Hey all. Ok so I feel like this is a weak question, but my apologies, Im getting back into my collection. Where do you go to assess the value of your books. Im not looking to sell, but if memory serves, recent completed sales on Ebay tend to be more accurate than the price guides or any other source. Thoughts?

GoCollect.com has a good free service. Prices are based on slabbed sales though (and I think just CGC??)

I'd like to say I still turned out alright, but that would be a lie. flanders private msg quote post Address this user
GoCollect has CGC by default but you can refine the search to include CBCS. Also don't use gocollect's free service, the data is inaccurate.

@KatKomics

GoCollect also records CBCS sales.

Also, at times the data is listed in CAD instead of USD which can be misleading as to how much a comic sold for. You have to click on the actual data to confirm the type of currency for the sale. Most of the time this isn't an issue since Canadian sales are more rare. Also you can see the sales type, auction or fixed price, so you know how to negotiate with a customer who has access to the same data. At times they'll offer a lower price based on the fact that a comic didn't sell for as high as auction as it should have. This has often been the case with CBCS slabs that don't tend to attract as high of bids and many sellers have had more success selling CBCS slabs at fixed price.

You can see with the unpaid subscription the FMV is $270 for a 9.8 even several slabs both CGC and CBCS sold well below this amount in the last 90 days. At times you may even see the FMV at a much higher percentage than the actual data from recent sales, so it's best to not use Gocollect unless you have a paid subscription.

It's not to bad. Sometimes the data just isn't there. All sales linked to ComicLink for "original sale" doesn't work. They are aware of the issue.

or just look at MCS at the asking price people are getting vs completed sales on ebay and then find the friction point between the two ...

Further, doesn’t look like gocollect has picked up most of my cbcs ebay sales.

You can check out the monthly Wizard price guide at your LCS...Oh wait I'm dating myself! Just kidding I use Comicspriceguide.com for raw and GoCollect.com (5.99 per month) for slabbed prices. Nuff said..

GPA is a good source but if you don't want to pay for a subscription then completed ebay sales are a great free resource.

I think the sold listings on Comic Link will show the price as long as you are logged in (free). That's something to use in addition to ebay sold listings.

All books are worth $0

When you sell them they gain monetary value.

It's a quantum thing. No comics have value except for the moment someone sells them. Everyone's collection is equally worthless.

@xkonk

Why stop the logic at comic books? Using this logic, essentially everything loses monetary value until sold, not just comic books.

I was hoping the obviously wrong statement that 'everyone's collections are equally worthless' pointed out the ridiculous of the original post, but internet>sarcasm.

About the only place where I believe in the 'it doesn't exist' idea is when people complain about the market and their 401k. If you aren't retiring in, say, 5 years or less, nothing happening now matters. Your 401k is going to recover, and there's no point in looking at it if you aren't using it for years anyway.

Pretty much anything else that people might talk about, including comics, obviously has some value even if it's uncertain what it might sell for at some particular second in an auction. But someone always has to say they aren't worth anything, or they're worth what someone will pay, instead of actually being helpful.

If you buy what you love, then value doesn't matter and you can't go wrong.

@xkonk You mean something like that?

It's a quantum thing. No comics have value except for the moment someone sells them. Everyone's collection is equally worthless.

Even quantum realities most have Balance Sheets I would think.

@Darkseid - as well as intrinsic and speculative values. I'm a glass half full kinda guy, so I assign value to my comic collection mainly because I only buy higher grade keys at lower than FMV. Am I worried that my collection will end up worthless one day? No. There will always be a market for high grade keys. With that said, thanks for starting an interesting thread! Nuff said...

On (fortunately) rare occasions I might sell a book for less than I paid for it. It used to bug me, but my brother taught me; “Consider mentally everything book you own as if it was free, the money you spent is flushed, just like a burger you ate, so it is all gravy when you sell.”

I find it interesting different peoples collecting philosophies. I started collecting 12 years ago and my philosophy to start was to only buy lower grade keys because I then could own own more of them.
Since then I added covers I like and some Flash Gordon and older Turok stuff for no apparent reason. It’s a fun game.
