| These are the two front runners for my search: - House of Secrets 94 slabbed higher grade (with or without SS/VSP) - Swamp Thing 1st series slabbed higher grade with VSP/SS signature. The price I find for the two options above will determine which one I buy. Honourable Mention: Thank you to @BrianGreensnips for recommending Frankenstein Alive! Alive! I'm not a collector of modern books but this could be the exception. Its brilliant work that I'll probably pick up after I get a bronze age Bernie book. Thanks everyone!! |

The one comic I wanted to have signed more than anything was a HoS 94 but I had never replaced my old copy. In my opinion, HoS 94 is one of the toughest Bronze-Age horror comics to find in high grade. I looked all over and the few decent copies I could find were ridiculously expensive. Still financially recovering from my divorce, there was no way in hell could I afford to buy a high grade copy of the book AND be able to get it signed and slabbed. With only days to spare I'd already settled on a few other books to have signed and had completely given up on finding a HoS 94. One of my best friends in the world from my old home-town owns a comic shop, and although I know almost every book in his store like the back of my hand, he does acquire nice books from time to time so I thought I'd give him a call in a last ditch effort to pull a rabbit from the hat. He says, "I don't remember having one but let me look in my computer. I just finished inventorying all the back issues in my store and have them in a spreadsheet." He says, "Yeah, I have a copy. Hang on and I'll go pull it and see what it looks like." I'm thinking...6.0? 7.0? Nah...probably 4.0 or so. At this point, I'll just have to settle for what he has. He comes back to the phone and says, "Wow, this one was in a Mylite 2." Then he pulls the book out and says, "Wow, it has not one but TWO Fullbacks behind it. Someone really loved this book." Then he opens the book and says, "This book is nice. Holy shit, someone even went to the trouble of putting acid buffer sheets behind the covers." At this point, I'm on the phone in disbelief. Then he goes silent for a second and then says, "Wait a minute. Do you know where I got this book? When you were getting divorced you brought several boxes of junk comics in here and I bought them from you. This book was in there with them." I was completely in shock. He found my missing book! With tears in my eyes, I asked how much he wanted for it. I'd buy it back. He says, "Hell, I'll just mail it to you free of charge. It belongs with you." I almost sobbed. ...And now almost two decades later, that book traveled through the hands of two incredible friends, was signed by my favorite artist, and has an AWESOME story. I'll keep it until I die. My wife can sell it.   |
