Before moving on to April 1983 I want to take a last look at some of the highlights from the March cover dated issues. This was the point where the direct market really began to expand. Three different publishers debuted new lines of color comics that month! Warp #1 was the first First comic. I remember being so high on First back in ‘83. I really thought they were going to be the next big thing... and they were for a couple of years. Bill Black’s Fun Comics converted from a B&W magazine to become the first in Americomics’ new line of color comics. This was indeed a fun comic, although the artwork is slightly subpar. It’s something that, if one of your buddies produced it you would think it was awesome. Measuring it against the other comics on the stands at the time, however, it seems to lag behind a little bit in overall quality. Archie/ Red Circle launched their lineup of superheroes, reviving the company’s characters from the golden and silver ages. I remember buying Mighty Crusaders #1 off the stands and being very excited about the potential of these characters. Unfortunately the execution did not measure up to the potential and Red Circle/ Archie Adventure disappeared from the stands within a few years. A few other notable first issues from that month included: Journey #1. This series about life along the Michigan frontier in the early 19th century is one of my all time favorite comics! If you have never read it, you are truly missing out. DNAgents from Eclipse is another favorite of mine that had a pretty good run in the ‘80s and is worthwhile reading. Man, did I love the New Mutants! This book would even go on to become the first comic to bump X-men from its position as my favorite comic within a few months. Re-reading it now it doesn’t move me quite as much, probably because I am no longer the same age as the protagonists. Last but not least is Elric #1 from Pacific Comics. I loved the Elric books by Moorcock and these comics were a faithful and well executed adaptation of the source material. It’s a shame that Pacific didn’t last longer than it did. They were pioneers in the direct market and produced a lot of worthwhile material. The good news is that you can still read all of these comics, most of them for less than the price of a current comic. |

@Jesse_O There have been a few attempts to reboot those characters since the Red Circle days. Not sure Liefeld is the guy for the job 🤨. Does anyone remember the Impact line of comics? They were released not too long before I quit buying new comics. Legend of the Shield was my favorite. I was also fond of the Comet. |

I previously mentioned reading COPRA Round Three TPB and giving up early. I went back to it and I enjoyed it a lot more once I got past the early storyline. It's an independent that is borderline underground. It has a very homey and cozy feel to it. Less than professional artwork with colors that seem to be done by colored pencils. This TPB has individual adventures of the 6 members of COPRA. I'm not sure if any have super-powers but they all have some kind of weapons and enhancements.

I had a gift card so I got a couple of TPBs of Powers. I had the full Image set of TPBs, and just read the first one from the Marvel/Icons run. It's good; I would recommend any part of the series. For anyone who doesn't know the gist, it's about a pair of detectives who work cases that have to do with superpowers. There were 37 issues from Image and it looks like about 30 in the first run from Icon.

Into my fourth month of revisiting 1983. It’s pretty interesting keeping up with 70+ different titles a month. It is definitely a time commitment, especially given my 60+ hour workweek, but I was never one to care much for watching TV anyway. It is a very worthwhile experience I must say. Back in ‘83 I was probably following around 15-20 comics a month. I was only able to buy that many because of my Aunt, God bless her! She would have me over every weekend and indulge me in my hobby. I really wished back then that I could read everything that was coming out. Now I can, and I can’t think of any better reason for this undertaking. To be fair, I don’t have everything that was published in ‘83, but I am probably reading around 85-90% of what came out at that time, which is good enough for me. I think the biggest difference between how I experienced things then compared to now is that I was largely focused on superheroes back then, especially the team books. Nowadays I really appreciate the variety of subject matter that began to appear back in ‘83. Here are a few examples from my recent reading: Ms. Tree is a title that I have really enjoyed revisiting. I had forgotten how good this book was. The hard boiled detective genre is underrepresented in comics. The artwork meshes perfectly with the writing style in this comic to create a very effective overall package. Highly recommended! Neil the Horse is a comic that is really growing on me. I was somewhat uncertain after reading the first issue, but I find myself really enjoying the book. It’s definitely different than anything else out there. Jonah Hex is a title that I have been enjoying immensely since I have started my 1983 project! This was one of the best titles on the stands back then, not that I knew it at the time. Definitely worth a look if you’ve never read it. Coyote is a comic that I just read for the first time. I found it very interesting. There was a lot of information to absorb in the first issue, so much that I decided to take a break from my reading for today and let it all sink in. There are definitely some interesting elements, including Native American mythology and secret societies. I am looking forward to future installments. That’s all I’ve got for today. More to come in the future... |

Here’s a comic that brought back some fond memories: the First issue of Groo I bought off the stands. I also enjoyed revisiting the Rocketeer. This was a really interesting concept with stylish artwork. I know they made a movie out of it, but I was always surprised it didn’t go farther than it did as a comic book. This issue also contains a really good second feature by Ditko, who was still cranking out quality work throughout the ‘80s. I also really enjoyed Pacific’s two EC-esque titles, Alien Worlds and Twisted Tales. This was a solid issue with a gruesomely amazing cover by Wrightson. |

Read this one today. This was a really good issue during a really good period for the Legion. Keith Giffen definitely gave this title a boost when he came aboard. Not only his artwork, but his contributions as co-plotter made this book so much better. I think it’s interesting that DC’s two hottest titles at that time, Legion and New Teen Titans, both declined considerably when the artist/ co-plotter departed. Although an artist can be replaced, it is much more difficult to duplicate the chemistry when both writer and artist are involved in plotting the book. This issue also contains a free 16 page preview comic, Amethyst Princess of Gemworld. Does anyone else have a warm spot for those early ‘80s DC freebies? I remember my first exposure to both All-Star Squadron and Captain Carrot being in those inserts. While it is possible, perhaps even likely, that I would have bought the first issues of those comics when they came out anyway, those preview comics had me out there LOOKING for them! |
