This is actually a cbcs grading question. This was graded as a 9.8 but there is something going on at the bottom right corner. Is that a stain?

It's like the Roach Motel for comic collectors. chester15 private msg quote post Address this user
Sure looks like a stain of some type. There's another above the top right corner of the yellow "Welcome" sign.

What do the GRADERS NOTES say?

There is also a stain on the top right. Grader's notes are only listed on 9.6 and below.

Here's another for comparison:

well grading is based on opinion and if they say its a 9.8 then its a 9.8

There are guidelines but its all really subjective

@moodswing is that actually yours? Or a pic off-line? Reason in asking, it could be a buggie (magical nose goblin) on the slab, from the owner that took the pic.

@GanaSoth
Ebay listing. I will pm the seller and see what is up with the stains.

Could it be some sort of ink rub from the printing process?

I had no way of knowing that 9.8 graded copies signed by Adam Hughes weren't what you were looking for. drchaos private msg quote post Address this user
Buy the book, not the grade on the label.

I would just find a different book to buy.

Could be a printing defect. Sent seller a message. I will report back if I get a response. This is the first cbcs graded comic that I have come across with a fishy grade.

“NEARMINT+ / MINT9.8

This is close to mint with few minor defects
Interior pages are almost always off-white/white or better”

If CBCS determined those marks as a print error/defect; that would explain the 9.8.

If the viagra is working you should be well over a 9.8. xkonk private msg quote post Address this user
Since it's an eBay picture, could also just be something weird with the seller's camera/scanner.

These findings, which are not uncommon, drive me up a wall.
I am so tired of hearing the "well it's subjective" or "buy the book; not the grade" excuses. I'd actually rather hear errors happen. I can live with errors because they're made everywhere and in every business.

That said, there is a responsibility level with any company; any company - to provide the expected services that we pay them for. And pay good money for.

We shouldn't have to make an excuse that it's subjective so often; and we shouldn't have to make an excuse of buy the book not the grade. That's exactly what I'm putting my $$$ out for - so that I don't have to make my own assessment. Grading expert are doing that.
If there's a X% fallout due to mistakes - fine. Get to root cause and put in an improvement plan. But no more excuses that we just push aside as "well ............".

I've gotten the "light bends" nonsense that you can't even see without a Hubbel telescope; and this booger in the corner is "ok because it's a manufacturing defect". Oy vay. No - I don't think so.

Seller can't check the comic due to being at the store. Says it looks like the stain is on the comic but doesn't know how cbcs would miss that.

And in this case their opinion is wrong. I'll still be sending my 3rd submission to CBCS once they get back up and running regardless. Mistakes were made.

I understand this. Truly I do. And I understand there will be differences in opinion. We need to all allow for the 6.5 that we thought should be a 7.5.

That said, if this is a smudge on the comic itself, the subjectivity of this is a 9.8 goes out the window and I call b.s. That's just flat out nonsense. I don't know what seasoned comic professional would think that could ever be a 9.8. Again - if they made a mistake, no biggie. Put in corrective actions. Problem solved. But if we all are going to sit here and say we pay them to grade THAT particular book at 9.8 and their opinion stands because we pay them for their opinion, then this whole grading thing is one big giant scheme we have all fallen for hook, line and sinker. That is not a 9.8 if that smudge is on the book. No way, no how. Don't care if the printer did it or little joey eating his chocolate ice cream did it.
I'd like to see one person stand up in here and say... yep... I'd buy that at a 9.8 price. Aint happening. And it aint happening because we all know deep down in our gut it's not that.
