I came here to find out what a "paper Bank comic" was. Was it shaped like a bank, did it have a coin slot? But I have no knowledge of how paperbacks are graded, or IF they are. |

CBCS will grade squarebound comics as long as they do not exceed the maximum size allowable by their slabs. The thickness must not exceed .24”

@dielinfinite How is that defined? Some comics are squarebound with paper covers, similar to the paper quality (quite flimsy for a cover). Some have covers of heavier stock (dare I say cardboard?), like a collected edition in paperback. I have seen 2 similarly constructed books, both squarebound with paper pages and cardstock covers, one called a comic, the other a paperback book. Do we go by what the publisher decides it is when produced?

Typically it’s called a trade paperback when it’s a collection of previously published issues, typically without advertisements. Squarebound comics tend to just be called comics. It’s not a terribly exact definition but the distinction is rarely very important |

Traditional grade and encapsulate(slab) “COMICS WE GRADE CBCS grades mainstream comic books that will fit into our holder. The maximum size is 7.625" x 10.5" and .24" thick. There may be exceptions for comics that are unusually heavy, even though they may fit into the size parameters. These are determined on a case-by-case basis.” “Raw grade”(sealed but no encapsulation) an option for all comics but is a solution for larger/heavy books that do not fit in the slab. “MAGAZINE AND TREASURE EDITION The Raw Grade service provides collectors with the ability to grade Treasury Edition, Magazines as well as Comic Books” My understanding is CBCS is working on slabs for these and will offer the standard grade and encapsulate services. For now this is the only option for larger books at CBCS. When in doubt ask them. They are quick to reply and have saved me time and shipping on a couple books I was unsure about. Grading services were very confusing to me and seemed complicated at first. Then like you I asked questions and it becomes clearer. definitely a learning curve for those new to slabbed books. For the most part its pretty cut and dry. |
