Two things that differentiate some of these from Covid-19 is the short timeframe from onset to death and the ratio of infection/death (for instance the flu is estimated to be 0.1%).

It's also hard to tell where some of those numbers come from. They have links to WHO and other sources, but if you click through there's no obvious connection to the numbers on the website. They could just be extrapolations from old data (e.g., there were N cancer deaths reported in 2018, and we're about 1/4 of the way through the year, so there are N/4 cancer deaths so far this year).

The thing that jumps out for ne is at least about half or so of the figures given are done by choice...people choose to smoke, or have an abortion, or to drink.
Flip side, I dont think most people would choose to have, or die of covid 19......which makes it a touch more insidious than something chosen by the person

The thing that jumps out at me is that the chart leaves off deaths due to heart disease 647,000 annually and that almost 80,000 people die from diabetes annually in the USA.

Nothing like the USA's sedentary lifestyle to damage one's body. As Arnold said put down the cookie. I'll add go walk for 30 to 45 minutes a night. Don't do it around people though.

After work I decided to just get in my truck and drive. I damn near made it to Indiana for no reason at all other than it was nice out. I pulled off the road at an abandoned house in the middle of no where to just chill and play with my phone. I wasn’t there 5 minutes and some country fella comes ripping thro thru the field along side of my truck. Expecting the worst I rolled down the window and he asked me if I was ok. Spirits lifted a random person was concerned, I responded that I just was looking for something to do so I took a drive. I told him I’ll get outta here and he said your fine I just wanted to make sure you were ok the flu is goin around..... 😐😐😐😐

How many of those Conan swords were made? Arnold has one, Liefeld owns one and Profiles In History auctioned one off.

Sounds like at least 8 badass swords and some larger number of more usable but less expensive swords https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conan_the_Barbarian_(1982_film)#Stunts_and_swords

It looks like we had over 74,000 completed test done in the last 24 hours.

I thought this was an interesting webpage. It is the hospital data for Washington DC.

@southerncross my wife loves salmon. We get the wild caught salmon when we see them. The smell and color are different than the farm-raised salmon. Tastier too. My dog approves.

I was going to say they probably are taking it a lot more seriously, washing hands and social distancing and all.

My experience has been NYC is one of the worst for the general public hygiene practices...I’m not surprised at all what’s happening there. Looking a lot like Italy now with patients dying in the Er waiting for a bed. It’s terrible.

Well for a start - everyone are wearing a mask!

So, as our resident expert on masks, what do you use? A simple surgeon's mask? A hand-made cloth mask? A 95n dust mask? Or something more sophisticated, one of those washable, reusable masks with activated carbon filters that you change out?

Any pro-tips, Keld?

@Tedsaid @Jesse_O @poka (I appreciate that your conversation caused me to look into what Taiwan did and is doing to make its population safer. I learned a bunch from it).

Taiwan learned from Sars. Thus, they took the information coming out of China seriously. They did a lot more than I’m providing here…

They started inspecting plane passengers coming from Wuhan starting Dec. 31. They bannned Wuhan residents on Jan. 23. They suspended tours to China on Jan. 25, and eventually banning all Chinese visitors on Feb. 6. On Feb 6 they banned all cruise ships that had a suspected case in the last 28 days from docking at their ports. They banned foreign nationals from entering their country on Feb 7 with travel to China Hong Kong, or Macau for the last 14 days. Using their national health data, on Feb 12 anyone with influenza like symptoms that test negative for influenza had to be tested for the C-virus. Feb 17 anyone arriving with a fever or respiratory symptoms had to be tested at their entry point and under go a 14 day quarantine.

On January 24, 2020 they stopped exporting surgical face masks and had the companies that manufacturer them increase their production of them. Then they took control of the distribution of them on Jan 31. Feb 2, they put soldiers on the lines in the factories. The goal is to produce 10,000,000 masks a day. Feb 3 the Postal workers take over distribution of the masks in the 6515 pharmacies in the country. People can buy 2 masks per week. Feb 20, children can now have 4 masks per week. Masks are sold at pharmacies and clinics for US $ 0.17 each. They don’t have the eBay/Amazon issue with flippers jacking up the prices on them like we have. (Of course, we aren't going to put/force soldiers on private companies' production lines, nor are we going to put US government employed workers in private pharmacies to distribute masks either).

https://focustaiwan.tw/society/202002280019

One should remember that China banned individuals from 47 cities from traveling to Taiwan on Aug 1, 2019. Also, they limited tour groups from going there in like 2015. Can't go into the why on that as it is politics but in doing so the Chinese Government helped Taiwan in the long run.

Education -

Feb 21 they issued the following guidelines for the suspension of classes...

1+ case (student or teacher) in a K-9 class, then the class is suspended for 14 days.
2+ cases in a school then the school is closed for 14 days.
If 1/3 of the schools in a township, city, or district are closed then all the schools are shut down for 14 days.
If a student or teacher is diagnosed in a high school, college, or university then all classes they attend or teach is suspended for 14 days.
If 2+ cases in an institution of any level then it is closed for 14 days.
