CBCS: Comics You Just Got Back11148

Sportshort, we are lucky here, we have a guy right down the street from us that does house attic cleaning for a living. When he has collected enough stuff he has huge yard sales, perhaps four or five a year. Sometimes we get lucky and he gets some comics or other cool stuff. My wife once found me an original Dungeon & Dragons box set there! Have to get there real early though, as all the dealers are there first thing taking all the good stuff.

Yard Sales in general are hit and miss. A lot of people at yard sales now ask retail collectors prices for their collectibles. Hard to find a beat up ASM #1 at a yard sale for 50 cents!!!

Yard sales are the final frontier for incredible finds at almost steals. I've obtained major keys over the years.
It is becoming harder and harder though every year as comic guys are realizing this is the place to go.

@xkonk I always look...I don't have the will power to not look lol!

To me, it's still exciting to see my books even when I know the grades. I like the look of the books in a slab.

@xkonk I haven't looked at the grades for the last few orders I had come back. I've been pleasantly surprised by the results.

I sent these 3 books today...Slab Only/VSP. Fingers crossed they pass.
The books themselves have no value but the signatures have meaning for me as they're old school heavyweights.

The Cap Reborn books are signed by John Romita Sr....you can't tell in the pics.

My daughter said "surprises are the best", so I think I'll wait until Saturday as long as they'll be in time. If they run late I'll take a peek.

got these back today. I thought the eye would 9.6,, KO I thought would grade 3.0-3.5, marvel super action thought it would grade 5.0-6.0 and the wolverine I was hoping for a 9.6. So 3 out of 7, I suck at guessing the grade

Got back two big purchases from the fall.

This one was by far the best price I've seen go by on eBay, and it doesn't come up too often since it's rare. So I didn't have high expectations about the grade per se and I am super excited it came back as a 9.8.

This was the first reasonable price I saw going by on eBay for the condition it was in. I am less excited that it came back conserved, but better conserved than restored I suppose.

Sunday Fed-Ex delivery - how can you beat that? Back in November, CBCS ran their CRYSTAL CLEAR promo where you received a discount on grading if you submitted books already graded and slabbed by CGC or that "Other" company. So I rounded up 4 CGC slabs - 3 had cracks and 1 was in the "bad" slab) and 1 "Other" slab and sent them in at the end of November. I must admit that I was a little nervous about if the grades would change (as in go down), but took the gamble anyway. They came back today looking great in the new, much-improved CBCS slabs.

Is anyone interested in how the new grades compared to the old grades? Well 3 grades stayed the same, 1 grade went down, and one grade went up. Care to guess which one went down and which one went up?

Okay, here's the first slab with the before and after:

Now some X-Men (naturally). I kind of hated to submit this one, because I liked the look of old CGC red label (that's really why I bought it in the first place). Same grade, but better page quality.

The biggest surprise (the "Other" guys had this at 9.4 OW/W - and when I bought it, I took a long look at it and agreed with it).

The disappointment - I should have had this pressed, as there is a faint fold line/light crease along the lower right part of the front cover. You can't win them all, and yet another check mark. The crack was very minor, but there were some scratches on the case too (and I didn't like how it scanned).

This is the book that I worried about the most. Not only was it the most valuable, but it was in the CGC creep-engine "Frankenslab" when I bought it about a year and a half ago. I hoped that it wouldn't drop much, if at all, but you never know. In the end I sent it in because I wanted to save the book from potential damage from the "bad" case, even if it cost me a grade drop.

Some observations:

1) The new cases are the best!
2) No foam pad between slabs again - was that only temporary, or maybe they ran out?
3) The X-Men #67 and SS #4 are thick slabs - they barely fit in the plastic sleeves - it was almost impossible to remove the slabs without damaging the sleeves.
4) Buy the book and not the label. If the book looks good to you, even though it is in the "wrong" label, and if you can get it for a fair price, it could be worth the risk.

With regards to Observation #3, I have switched from using Hot Flips CGC Standard Size Flip-N-Stick graded bags (way too tight for the new slabs) to BCW Graded Comic Book Bags that are 9" x 14" with resealable closure. Even the thicker slabs fit nicely in them (they are 2 mil Polypropylene and fairly cheap to buy).

@esaravo Great books Ed!! Love the new slabs...they are the best slabs by far on the market right now. I sent about 10 books to re-holder just because of the new slabs.
Your books look awesome in there!!
