My inner patriot and at times jingoistic self and ex-mil has no problem with the Cappy flag and actually like the public relations aspect of it. But there was my initial visceral reaction as I immediately harkened to some of Chris Evens' inane political comments. But I have to remember, that the actor is not the character. Go Navy! Hail Capt. America - (yes, I went there) |

I praise Chris for his outspoken comments and glad America has people with the strength and courage to speak honestly and truthfully despite the censorship and oppression so many feel it important to apply to celebs. Right alongside that I commend mark Ruffalo for his stand against climate change and its causes. Being an actor shouldn't disqualify anyone from the right to hold a position or state an opinion. Love the Ship flag as well....awesome

Sorry, not to offend anyone, but for myself, anything that comes out of the mouths of any hollywood people I dismiss because they are complete morons and hypocrites. They need to just stick to acting.

And then there is labeling and stereotyping ....people in Hollywood are a mixed bag but there are some who are good ....everyone has a right to their own opinion though.

@EbaySeller I agree with you. I welcome and enjoy different views, and I think it's healthy. Unfortunately Hollywood just likes to shove their opinions down everyone's throat, and if you disagree with them they want to shut you down. They are rich, out of touch, and don't practice what they preach. And many people especially the youth get very influenced. Hence my very low tolerance for the Hollywood crowd.

Unsure how anyone can shove an opinion down anyones throat..thats what the off switch is for. We all choose what we watch, read and view , for good reason. If you find something not to your particular taste change the channel, cancel the service or watch a different program. Hollywood also cant "shut you or anyone else down" ...they lack that control over peoples lives. Vote with your wallet...make your opinion known by what you buy, what you support and what you like..thats the most powerful way there is to affect all of it. People in Hollywood are still American citizens with rights too...free speech, freedom of opinion and freedom to dissent if they choose. You do not have to agree with or support what they say, but they do have that right....that's kind of the entire point of a free country. A nation where you can live as you choose, think how you like, express your feelings or dissent if you like. …. When people start trying to tell others how to think or what they can do that's the part right there where a dictatorship begins |

Noting how polarized our society has become, I've never been clear why any artist would choose to air their opinion about whatever cause as about 1/2 of the audience sits on the other side of whatever stand you are making by voicing your views. Why take the opportunity to have them turn against you and not support your project?

The polarization of society begins with the inability to understand most issues do not necessarily have a one or the other answer or "polar" position to take, and that most of things which "polarize" society are due to horrible lack of logic or higher reasoning...Sadly it all begins with the concept...the default or correct way for things is how I see it or how I think it should be and the wrong view is the opposite. Nevermind there could be hundreds of positions in between the two that aren't polar in difference or that what is being selected as the default might never have been so.... Applying that to things Chris Evans has done for instance....or any other celeb, they may state an opinion or idea different than my own, but that does not mean EITHER is correct or either is WRONG...the answer might be several choices even.... What is at stake is a country that is built on the premise there is freedom for all, of speech, belief, ideals, and pursuit of happiness. We all lose when someones rights are trampled, someone is degraded or beaten down for advancing a concept or idea that opposes our own safe place position. |

Freedom of speech only applies to the government not being allowed to trample on that freedom. It doesn't mean that an entitled celebrity should feel that his/her fans can't turn their backs on them if they don't agree with what they say or do. Those fans are exercising their rights to their pocketbooks. To not realize that about 1/2 the people in the US aren't going to line up behind your stance on x, y, or z really speaks to how sealed into whatever bubble that celeb lives within. The above is in reference to taking a stand on either side of the spectrum. The "cancel culture" is alive and well on both sides. |

Freedom of speech applies to all that live within this country period. I have it, and everyone else does too. The government is only one of many entities both public and private that are required by law to respect that value. As for celebs, having an opinion does not make them entitled..they had entitlement to speak and exercise that right by our laws. Noone I have seen has stated people cannot turn their back on a celeb if they disagree with what they say or do, and conversely noone is also allowed to disparage those who agree with a said celeb's take or action as well..its again, a two way street for all. Fans are welcome to exercise their rights via their wallets, that's the way it works. To not realize that about 1/2 the people in the US aren't going to line up behind your stance on x,y,or x, really speaks to how sealed into whatever bubble that half lives within. (By definition literally if about half do not, then arguably at least half do right?) The above is of course in reference to what it refers to...using labels and stereotypes isn't particularly useful or constructive at any level. |

Generally, freedom of speech only applies to a person being able to express and idea or thought without local, state, of US federal government being able to censor them. That's why social media platforms, businesses, places like this forum are allowed to edit and delete posts written on them. They own the platform and can do what they want on them as they set the rules. |

You asked why a person would risk alienating his / her audience to make a point. A person who truly believes in a point will make that sacrifice because that is staying true to themselves. Money is not everything. I'm not sure how else to explain it. |
