@poka Optimistically, everyone knows their blood type because they donate if they can. I'm a universal donor (O-), the Red Cross can't keep their hands off me.

Well I am type A, the wife is type O. Hope she takes came of my comics!

@xkonk - Even with my A+ blood, I get phone calls and emails from the Blood Center all the time reminding me I will be able to give blood again soon and to make an appointment. There are four blood drives at my high school every year, and at many high schools throughout the state. With all schools being shut down, there will be bigger shortages than ever. Another ripple effect.

The first human trials with a vaccine started yesterday. Four patients received the vaccine at the Kaiser Permanente research facility in Seattle, Washington. Each person was given a different dose and will be given a follow up dose in 28 days.

Even if it is successful we are still 12 to 18 months away from it being available for the public.

AP Exclusive: Coronavirus vaccine test opens with 1st doses

Sorry, never donated blood and I have no idea what my blood type is. I've been in the hospital with many surgeries and IV treatments too. *shrugs*

Not everyone can donate (there's a scarily long list of things to check on here), but people should if they can. It helps keep people alive even when there isn't a global pandemic.

At work we use those devices to track our time, the kind you touch a fingertip and it reads your print. We use it twice a day- When we start and when we finish the day. Last night on the way out I saw they had covered each one around the plant with a note that due to the virus, the readers will be discontinued until further notice.

All the door handles and knobs, plus stairway handrails? No problem.
The Snickers Hole; It's not working.

And to keep everything in perspective (something our management LOVES to do), break and lunch room gatherings, plus working on the floor with everyone else is fine, but all Management meetings have been cancelled.

Gotta protect the important people.

Agree. I used to donate all the time. Because of my last deployment, I have a mandatory 3 year hold on donating blood. I'm a universal red cell donor (O-), and usually donate double red blood cells (3-4 times per year). I'd recommend donating for anyone that can. For me, I think it is one of the easiest things to do to help someone out. Plus you get cookies and juice afterwards.

I'll be eligible to donate again in about 14 months.

Maybe some good news from this preliminary study

High Temperature and High Humidity Reduce the Transmission of COVID-19

"In cold dry weather the basic reproduction number (R) of the new coronavirus is somewhere between 2 and 3—that is, each infected person passes along the virus to an average of 2 to 3 other people. Once they’ve crunched the data, the researchers find that a one degree Celsius increase in temperature and one percent increase in relative humidity lower the R value by 0.0383 and 0.0224, respectively"

"This result is consistent with the fact that the high temperature and high humidity significantly reduce the transmission of influenza. It indicates that the arrival of summer and rainy season in the northern hemisphere can effectively reduce the transmission of the COVID-19."

I am a genetically predisposed diabetic, meaning even though I exercise, eat healthy, dont smoke or drink ( technically untrue but they said 3 or 4 a year makes me a non drinker) and do all the right things , I am still diabetic these last couple of years.

I am A+ and still give blood at the VA twice a year. my respect to the rest of you donate. Your really are saving lives

I've been a bit slack donating blood. I donated back in Australia where you don't get paid it's voluntary.
First time was with a mate. We were 18 so headed to the city they took out a pint.
Then we walk outside the red Cross into the pub next door which had happy hour $1 beers for lunch and five beers each we staggered to the train station. 18 and very dumb.

Last time was many years ago and I went in and filled out the questionnaire.
Ticking no for questions like are you a recreational drug user ect.
Got to the last question and it asked about a certain viral infection you may have had in the last 12 months. I ticked yes as I had a viral infection thru my nervous system just six months prior.
Handed in the paperwork said I ticked yes to the last question so you probably don't want my blood.
Oh boy did they ever.
Couldn't get that needle into my arm quick enough.
Turns out I'd have a very high white blood cell count and that gets used for patients going thru cancer treatments.

Anyway been awhile I've never donated here in the states so don't Know much about it here.

NJ just shut down malls on top of the other stuff. My LCS is in a mall. They already offered to mail pull lists so I'll get tomorrow's books, but after that they put their distributor on hold. So probably no new comics for me until stores open again.

I think italy there are 31,506 infected and 2506 dead, which would put the death rate at 7.94% currently

@kaptainmyke From what I've read S. Korea tests more people and that has shown to provide a better picture of the death rate in their data. I believe they have a morality rate of around 0.6% - 0.8%.

Also, S. Korea uses peoples cell phone, credit cards and CCTV feeds to track those that are infected. It allows them to attack the virus, figure out who to test, and who to put into self-quarantine and then monitor them. (Much of that isn't going to apply in the US due to privacy issues). Also, they use the system to get people into the hospital when a bed becomes available and sending an ambulance to get that person at their location.

Italy is kind of the opposite and their hospital system wasn't built for the amount of cases they have in the country. They only have 5000 ICU beds in the entire country.

italy will be next country leaving the EU. the italians are furious with EU. for weeks they have asked EU countries for medical supplies - response has been - sorry - we need those for our own citizens. so if EU is of no help in a situation like this many Italians are asking why they are part of the EU

The same goes here for everyone. So many of you have sold me books and shipped I would certainly get any of your books and ship them to you. I’m not taking this situation lightly and going about normal business but I’m certainly going to the LCS. If I can help out feel free to PM.
