Best Price Guide Suggestions11136

Collector mscheel15 private msg quote post Address this user
OK. I have a rather large collection dating back to the mid-sevnties (Bronze Age) to around 2006 (when I stopped buying anything new because Brian Bendis and Joe Quesada ruined comics). I would like to start valuing and selling a lot of this stuff now. I have lots of questions and I know the process will be daunting. So my first question is, what is the best place to determine the true market value these days. I guess I'm referring to what collectors now call "raw" comics. It would seem that only being published once a year, The Overstreet guide can't possibly be relevant or keep up with a speculative market that seems to be changing weekly. Should I get a current copy or go with one of the on-line sites? I'm sure I have a lot of stuff that could maybe stand to be graded and slabbed prior to sell but I'm not anywhere near those questions yet. Any advice to get me up and running would be appreciated.

I would say that if you have an existing price guide, even if it's out of date, to use it to identify the key issues. From there use ebay completed auctions to see what they sold for and use that to determine if they should be professionally graded.

I dont deal with "raw" books so I dont know how to address the books in that state, but generally speaking, if you have the books graded you have a better chance of selling them vs people taking your word on the condition. (No offense meant. 3rd party grading is generally more widely accepted as being closer to actual grade than most folks guesses)

Good luck

Oh. By 3rd party I mean CBCS or CGC. I'd stay away from the others.

The Comic Book Price Guide has always been the go to book, but prices obviously fluctuate. There is no true value to go by IMO. Look at what other sites like mycomicshop.com & eBay are currently selling comics for...it's not always accurate but it reflects the current trends. FYI, anytime a character appears in a film or tv series look for a 1st appearance to jump ridiculously in value! Yeah, makes no sense, but the market these days are crazy as f**k!

If the viagra is working you should be well over a 9.8. xkonk private msg quote post Address this user
In (my own) rough order of accuracy/usefulness:

dreckcheck.com
gocollect.com
ebay.com (search for completed/sold listings, not currently for sale numbers)
mycomicshop.com (check both what you would have to pay to buy from them and what they would pay you to buy it from you; actual price is somewhere in the middle. ignore anything for sale on a yellow background because it's being consigned for someone who can put the price at whatever crazy number they want)
comicbookrealm.com (very comprehensive but pricing is likely wrong; use as a last resort if you can't get a number from the above options)

Like @Bronte said, using some other resource to pick out your keys first could be useful. I use my list when trying to price a book I know that I'm trying to buy or looking to get rid of.

I use GPA, check ebay completed, then also look at what people are asking for various things in various grades at Mycomicshop.com. I avoid Gocollect like the plague personally

@mscheel15 Welcome aboard. If you frequent this forum for awhile, you will be caught up to speed quickly. I stopped buying the Overstreet Price Guide about 2 years ago. I do like the articles and the Market Report even though it is outdated by time you read it. But a lot of the older books do not fluctuate a lot in price especially if they are not a key book with a 1st appearance.

I dont like how they gather their sales data, using mechanical means, and its failure to sort out sales from ebay that are questionable for instance. Notice in all the links for ended sales for instance how many are dead and unverifiable links ….to that end generally they produce a much higher trending point for in vogue books in particular , than they are actually or even factually selling for realistically. I have spent some time looking at sales threads here and comparing to offered prices on MCS for same books, same grades etc, as well as comparing to documented sales using GPA and for two services that claim to use actual sales data they tend to be miles apart, with GPA generally scoring nearer to what books actually sell for any given week at MCS auctions by example.

Those are my observations, others mileage may vary...or it might have to do with my being primarily a silver age collector, but that's it in a nutshell.

The current situation with price guides is rather similar to the mid eighties early nineties time period. We have always had the Overstreet, but generally even before its released the information is dated.

Enter the Wizard, and CVM...or affectionately known as the "Comics Vascular Monthly" Between the two a lot of hyping certain books went on.

We had three local shops....the first bought and sold by the Overstreet, and was a fun place to do business. The second Bought by Overstreet pricing but sold at CVM prices...and the third....Atomic Comics....dude was outright caught using an older Overstreet inside a newer cover, trying to buy a collection.

The Overstreet is priceless for learning issue dates, the number of issues in a title, or who wrote this or drew that, but as a pricing structure runs so far behind and is so convservative as to be almost irrelevant.

Thanks to all for the input. Dreckcheck and Covrprice.com are new to me but I will check them out. I am familiar with Gocollect and Mycomicshop. I'll start digging deeper. Looking forward to posting some books on the "grading help" forums here. I've been "lurking" CBCS for awhile & find their members quite engaged and informed. Have also been stalking the other sites (CGC etc) but have always liked this one best.
