I got this email from CBCS in response to a question I had. I asked " will CBCS be extending their 5 dollar off VSP March special through April? below is their response. |

@sportshort - Thanks, but it's still confusing because it contradicts the CBCS home page that says NOT to send in anything for now.

They might have someone there to get things that were already on the way but don't want to say they're open and have people sending stuff that just sits while they can't actually work.

but the email states that "...you can send your books in!" without any exceptions listed. which to me means anytime, since they have a logistics person there monday through friday. the statement does not seem ambiguous.

We are asking if at all possible to hold off sending submissions until we are back to full operations. That said, we know not everyone will get the message so we are trying to have someone in place to accept any books shipping to Dallas, but again ask for you to hold off until we are cleared to reopen. |

CBCS is not open, and this is a mail-in signing that we have put together for you guys since all the shows have been canceled, or postponed.

Why does the email say that the aim is to have books shipped out by the end of June if CBCS is not open and doesn't know when it will be open again?

Any questions about the signing should be directed to Matt Edwards at medwards@cbcscomics.com

Or we can have an open discussion right here about why you guys think it's a good idea to promote this and keep accepting books from people when you have zero clue when you'll be open again. ESPECIALLY when you have a backlog of grading that stretches months out. I'm still waiting for a freaking book from August 2019

No, I think that's pretty fair. Worst case scenario: CBCS can't open when they expect and not only are all the existing submissions still sitting around, but now submissions from special signings are sitting around. Best case scenario: CBCS opens when they expect to and it looks like they're pushing through special submissions as fast/faster than books that were there before the shutdown. I think having signings and bringing money in for creators is great, but attaching it to grading with any kind of a date is a mistake (I understand that the email says there is no TAT, but then it says they're aiming for June 30, so....). Other options: Just host a signing and ship books back to people. Host the signing and ship books back with a coupon to have that book signed by that creator graded later at the witnessed price even though it will be a verified slab. Host the signing and keep the books for witnesses grading but don't attach any kind of expectations whatsoever to when they're coming back. Just stay closed and stop giving people reasons to send books when it's just going to add to an existing backlog. |

@TimBildhauser if CBCS closed on the 23rd, you're backlogged about two weeks. Completely understandably, but still backlogged. No need to compound it as far as I'm concerned.

@xkonk Would you rather we not have work to do once we're able to resume operations? TAT has been at 5 weeks (less in some instances) for quite some time now. Whatever shows up during the time that we're shut down isn't likely to affect that.

Current turn around is (was) 5 weeks or less for all regular submissions. Currently CBCS is NOT at full operation, so if your books are in shipping or any other stage this will delay their progress. While we are not at full operation, we are currently accepting submissions. At first we asked you to hold off, but with so many customers and submitters it was not realistic and we did not want your books being sent back undelivered. That said once we are back at full operations we have plans in place to make sure that all those books we have in house are shipped and that we are back to the 5 week or less turn around for these regular non pressing submissions. Pressing is of course moving to Dallas, and once we get back to 100% our goal is to get pressing to a much more respectable turn around time, and we will! |

@TimBildhauser @Darryl_H Can you tell us how many people are working together at the office? At least three graders, right? Plus someone to help bring in the packages that are still coming, data entry people...? How is everyone maintaining their health and not getting each other sick? @TimBildhauser unless I have a fundamental misunderstanding of how the TAT works, you probably have about a month of work to do, excluding pressing, at any time. Right? That's why the TAT is about 5 weeks? So presumably you had about a month of work to do when you shut down, and it'll still be there when you get back. If the option is to have a slow period when you start back up or to threaten the lives of employees, I would rather you have a slow period. |

@xkonk No one is working in order entry, grading or production right now. The volume of what's in-house to be graded varies considerably. There's no rhyme or reason to it. At times we might have 4 weeks, 6 months or 8 days worth of work. It changes from day to day, sometimes drastically. Also, take into consideration that, with a lot of people not working, it's not like we're receiving 1,000 books a day in the mail. The longer this situation drags on what comes in could potentially decrease being that people will have much greater concerns than getting comics graded. |
