I've been looking for something better than a cardboard box to store my slabs in, and found these tubs made by Hefty. They are well-built and inexpensive, and will hold about 25 or 26 slabs. I cut a piece of cardboard to put inside at the bottom so they slide better for sorting. I found the semi-clear ones at Target a month ago, for $8.99, and today I found the gray, opaque ones at Lowes, for $ 9.99. They are both the same size. I like the gray ones better, and wish I had found them first. I like the size, for the weight, that comes out to a easy amount to carry, and fit in my metal storage cabinet perfectly also.
I saw the boxes that are sold by the comic supplies company, and they were really nice, but $60 is too extreme for this cheapskate.

The storage bins are definitely in my price range, thanks for a great alternative to what I’m currently using.

No kidding man, those look pretty nice. And I can get them in town! I try to buy anything locally I can but so often we turn to the interwebs.

I was concerned that the short boxes I have might not be strong enough for Hardcovers so I picked up some bins from BJ's wholesale.

The two pack is normally $11.99 but is $2 off. I bought two of them fo a total of four bins.

They are still in the car so I am not sure how the books will fit just yet.

All I know is that while they are nice I’m not going to pay for another bcw plastic graded box.

I eventually will buy the BCW black plastic graded ones as I am pretty sure I can get them at wholesale, but last time I checked wholesale price was around $16, and retail was $25, unsure what you were referring to when you said you saw them for $60. Was that for one BCW graded-size comic bin? That seems extremely high for one box, but if these Hefty works well enough, I would agree the $10 price tag is quite nice.

You have that WW issue sitting in that box and you cheap out on supplies for storage? I’d be more careful about storage materials and how breatheable things are...

I'd like to say I still turned out alright, but that would be a lie. flanders private msg quote post Address this user
I've read that stacking books horizontally instead of vertically is the best option for long term storage. Maybe there is a tub out there that has the dimensions to fit two stacks of slabs laid horizontally.

Yeah I would be concerned with what is contained within the plastic and if the books could breathe properly
Cyrano called it

Also any type of gasses that the plastic tubs may emit over time, if they do at all, could be harmful to the comics. I may be way off on thinking that though....

@Kinsella5 Most people don't have the option to get BCW's boxes at wholesale price, but the website price is $34.99, plus $13.31 for shipping (for 1 box). And the boxes I was referring to were from another company but I can't remember which. Also, the type of plastic is not stated in the ad, so it's just as likely to be as damaging as the Hefty Tubs. If there are any actual archival plastic experts on here, let's here from them. The only archival plastic that I know of, that is thick enough to make a box, at any reasonable cost, is acrylic. Which would weigh around 10 lbs if the BCW box was made of it! (and would be very brittle, easily broken). So the comparison comes down to plastic VS cardboard. The plastic is most likely less damaging. Also, air turnover is a bigger factor in storage, for out-gassing and acid factors, so as long as you never take your comics out of the container and look at them, they will last longer.

This is from the site...pretty much acid free plastic is all that's stated.

@GAC Exactly, that's the only claim of archival properties made, so nobody should just assume they are better than just a cardboard box. They could say they are radioactivity free for all the relevance that gives. Those boxes are super nice, especially if you were hauling them around for shows, just too expensive for my purposes. I will eventually buy the E Gerber archival boxes for slabs, (which are proven to be archival, for all you argumentative sorts out there) for the slabs I intend to hold on to for long term. But short term, these Hefty tubs, are a nice, cheap, convenient alternative.

yeah gonna centaur it next month. Going to Orlando to watch my cuz play softball. She’s at MIT and a senior. Don’t get to see my dads side of the family much at all. Her Dad my uncle passed unexpectedly this past year a few months after her wedding that thankfully I got to go too. So I’m trying to make more an effort to visit family more and not let huge distances be a factor. So I told the wife we are celebrating mine in March for warm weather, ball games and Disney

@Donnied for sure!! also, if the slabs are in mylar bags already I'm not sure the the tubs they sit in really matter...I might be wrong on that. if it's just an issue of breathability then you can poke a hole or two in the lid.

A step above cardboard and a step below the tub is corrugated plastic boxes.

I bought a few sets and they work well. I hated the cardboard boxes after I had one fall apart on me.

@GAC Actually, what you don't want is holes in the tub. Air turnover is bad, as the new oxygen and water introduced by "new" air act as catalysts in the breakdown process of the paper. Many years ago, a company offered a service of sealing comics in mylars with all the air removed and replaced with pure nitrogen. Supposedly halting the decomposition process completely (their claim). They went out of business pretty quickly, probably because it was hard to prove that they were actually doing anything other than heat sealing the mylar.

@cyrano0521 As a fairly well educated and experienced comic collector, I can safely say I could store that WW in this tub for 20 years and it would still remain a 4.0, so I can say I give the exact right amount of care to my slabs!

@Donnied I agree, and I suspect the BCW website price would be the highest of them all price-wise, however I would recommend people at least inquire with their local comic book or sports card shops to see if they can get them and if so at what price, because it should be cheaper than what BCW would charge. Local distributors of product such as GTS stock them and they may be able to get them, even at retail, for cheaper than what BCW charge.

@Steverogers11 awesome to hear you will be seeing family in the warmer climates of FL. I also had a beloved uncle pass away recently and I handn’t spoken to him in two years. When he passed suddenly it hit me hard. It’s good to go and spread the love with your fam, even if your not particularly close, or even really get along. All the best and enjoy the trip!

Filled up all four bins from BJ's Wholesale with hardcovers, and stacked them up.

Here are the pictures:

Not bad for $20 plus tax.

It’s crazy to me to hear about the thoughts of gases, new air, and stacking of slabs. I guess it’s just never occurred to me. Now that I think about it I’d be less likely to put these babies into containers than slabs, and really they are worthless. Not to me though.
