Finally the big guns... This #16 made it to Steve's cool books thread.

After not getting a GSX 1 for a long time because of how pricey they are, I managed to win two in separate auctions that closed around the same time. At least I was right that this one was in better shape than the already-graded one that I sold.

@Studley_Dudley Thanks! Going to be sending in my X-Men here and there over time to see where I'm at and what needs to upgrade (besides all of them, right? ). The sale was great because these early ones are too old to use a 2-day modern coupon.

It is also the first SA book that I have submitted to hit the 9.8 mark. Pretty cool and absolutely crazy for a 54 year old comic book that I have owned for probably 35 to 40 years! And no, I never had it pressed.

That is an amazing Avengers #24. Very nice Ed.

@BrianGreensnips - Thanks, that surprise made my year! It also makes me wonder if I have any other hidden gems in my old long and short boxes just waiting to be graded and perhaps make their way to Borock's thread.

@esaravo Thanks Ed! I still need 1 through 4. I've been slowing that down a bit by also getting 9.8s on some of the more attainable books. It feels easy to do because you can get a random Uncanny in the mid/upper 100s for $80 or less, and when my eBay sales add up enough I can pop off one of those. On the other hand, if I just saved that money I would probably have one of the first four! And then there are the splurges.... comic collecting is hard.

@Johnnylray - Thank you , Ray. I still have some books for you. Only 2 weeks left until Summer Vacation. Do I need to take another ride out to your place? Or should I mail them?

I think these were support the hobby submissions. I can think of three that are going back for a CPR. New slabs are nice. Perforations are more hidden but think the darker blue at the top is also more hidden. Thicker, but don't feel clunky. Need new bags because the ones that came on the slabs kinda suck. Other than that, I like the slabs, and prefer the original label. Nothing from this group was pressed, so I need to get my eyes checked again. When I looked at the notes, there were plenty of pressable defects on some.

Avengers #71 was a pleasant surprise. I was thinking somewhere in the 7.5 or 8.0 range.

Disappointed in myself for not seeing the defects when I inspected. CPR candidate 1.

CPR candidate 2.

CPR candidate 3.

As you can see, I was a little off in my predictions of all 9.8, 10, and 11 grades.

Did this ever get fixed? It's a pretty big mess up especially if that tear and fold wasn't there to begin with.

i emailed cbcs, they sent me a shipping label, but it was right about the big shutdown so I didn't send it. Still need to get it taken care of. Thanks for checking

Was that tear there before you sent it in? I hope they still take care of it once you get it sent to them. It sucks what happened to your book.

@50AE_DE this is a picture of the book the day before I Shipped it to cbcs. If you zoom I there is a tear going side to side. Looks like it got caught on the bag and tire it downward. The additional tear wouldn't make a difference on the grade so not too worried about it. The only reason I got it slabbed is because it's a Canadian edition and I have a graded 7.5 Canadian edition too. Things happen, thank God it was son a book like this. If it was my hulk 1 or something like that, then I would probably be upset.

Way back in September of 2019, CBCS ran a Spider-Man promotion. So I submitted a handful of books for regular grading, and a separate order of just 5 books for pressing and grading. I had been thinking about pressing for a while, and thought that the promotion would make it more affordable. So I picked out a SA ASM and 4 BA/CA ones to submit for pressing and grading. After 9.5 months or so, I received them from CBCS yesterday afternoon. They are in the new slabs, so that helps smooth out the long wait (I expected about 6-7 months when I submitted the order). The non-pressed order was completed in about 5 weeks.

Here are my observations on the books I had pressed by CBCS.

ASM # 78 - I thought this book had some wear, minor defects, and some dents/bends that would put it's condition in the 7.0 range. I hoped it might press to an 8.0. It received a 6.5 after pressing.

ASM #194 - A mid-grade copy with some obvious spine ticks, I thought it was a 5.0 before pressing. It received a 6.5, so in this case, pressing seems to have been worth it.

Another ASM #194; I thought it was an 8.0 before pressing. It received a 9.0, so I am pretty happy with that grade for this comic.

ASM #210 - Not perfect, but I bought this Newsstand Edition when it was new and on the stand. I thought it was a 9.0 before pressing. It received an 8.5, so I am a little disappointed.

The last book is ASM #265. I thought this book was already high grade, probably a 9.4, maybe even a 9.6. I was hoping pressing would get it to a 9.8. Bingo.

So 60% of the books got better grades than I thought they would have received without pressing. The two that received lower grades, were a half-point below what I perceived as their unpressed grades. Overall, I am satisfied with the results and love the new slabs. In the future, it appears to me that pressing works best on getting high grade books to their highest potential. Something for me to consider if I go that route again. Any thoughts?

@esaravo

I've been pleasantly surprised by their pressing with one exception. They pressed a CBCS graded book after I submitted for screen and it turned out the same grade. I figured it was a fluke.

Personally I like the one stop press and grade. I dont want to send to other places. Once they have their TAT under control it will be awesome.

I literally just submitted some books for screen and press. However I did it with fast press. I submitted it because I have faith in the pressing abilities. The TAT, not so much

@esaravo I get most books pressed by "Joey Pancakes" but for the sake of not having my books travel via mail so much, I have sent my last couple pressing orders to CBCS. I've started doing the fast press option but that gets a little old after a while. I'll probably go third party again until the TAT for CBCS pressing gets better. Overall I've been happy with the press jobs. It really depends on who you go to but I think it helps the appearance. Just like ironing your slacks.
