@HulkSmash Appreciate the offer. I could get things from Midtown, but I used to do that anyway and stopped when enough of my books showed up with dings from the mail. I also want to support my store. They do a lot locally (do a big FCBD, events with local artists, Halloween and other costume contests) and it sucks that they have to shut down completely. There are other back-issue places that will still be open on restricted hours just because they aren't located in a big gathering place (the mall).

I went to my LCS by work to get my pull list. I went last week too so I had only 1 book waiting for me. They had tomorrows books and were sorting them out. I wonder if they would have sold me the ones from my pull list. I did not ask though. It will be at least a couple of weeks before I get back over there.

Yeah, not trying to throw Midtown under the bus. I think when you ship as much as they do, and you get stuff as often as you do with a pull list, you just get some dings from the volume. My LCS doesn't get all the variants Midtown does but I get my reading material and I don't have dings at all.

New study suggests its airborne and for 30 minutes too: clickable text When the virus becomes suspended in droplets smaller than 5 micrometers — known as aerosols — it can stay suspended for about a half-hour, researchers said, before drifting down and settling on surfaces where it can linger for hours. The finding on aerosol in particular is inconsistent with the World Health Organization’s position that the virus is not transported by air. “Everything at the grocery store and restaurant takeout containers and bags could in theory have infectious virus on them,” said Dr. Linsey Marr, who was not a member of the research team but is an expert in the transmission of viruses by aerosol at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. “We could go crazy discussing these ‘what-ifs’ because everyone is a potential source, so we have to focus on the biggest risks.” “If people are concerned about the risk, they could wipe down packages with disinfectant wipes and wash their hands, she said. It is unclear why cardboard should be a less hospitable environment for the virus than plastic or steel, but it may be explained by the absorbency or fibrous quality of the packaging compared with the other surfaces.” |

Remember, every three days (approximately) the number of infected in the US is doubling. That means, every three days you have twice as many opportunities to get infected yourself when you go out anywhere. Also, you have twice the opportunity to infect people "downstream" of you. Perhaps some that are vulnerable. This also means there are twice as many infected now (Tuesday night, 9 pm) as there were on Saturday night. And four times as many as last Wednesday night. Also, a LOT of infected people are not exhibiting symptoms, and won't do for up to another two weeks. So, if you were starting to get a little worried last Wednesday, you should be four times as worried now, I guess? The Johns Hopkins website says there are 6362 cases in the US right now. The worldometer says 6468. I'll check back in three days, to see if those numbers are just shy of 13,000. And by April Fool's day, two weeks hence, it should be around 210,000 in the US. That's higher than the number worldwide right now, by the way (197,133). Also, it is estimated there are anywhere from 10 to 50 cases right now, for every case that has been confirmed / found with a test. |

Will that be based on some acceptable death rate? For example if the authorities announced that normal life should resume (for all but the most at risk) when the death rate gets close to 0.5%, would there likely be a lot of push back against that? |

Quote:Originally Posted by EbaySeller Well ... we can't do extreme social distancing for very long, with bars and restaurants closed, schools and universities, and non-essential retailers. In Kentucky they just announced that "any business that causes people to congregate should close. The specific businesses mentioned included hair salons, nail salons, spas, concert venues and sporting facilities. Community and recreation centers were also included." So theaters - movie and play and concert - are closed now, too. Anyway, it will hurt a lot, but we'll be okay ... IF we can go back to normal in, say, a month? But beyond that? I don't see how we could do that. Close most businesses? Stay indoors and/or away from other people? It has to be temporary. Fortunately, most people who get it do not die, or even get very sick. And it's almost certain that you can't get it more than once. So, after a month or so of significant measures to impose social distancing, I think they are going to have to relax those rules for the younger and healthier ones among us, with the expectation that they WILL get sick, and then get over it, and won't be able to spread it anymore. There is a critical threshold of uninfectable "recovered" people amongst the population that will prevent the virus from spreading almost entirely, and will essentially wipe it out. I don't know what that threshold is, exactly, but I do know it is quite high. |

Experience from Hong Kong. No businesses have been shut down for the past 2.5 months - but it is a different cultural mindset where people know what to do and not to do. This includes wearing face masks, washing/sanitizing your hands, keeping distances, not to sneeze/cough at others, staying home if any symptoms etc. at work we have had split workforce for the past 2 months. Some businesses are suffering though. Travelers to hk have reduced by 97% YOY so anything relating to tourists are suffering a lot. Many restaurants are downsizing as people go out less etc Numbers in HK have started to increase. Until this week we had 2-4 cases per day. This week we have 7-10 per day increasing to 14 today. 90% of which are people returning from Europe/US. |

Being told by family members that are doctors that nursing homes are starting to refuse elderly patients with the flu, i.e., test positive for the flu ONLY and have symptoms. That is keeping those people in the hospital taking up beds that a month ago would have been available for other patients. That becomes a problem if hospitals are stack with those patients and a large number of chinese virus/coronavirus (whatever you are calling it) patients roll into hospitals. You are going to have cross contamination issues and a shortage of beds. |
