Which Artists do you prefer to collect?11354

Collector Jabberwookie private msg quote post Address this user
So, I've seen a lot of good books on this forum, and heard a lot of good stories.

So, let's do another. Which artists do you like collecting and why?

As anyone who has seen me post new books knows, I absolutely loved John Byrne's art when I was reading comics.

His Avengers run, the X-Men, FF, it was just a joy to look at.

I also became a big fan of Marshall Rogers. His Batman was amazing, and I thought he did a great job with the 80s Silver Surfer.

What about everyone else?

I'm a big Jim Steranko fan as well as Barry Smith and Mike Ploog fan. I love their attention to detail and I can see in their art work that they really have a love for their craft.

I collected Byrne heavily when I fell in love with the xmen in the 70’s then the FF. I’ve enjoyed many of the older artists for their style like Gil Kane’s perspective of looking up someone’s nose (weird), the angry mouth’s of Sal Buscema and John Romita sr (Cover of Daredevil 105 awesome)and the body articulations of Ross Andru with Spider-man. I also enjoyed the details of both Tony Daniel (Tenth) and Tim Vigil (FAUST 5 maybe a little too detailed).

There has been so many great artist over the years and that is what keeps me coming back for more (and the investment thing)

I actually have a few Silver Surfer issues (2nd series) signed by Marshall Rogers. I was lucky enough to meet him a long long time ago before he sadly passed so early in life

In no particular order...
Bernie Wrightson
Neal Adams
Mike Zeck (cover artist extraordinaire)
Jim Steranko (I've always admired his work but have really started warming up to it more lately)

While I don't consider myself a Jack Kirby collector, I do love his artwork. Still, because he drew so much of the artwork for books I collect, I'm kind of a Kirby collector by default.

When it comes to newer artists gosh there’s many. But Mattina, Parrillo, Sanders, Dell’Otto, Artgerm, are my favorites. Trouble with these is I buy them for the art and art only. Most of the time I couldn’t tell you what the story was..
On Golden age & silver. I love them all.
Sometimes I get involved with the art but I do so enjoy the simplicity of the stories.
They take me back to my childhood. I was a big Superman and submariner fan. Unfortunately when I left home so did my comic collection. When I went out the front the comics went out the back. Along with my Baseball Cards. Yup. Same old story. 🖖

When I was a kid I bought every comic that I saw that had a Neal Adams cover. I love the artists that created the fantastic Sci-Fi and horror EC comics of the 1950’s, talents like Wood, Davis, Karmen, Feldstein, Ingles, Crandall, and many others. Wrightson was a more modern horror master with his detail, shading, and ability to creat depth in his drawings. Who doesn’t like Steranko? And if you like good girl art, there’s Matt Baker of course, but how about Dave Stevens?

Jack Kirby for taking the artform to new levels.
John Romita SR & JR for their great take on heros and villians.
Ed McGuinness warps the perspective with his art.
Gabriele Dell'Otto is a detailed painting master.
Mark Brooks like his work on any DeadPool issues.

In the last 2 years I've come to appreciate and search out an under-recognized artist, Murphy Anderson (notice no one had him on their list). There's nothing glamorous or exotic about his art, just good fun art. Very middle of the road, very workman-like art, but his work makes me think of him as the perfect "Bridge" artist from the Golden Age to the Silver Age. If you said "what did Silver Age art look like?" or "What did Golden Age art look like", his work could represent both. The way that Steranko art could easily represent Silver or Bronze age. Once I discovered him I became intrigued because his name is not mentioned very often in talk of comic book artists.

So many good artists, but the below are artists whose work I am enamored with at the moment

Daniel Warren Johnson - his style is very gritty and detailed but loose at the same time.

Esad Ribic - his Uncanny X Force run and Thor run with Jason Aaron are phenomenal.

Sana Takeda of Monstress fame.

Those are my personal faves, but I have mad respect for Wrightson, Steranko, Frazetta, Baker, and others. Their covers are just not as affordable

Murphy Anderson is much more well-known for his inking, especially of Curt Swan’s pencils. Swanderson art is considered some of the best from the Silver and Bronze ages. I never think of him as a penciller, however.

@cyrano0521 Thanks, I didn't know that. I did see that in the 60's or 70's he had a Worlds Finest cover that was selected "Cover of the Year", not sure if he was artist or colorist on that.

Agreed about Jason, his work got me back into Spawn. His style matched the tone for Spawn. I hope his Killapelphia has a substantial run.

As a GA collector and artist I'm most impressed by the old masters. Not excluding peers of Rembrandt whose work is also greatly appreciated, I'll extend praise to artists Lou Fine, Reed Crandall, Alex Schomburg, George Rozen, Jack Cole, Jack Kirby, Jack Binder (and several other Jacks whose last names elude me at the moment), Graham Ingles, Wally Wood, Frank Frazetta, Al Williamson, Carmine Infantino, Murphy Anderson and Alex Ross. I'm not sure it's possible to explain what inspires collecting any specific artist's work, except to say I like their style. So, here are examples of the first three artists mentioned...

Lou Fine

Reed Crandall

Alex Schomburg

Original art: SF dust-jacket painting & cover recreation (Marvel Mystery #66) by Alex...

Kirby first and foremost (fourth world, Kamandi, Demon,), Steranko of course (x men 50), Murphy Anderson(original Zatanna artist), Harry G Peter (early golden age wonder woman) , and some of Mcfarlanes work( infinity inc, and Spider man )...and I have discovered I enjoy the female art done by Maer, thanks to a gift from a forum Member, Tedsaid. Oh and do not forget the Aparo work on Spectre in Adventure comics from about issue 330 -340
