get the funding they need in the next pandemic stimulus bill.

Just a heads up that these boxes are not available at post offices (except the Med. Flat Rate). You have to order them from USPS.com. I suspect they don't ship out of the US. You would have to find a supply in the states, maybe through a friend or acquaintance, and bring them back with you to Canada (if you can??).

True! But you wouldn't want to use them from Canada anyway, unless you ship elsewhere in Canada, or some other country. In the US, if you use a Priority Box, you have to use Priority postage.

That is quite true @Tedsaid. I was picturing him driving over the border, going to a post office, and NOT finding the boxes he just heard about. What a bummer. And was also thinking that if he had someone in the States order them for him, he could possibly pick up that supply and bring it back to Canada. Then he could package comics for shipment ahead of crossing over to ship from a US post office.

I have used the longer medium flat rate box with one slab getting damaged during shipment. I actually believe it was a false claim by buyer to get a discount where they could get it reslabbed at CGC. I believe it was a Florida comic dealer near CGC. $20 discount was worth them not intentionally damaging the slab and sending it back. I asked for pics, did not receive them and blocked them from future purchases.

Yeah, they only carry the most common ones at most post offices. Sometimes they have a better selection in the larger ones, but I've never seen the 1095's there. I always order them online.
