I'm not sure why I bid on this, I do like the artwork, but I probably should've picked up a decent copy for $5 instead.

Auction wins tonight. The Human Fly #1 with Spider-man cross-over (didn’t seem to help the series).

Some great covers in that batch. I think the Blackhawk is my favorite.

@EbayMafia i kind of like the old covers. no disrespect to current artists but at that time is was all about skills with no tools as aid

and usually actually trained artists - nothing against a certain cohort of artists but anatomically there is a generation of artists out there where those just aren't "people" they are drawing

It’s missing the action transfers (I’m not sure they came attached or tucked in), but this book is a ghost in high grade. Not often you come across one in any grade.

From across the pond. Packaging was not great, but it arrived ok. Im guessing an 8.0-8.5 if missing the transfers isn’t a hit. Very clean with only the faintest blemishes.

One more grail off my list.

@poka I put in two feeble bids in this Prime auction and both were beat by one dollar. Of the books I was watching, it sure seems like there were a lot of good prices to be had in this auction:
$275 Ended Apr 12 Flash (1959 1st Series DC) 117 VG 4.0 11 bids
$647 Ended Apr 13 Hawkman (1964 1st Series) 4 CGC 4.5 25 bids
$140 Ended Apr 13 Heavy Metal Magazine (1977) Vol. 1 #1 FN/VF 7.0 12 bids
$205 Ended Apr 13 Justice League of America (1960 1st Series) 21 CGC 5.0 19 bids
$233 Ended Apr 13 Marvel Team-Up (1972 1st Series) 65 CBCS 9.4 14 bids
$73 Ended Apr 13 Uncanny X-Men (1963 1st Series) 59 CBCS 5.5

Unfortunately I am pretty much out of the comic buying business for the next few months. Bleeding cash with a move...buying new appliances, furniture, etc. Otherwise I would have gone after most of these.

There will always be a next time. Just remember because you were beaten by $1 does not say much. Perhaps the other bidder’s high bid was much higher

So true. The last 10%-25% of a price typically comes down to just 2 bidders. The importance of the second place bidder to the final selling price tends to be under-recognized. I always thought it would be clever of Ebay to have some kind of Ebay Bucks consolation recognition for the second place bidder. The two I wanted were the Heavy Metal magazine and, to fill in my run, the X-men 59.

Anyone have guesses as to what happened here?

Same book, the MCS-graded 8.5 went for close to double the CGC graded 9.0. Even counting on MCS undergrading, that's a heck of a jump.

@xkonk - That 8.5 looked pretty good in the large-scale pictures. So at least a few people thought it would grade a couple of steps higher. The cream to off-white pages on the 9.0 also probably turned off a few potential buyers.

I have seen this happen quite often, where a lower graded raw sells for more than a slightly higher graded slab. What ever happened to a bird in the hand is worth more than two in the bush?

@xkonk - If one is a cgc fanboy, then it is obvious somebody reeeallly wanted the raw copy to read.
If one is a regular MCS customer, or a discerning bidder, you can see that the 8.5 raw copy has fewer flaws, better coloring, and likely much better page quality.

@esaravo - could it be that people are hip to overgrading by cgc and super tight grading by MCS?

Someone is banking that 8.5 (maybe with a press) will grade north of 9.2....also what @Scifinator and @esaravo said.
