Masculinity takes a holiday. EbayMafia private msg quote post Address this user
Last night we watched the Galaxy Quest documentary "Never give up Never surrender". Had to watch the movie again tonight after seeing the documentary.
Couple things I found interesting:
Playwright David Mamet named Galaxy Quest one of his 4 picks for "Perfect Movie".
Alec Baldwin badly wanted the role of Jason Nesbit (Captain).
Sigourney Weaver was not wanted initially because of her sci-fi background, lacking comedy background.
The Captain was supposed to be the surly resentful cast member who hated having played the role. The final writer said no, that's backwards, should be the guy who loved the role and wants to do it again.
Harold Ramis quit as director, presumably over the choice of Tim Allen as captain. Kevin Kline turned down the role.
Galaxy Quest now has it's own fans and shows, ironically.

anyone else see the documentary or dig Galaxy Quest?

Sam Rockwell has certainly made a name for himself since that role.

It’s a family favorite. My Dad & I saw it twice in theaters.

It’s probably the greatest sci-fi satire made to this day. A bold statement, but I’ll stand by it.

When it came out in theaters and my friends wanted to go see it, I was not excited. I wanted a sci-fi movie, not a comedy sci-fi. I was wrong.

What’s ironic is she had what might be the best line in the entire (outstanding) movie: “I have one job on this ship. It’s stupid, but I’m going to do it!”

Besides, how can anyone say she didn’t have comedy background? She was in Ghostbusters for God’s sake.

Sigourney Weaver Says The Original Cut Was Rated R

According to producer Lindsay Collins, Sigourney Weaver confided in her at a lunch meeting that the reason for the cuts was that the original edit had received an R rating due to the swearing and increased sexual content.

Collins was desperate to see it, but by this point the story is well into ‘he said she said’ territory. An adults-only cut of the movie may not exist now, even if it existed then - the rumours about the supposed R rating don’t necessarily mean that there was a specific cut that actually got rated R, and may only mean that such a cut would have received such a rating had the film been edited that way.

Still, the numerous abrupt edits - Rainn Wilson’s disappearance, Weaver’s sudden cleavage and those random, barely concealed dubs to conceal swearing do tend to imply that the final cut was swift and at the eleventh hour.
