Did his parents hate him or were they so undecided on a name that they just mashed them together? Personally, they should have stuck with Martyr, but Pablo is nice too....

Imagine if you could have gotten him to sign his full name on a comic before he died in 1973? Tne entire cover would have been obliterated by his signature!

I almost bought a Picasso sketch years ago but after reading he an Salvador Dali were the to most counterfeited artists out there. I passed because I needed to have it verified by a actual Picasso authenticater The seller wouldn’t pay for the authentication before I paid. So I passed. ![]() |

Nothing they did could be judged anymore on it's own merits; if it was a Dali or a Picasso, it was valuable. Like some comic artists but much more extreme... a Picasso signature, even in his day, could easily be worth thousands. So, they both came up with different ways to deal with that situation. Picasso, by never signing his name at all. He just stopped. He even stopped writing checks, because people would never cash them. The check's signature was always worth more than the amount on it. (Nice problem to have, eh?) Dali came up with a different solution. He decided to "counterfeit" his own work. He got a cheap printing press and churned out thousands and thousands of copies of every etching he had. Dali had over 150 ways of signing his name, so that authentication became (he hoped) very difficult. By doing this, he expected the "value" of his prints, any of his prints, to crater; and therefore, only people who liked them would buy them. It worked for awhile. I have one beautiful Dali print, and it's authentic, but it sells now for something in the $300-$400 range. It's not a Picasso, but it ain't small potatoes, either. ![]() [edit later] FYI, you can sometimes find this one very cheap. I just saw one online for $113.30. Might be worth getting. Okay, the image won't upload, so here's a direct link: https://s.yimg.com/aah/gallerydirectart/salvador-dali-restrike-etching-signed-in-the-plate-don-quixote-16.png |
