Comic Book Market11497

Captain Corrector CaptainCanuck private msg quote post Address this user
Being a comic book forum, I invite those who are interested, to engage in a comic book discussion. For others, I realize that it is becoming increasingly difficult to focus on anything other than the health and safety of our family, friends and greater community and wish you all well during this extremely difficult time.

Many questions have been raised about the impact of Covid-19 on the comic book market, both new release sales and the “back-issue” trade.

Image Comics is attempting to absorb some of the financial impact by allowing retailers to return unsold new release issues, (à la the former newsstand structure). DC and Marvel are also being encouraged to follow suit.

Image Comics Urging Publishers To Take Hit

The impacts on comic book sales in the secondary market are also just beginning to unfold on sites like eBay and some large auction houses.

It would be interesting to hear from forum members about their thoughts and experiences with the recent comic book market in order to understand how they think the industry will be forever changed due to the recent and continually unfolding impacts of Covid-19.

One thing I noticed in the past week is that I’ve received offers from sellers for a lot (relatively) of items in my ebay cart so it seems sellers are understandably trying to move product for cash

@dielinfinite

Yes, I noticed the same. I like to “watch” books that I already have to see how they are selling and have received discounted offers from sellers.

I have had too many reasonable offers refused. I am waiting out the collapse as people hold their money for necessities instead.

I’m definitely keeping an eye on books but I’m having to balance out my comic buying/commissions with the payments for my mother’s new (used) car that she got last month and spending on a new lady friend.

Hopefully I’m getting a tax return (filed last month but I forgot a form so that’s delayed) and we’ll see about that stimulus money from the government that’s supposedly coming down the pipe

The recommeded 6 foot social distance is making it more difficult to have a new lady friend

I figured collectibles would hold their value or go up now, however with comic stores and shows limited or ending, EBay and the like is the market now. I expect more bargains with more supply. I know the bigger boys are increasing their listings now.
I seem to have stopped my purchasing for awhile, see how things shake out. Cash is king at the moment

2020 was do for a down turn, I dont expect recovery until February 2021. Coronavirus just escalated this, putting the election year flux at the front of the year during a time of american uncertainty.

People sometimes think comics are like stocks, which is a mistake and really a misunderstanding of their investment market.

Key comics are finite, like gold.
Comics are improve-able with pressing, cleaning, and restoration like a home renovation.
As a commodity, they benefit from yearly inflation, plus comics appreciate, not depreciate.

Comics aren't subject to digital sell-offs like stock panics, as the process of grading, listing, shipping, and customer receiving the product can take weeks.

Movie/TV delays will only add to a rejuvinated hype from a long wait, much like waiting 5 hours for a slide at Disneyland. Its glorious once you get there.

My comics have been selling as normal, and I dont see much of a down turn happening. Sure, there will be panic sellers, but it just helps to circulate books and keep the FMV accurate. Let them go crazy.

Just my two cents...

Nothing systematic, but the auctions I've been watching on MCS and eBay have sold for reasonable numbers. I haven't noticed a drop or increase so far.

For reference, I sell about $100,000 worth of books per year and November/December was FAR worse than February/March have been so far.

These are the last big sales on eBay in the last 24 hours. They seem on par with what I would expect.

Even the 4 before that in the last 48 hours look good.

I think the Modern and non-key markets could take a real beating though, over the next year I cant see anyone buying much of these at fair prices.

I'm finding that my watch and purchases are down because of the closed border. I use a US mail service for those sellers who don't ship to Canada or for when the price of shipping is much much cheaper to use the US address instead of my Canadian one.

That being said there is an auction ending in 6 days and a non descript misc short box I caught the left edge of a book that I'm going to try and make a run at. Shipping will be a killer for a short box of books but I may be able to get something for nothing as it were and just take the short box to an LCS to off load the other hundered books or so!!

What are they worth?
Are they future keys?

We havent really slunk yet.
If things get tight Moderns and non-keys should see the biggest hit I would imagine. More quantity, higher condition of manufacture.

People on decent fixed incomes will have more discretionary money than ever because there isn't much to spend money on. Right now would be a really good time to be a comic collector for a retired police officer, teacher or fire fighter.

Within time places like CGC and CBCS may be forced to take some time off as they are non essential work places. Also with no shows for the time being, the grading companies are losing submissions. Maybe even the auction houses will close for a while. E-bay stores will stay open as most are home based.

@moodswing I don't know if the modern or non-key comic market will experience a down turn, I'm just saying of all the subcategories of comics I imagine those will be hurt over others.

E-bay sales that I have followed have been consistent sales wise from earlier this year or last fall, however there was a downturn last fall with many major keys from the Silver and Bronze age. The books that spiked high the past few years are taking a serious pull back, however they are still at the price values of 1-2 years ago, they just lost there temporary gains.

Hey @CaptainCanuck and all - nice of you to send the well wishes. Agreed it feels odd to discuss, but hey, many of us are stuck inside, how can we not be curious how comics are doing, compared to the stock market, etc.? I have been watching this close and am surprised that so far, I keep seeing comics doing very, very well. Maybe there is a lag, but for now, sales are good. I even added a single-issue stock ticker to Nostomania so members can track how recent sales of their fave books are trending (presuming of course I've captured sales for those books). I want to be careful about not blatantly plugging the site - last time @moodswing got pretty upset, so if anybody wants to see examples I'm happy to simply post them here. I can throw a few up quick I guess. I suppose we'd consider ASM #300 a bellwether of sorts. While in general it is down a bit, you'll still get people scrapping and fighting over a single auction, maybe better eye appeal copy, not sure:

But books like Marvel Spotlight #5, pretty much gangbusters:

I was looking at recent Ebay sales for Hulk 181. Maybe the price was down a bit from previous but I was really surprised how many copies had been purchased in the last week. Don't know if this is a result of more copies being made available or just more buyers than usual.
